Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee. Nightwish composes songs that are often classified as either symphonic metal or power metal, and sometimes as variants of the genre called opera metal and epic metal. Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the symphonic metal genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Epica, After Forever, and Visions of Atlantis.

Although the band has been prominent in their home country since the release of their first single, "The Carpenter", they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Oceanborn and Wishmaster, which were released in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Their 2004 album, Once, led to Nightwish video clips being shown on MTV in the United States and inclusion of their music in U.S. movie soundtracks. Their biggest U.S. hit single, "Wish I Had an Angel", made it onto two U.S. film soundtracks as a means to promote their North American tour. The band produced three more singles and two music videos for the album, as well as "Sleeping Sun", from the 2005 "best of" compilation album, Highest Hopes, prior to vocalist Tarja Turunen's departure.

The extensive search for Turunen's replacement, during the course of which anyone could have been considered by submitting a demo, ended in early 2007. Recently, the band declared that the new vocalist will be announced on May 30, 2007, together with the release of a new single called "Eva"

I love this band. Wanderlust is the 1st song that I heard from Nightwish and it is still my favourite till now.

My friend said that "The Phantom of the Opera" was singed (the music play is not really played by the band) at the final AF5 during the intro. I don't know if it is true. I never watched that show.

i haven't listen to the new singer as of yet but still i sure am gonna miss tarja...

well to be exact i first listen to them via the song the carpenter, a fren bought one of the beauty in darkness series dvd of which incidentally contain the video for the song and ever since i heard of it i've become more and more interested on their stuff :3

Dark Passion Play is the sixth studio album by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. It is scheduled for release on September 26, 2007 through Spinefarm and on September 28, 2007 through Nuclear Blast and Roadrunner Records. It is the band's sixth studio album and the first album to feature the band's new lead vocalist, Anette Olzon, and the first without former vocalist Tarja Turunen, due to her departure in October 2005. Dark Passion Play will be the band's first studio album in three years, the longest non-album gap in their history.

"Eva", the album's lead single, was released on May 25, 2007 as a download-only single. The income of the single will be donated to children's charity. On August 22, about a month before the album's release, a second single entitled "Amaranth" will be released. The third single of the album will be "Bye Bye Beautiful", but the date of its release is still unknown.

I got a new love in Nightwish

Before this I've often listened to their old songs from my friend, but didn't pay that much attention to this band (and other symphonic metal band like Within Temptation and Evanescence).
Until recently when I somehow got bored with Yousei Teikoku's latest single (which by no means less interesting than those in Gothic Lolita Propaganda), plus the fact that i often listened to Nightwish's song in some of my favorite MAD video, then I started to dig for their album. And there goes, got 2 of them (Wishmaster and Once) and they didn't disappoint me. Love Tarja's voice, coupled with the kind of music that fit my taste

Then I got their latest album Dark Passion Play with their new vocal. Not bad overall, although it sounds more like a pop band. Poet&Pendulum and Escapist are still awesome songs though

glad to hear that. btw since you did mention that you've grown to like symphonic metal stuff i suggest you try on any of the three luca turilli album link on the d/l section, for starter go try their kings of the nordic twilight one first

as for nightwish, since tarja's departure i had lost my interest in the band as i saw hers to be much more stronger compared to the new vocalist.

my personal fave should be the first album of them i get to bought - oceanborn. frankly speaking if it isn't for 'walking in the air' and 'sleeping sun' i may not be in love over them like i did now

Others that I tried recently includes Vanilla Ninja, but they don't have much songs that appeal me as much as Nightwish or Within Temptation.

Luca Turelli..I lurk their music on utube/esnips, their music remind me of Rhapsody

luca turilli [ the band took its name from his ] was his solo project encompassing 3 conceptual album.

haven't heard any of vanilla ninja yet but there's this scandinavian band of the same concept which piqued my interest. if i am not mistaken their name was shambless but little of their material can be found on the net.

i like within temptation as well but not as much as tristania, the latter which once one of the primary contributor for WT's songs.
