Title: There's a guy on ebay...
Description: selling stuff from sony

bisonrav - September 18, 2011 03:29 PM (GMT)
Interesting, but the item itself isn't particularly exciting (it looks like an advance listening copy of the Legacy Edition remaster on CD-R).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PREFAB-SPROUT-ST...=item519b02699d

Some guy has apparently been allowed to clear out a storeroom at the Sony archive and has a truckload of material.

Only one PS item so far, and looking at the rest for other groups (lot of Beyonce) it's not anything exciting, mostly copies of promos with the odd CD-R of preliminary mixes. I think we can be sure from John's experience that anything remotely interesting that turns up on ebay will be stamped on by Sony, but needless to say, I'm on it ;)

Allowed to clear out a storeroom my arse !

To be fair, the distribution centre would be release CDs rather than demo's and so on. It'd take a special kind of stupid to be selling the gear on Ebay too, but you never know.

Rivermoving - September 18, 2011 06:33 PM (GMT)
Seriously, how difficult is it to fake such a thing these days? I could pop in a DVDR in my computer, burn a one-track "rare demo" and sell it on eBay in no time. I think one has to be very careful before one commits to buy these things.

I`ll buy it Rm. !

There's enough in the "seller's other items" to make this guy's story plausible anyway, but this is not high grade stuff in the way the material JB was talking about a few weeks ago is. I asked him yesterday and he says it's the wrong part of the Sony store to hold original recordings.

I don't think SMq was remixed - just remastered - which means the chances are this is just a listening copy of that. I'll be bidding certainly on the CD-R and if I get it it'll be preserved for the empire and distributed in the usual way. Considering using dropbox now as an alternative to megaupload or torrents by the way.

What's more interesting looking across the other material this guy is offering is that there's a range of rough mixes and things like interviews on CD for other artists. So I guess we'll see what turns up. I'm after VHS cassettes of some of the promo videos for example, and I'd be quite happy with that.

You wouldn't want to buy my stuff! ;)

Mine for 2 quid, and I guess we'll see if anything else turns up in due course. There's a lot of editors material at present by the way.

If it turns out to be anything significant I will of course put it up somewhere.

Which VHS vids are you seeking?

bisonrav - September 25, 2011 04:01 PM (GMT)
Sony put the standard set of videos out on single title promo cassettes. I'm missing some of them. Obviously I have the videos in other forms.

selling a dish cloth!

a generic 'promo' sleeve?

or a 12" mix tape

every home needs one..

bisonrav - October 3, 2011 07:09 PM (GMT)
hands off the mix tape. I saw it first.... ;)

It's the standard 12" versions by the way, fairly sure about that. One of which is the 12" in generic promo sleeve too incidentally, that's the Aussie "release". You don't get anything different in terms of music.

The CD-R from the start of the thread is just the legacy version, nothing special on it

:P
that's a given B'rav..however I did pick up a white label copy of Jordan The Comeback for old times sake..although i missed the autographed FLPTM (grrr....)

bisonrav - October 4, 2011 06:43 AM (GMT)
I think the 12" mixes tape was pictured on Bedford's old site at one point. Anyway safely secured for the Empire overnight and one step nearer completism completion, which now mostly involves 2 Japanese Cassettes and 2 European 12" (Johnny Johnny and the Golden Calf).

Rivermoving - October 4, 2011 08:32 AM (GMT)
Brilliant. And you've received the odd Scandinavian CD?

Yep, got that safely thanks.

Rivermoving - October 4, 2011 11:19 AM (GMT)
Good to hear.

But oh, what about the Andromeda Heights mousepad? I've got one much treasured copy of that here at home. ;)

rock smith - October 7, 2011 12:58 PM (GMT)
on my recent ebay find, one slightly interesting point when listening to the white label of Jordan:The Comeback ,is that none of the songs blend into each other like the official release..

bisonrav - October 7, 2011 01:41 PM (GMT)
interesting - what's the matrix number?

I'm after VHS cassettes of some of the promo videos.

I've got the From Langley Park to Hollywood and Life of Surprises VHS collections. Is that what you're after? You can get both dirt cheap at Amazon. As you've created fab DVD collections I'm assuming this is a completist thing?

bisonrav - October 7, 2011 05:59 PM (GMT)
No, meant the one off promo videos which were produced at the time the singles were released.

I do indeed have Life of Surprises and Langley Park to Hollywood on PAL VHS, Secam, NTSC and laser disk. How did you know it was a completism project Jim? ;)

Jim_Williams - October 9, 2011 08:42 AM (GMT)
:D

bisonrav - October 9, 2011 06:47 PM (GMT)
Got round to checking the CD-R Steve McQueen this weekend, and as expected it's a sample by sample identical early listening copy of the release. Nothing new at all, unfortunately.

Rivermoving - October 10, 2011 08:41 AM (GMT)
It would have been soooo lovely if you had discovered "Snowy Rents A Dog" on it...

Speaking of which: didn't Paddy promise back in 2009 that this song would be released "somewhere"? I wonder somewhen...

bisonrav - October 12, 2011 08:26 PM (GMT)
You have to admire some people's front. 11 for an NME clipping?

I love the spiel about what he suggests people could do with the clipping if they buy it. They could also wipe their arse on it and mail it straight back to him!

rock smith - October 13, 2011 11:32 AM (GMT)
" Would make a great gift for the Prefab Sprout fan in your life , especially if you take the time to have this paper advert mounted and framed or matted and framed in a glass clip frame which are not expensive to buy."

loaffish - October 13, 2011 12:12 PM (GMT)
Would you frame it before or after you`d wiped your arse with it. ?

bisonrav - October 13, 2011 01:29 PM (GMT)
Funnily enough I came close to buying it by accident because I thought it was a live cassette - the title on the listing isn't clear, and the photo looks cassettish.

Fortunately brain was still working and I stopped to read the listing.

I wonder what the vinyl's worth?

bisonrav - October 16, 2011 02:44 PM (GMT)
The vinyl's not worth much to be honest, you can get a near mint Swoon for a tenner, and Candle Lions go for 25-50 quid - I bought one at the top end of that but only because it had a note written by Martin with address and phone number for the original owner, Muff Winwood, and therefore a bit of a Sprout milestone. I got another copy for 20ish I think when I was starting the collection. The only other thing I bought for that sort of price was the first Japanese issue of Steve McQueen, mint with an Obi strip, gorgeous thing.

That's half the enjoyment of collecting Prefab Sprout vinyl really, it's not expensive at all.

Probably more than I paid for it! Incredible value for money.

You know I've just realised that I can't actually remember where I got it. I can remember poring over the gatefold sleeve and being impressed by its glossy lushness, but not actually buying it. Shame, that.

B) might happen Rock, who you been talking to.?

Will in fact be onto this next week. Just sitting in Roy McCalvey's lounge at the minute, waiting to go and see Lanterns at the Sage and been discussing Paddy's tendency to turn up early at No 10 Audley Road in Gosforth a little bit earlier than the rest of Avalon and how they used Roy's fold up bed to deaden the drum sound to stop Sheila next door banging on the wall.

Top day actually..

rock smith - November 8, 2011 11:36 AM (GMT)
Megahertz..

sorta interesting..13 bids & up to 20 with 5 days still to run,a few years ago you could not give this CD away ( I was talking to my local record dealer and he was saying the same thing about the Dennis Wilson album)
When are Mojo and the rest going to realise that this is one of the greatest records of the last decade, and give it some belated exposure?

bisonrav - November 8, 2011 03:58 PM (GMT)
That's crazy, someone is obviously impatient for a copy. You can get it on musicstack for 11 though, get in.

I'd avoid this one though

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B...&condition=used

bisonrav - November 14, 2011 10:08 AM (GMT)
Arguably not the rarest PS vinyl item, but a must-have for the serious collector

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rarest-Prefab-Sp...=item2a15de5500

One of those items you might find cheaper, or you never might find again. Price is a little steep - I paid about that for the copy with note from Martin addressed to Muff Winwood, but also got a copy about a year ago for 25 quid or so.
