Title: 15/07/09 - Press Release
Jamie - July 15, 2009 10:13 PM (GMT)
Kitchenware have released what seems to be an official statement regarding the new album. As usual, it contains new information, so is headed straight for the Sproutnet homepage:
‘Let’s Change The World With Music’ was written and produced by Paddy McAloon at Andromeda Heights and mixed in Scotland by Calum Malcolm. The record kicks off with the hip-hop influenced hook-laden piano led ‘Let There Be Music’, which sets the tone for the rest of the record.
Paddy began work on ‘Let’s Change The World With Music’ in 1992, as the follow-up to ‘Jordan: The Comeback’. 17 years later, Paddy returns to these songs, some of his personal favourite compositions.
The 11 tracks are rejoiceful and uplifting, striking an endearingly familiar chord, all the while sounding fresh and timeless. Highlights are aplenty and include the celestial ‘Ride’, the jazzy sway of ‘I Love Music’ and the melancholic ‘Sweet Gospel Music’.Thanks to
Robert Wilson and
Lee Redfern for emailing it to me.

I don't know about you but this creates in me small bursts of anticipating excitement.
The fact that Paddy has his own recording studio and is his own boss is a feat he always wanted to achieve.

Again, strong indication that this will be something he truly is passionate about. Not that the other songs and albums were not. I just get this feeling that he has total control over exactly what he wants to release without putting up with other annoyances, other
suggestions. Regardless, it is time to sit and wait.
Thanks Kitchenware for the news release :)
and a crack up good job to you Jamie for the delivery.

So , the record was made in a kind of " Smileway" , is very exciting, Paddy is the architect of the constellations .

Very disappointed to learn that as of now, Sony are not planning to release LCTWWM in Germany. On a personal level, I will now have to import-order from the UK, which means I'll hardly be listening to LCTWWM on 7 September, more like 12 September.
More importantly: Too bad for the album, because this here is still a fairly big market with a considerable fan base; so far all PS/PM albums were released in Germany, even ITTM, and The Gunman made it into the Top 40.
rock smith - July 23, 2009 01:44 PM (GMT)
It reminds me of that bit in Spinal Tap when manager Ian Faith tells the band that the gig in Boston is cancelled, but not to worry as it's not a big collage town. Germany is amazing for record shops, second only to Japan for choice, and was it you Rae who pointed out PS were on a very popular soundtrack last year in Germany.wtf, Paddy, the fans and Music deserve better ..
James L - July 23, 2009 02:04 PM (GMT)
Paddy would be far better off working with a young and thriving independant label with distribution accross different markets and a clued up PR dept. Scritti Politti went back to Rough Trade for 'White Bread, Black Beer' and even though the album wasn't huge it garnered a Mercury nomination and great reviews. Green was everywhere in terms of interviews, TV spots etc (maybe not on all the mainsrtream channels but up and coming ones). But you get the feeling that Green is much better at playing the game than Paddy. and of course he toured extensively for the first time ever.

Something just occured to me, prompted by your post, James (with which I agree; Lloyd Cole is another example, if different from Scritti Politti; he seems to be getting little press, but must be doing okay being on a dedicated small German label):
Is it possible that Sony still somehow *own* LCTWWM, because the demo was recorded while PS were under contract with Sony, and aren't they still owing money to Sony?
I hope what nice things you say about German record shops is true, Rock; I only see them dying ... But at the same time, the big chains are putting in larger and larger vinyl sections, shopping in which is like stepping into a time machine.
turbocowboy - July 24, 2009 12:16 AM (GMT)
I tend to think that Sony *owns* the rights to LCTWWM, because it was demoed and recorded when PS was still under contract with them. At least they'd get the publishing rights, I think.

A bit off the topic but Paddy's in the new issue of MOJO (Arctic Monkeys Cover)has anyone read it yet? :)
Hans - July 24, 2009 02:45 PM (GMT)
Is it in the shops yet?
BTW - Kitchenware has updated their website with the press release as a news item.

I'm not sure Hans,i didn't see it today when i went in the papershop ,but i was just on the Mojo site and saw the contents of the new issue...i think it may be a small piece about the new album etc..
James L - July 24, 2009 03:02 PM (GMT)
They mention it on their website in the round up of small news items. Nice to see Mojo going out on a limb and promoting new music, this month's cover: Artic Monkeys, JJ Cale, The Housemartins, and Michael Jackson. How do they keep up with all these new acts?
Hans - July 24, 2009 03:13 PM (GMT)
AND David Sylvian.....but I like him.....
rock smith - July 24, 2009 03:16 PM (GMT)
tell me about it,i have vowed to never buy Mojo again after reading the last issue,it was 'orrible!

Don't you be thinking of saying anything bad about JJ Cale! Living Legend!
Kev Tinsley - July 24, 2009 06:50 PM (GMT)
Cruel, James, but mostly true, though they did have an article on TV On The Radio in the last one - which was, I agree Rock, one of their worst ever. The Island special was good, though, and I think the quality of the journalism is good even if you disagree with their choice of subject matter. Mat Snow is a great writer.
I wonder if it is Graham's interview?

Living? That's a first for mojo
loaffish - July 24, 2009 10:55 PM (GMT)
Housemartins and Paddy , looks like its Mojo for Jamie. :D
bynghs - July 25, 2009 06:23 AM (GMT)
The juicy highlights from the short Mojo piece:
- There's a full interview in next month's edition
- Paddy's still got the beard, but looks pretty dapper in shades, hat and blazer
- Paddy was hurt by the original rejection by Sony
- Paddy has written some sleevenotes for the release
- Keith Armstrong persuaded Paddy to listen to the DAT tape ("I got out the DAT and listened to it for the first time since'93 and thought, how could we have been so stupid as not to do this?"
- Paddy is still writing mountains of songs.
- Current projects in the works include "Zero Attention Span ("unflattering snapshots of today"), a set of "big city celebrations" including Neon Opera originally written for Jimmy Nail, and "Digital Diva" - a 30 song collection "written in response to the changes in the way Paddy conceives music since the onset of tinnitus"
Not sure why there is such vitriol amongst some of you against Mojo. It's the best of the big music monthly's by a long chalk at the moment.
Jim_Williams - July 25, 2009 08:04 AM (GMT)
Is it actually out yet?
As for "Zero Attention Span", the set of "big city celebrations" and "Digital Diva", no doubt we'll all be here in 5 years time wondering if we'll ever hear them.
Kev Tinsley - July 25, 2009 09:15 AM (GMT)
Thanks Bynghs for keeping us in the loop.
Jim_Williams - July 25, 2009 09:19 AM (GMT)
Yeh, thanks Bynghs - sorry, I was being rather ungracious previously. Got out of bed the wrong side, and fell out of the window.

Thanks for the juicy info!!
Paddy did mention "Neon Opera" in the interview on Swedish tv around the release of "Megahertz". And the "big city celebrations" could be the same album as mentioned in John Birch's book, "a concept album about cities" dated from the 1990s.
It all sounds... wonderfully intriguing!

That is brilliant, just what we need...three more legendary unreleased albums to replace the one we've now got! Let the decade of speculation commence.
I'm not sure whether to post this now, or wait for the full article...if anyone can send me a scan of it, would be much appreciated!
bynghs - July 25, 2009 01:40 PM (GMT)
I subscribe to Mojo so I got it yesterday - not sure if its hit the shelves yet. I do hope the sales for the album are going to be respectable enough to encourage Paddy to let more songs go
Jim_Williams - July 25, 2009 02:31 PM (GMT)
I've looked for it at 3 shops today. No joy. Monday, maybe.

Paddy's looking cool there...this is great...
imarcopolo - July 25, 2009 07:37 PM (GMT)
Intriguing piece, thanks for uploading it. Definitely want to read the full interview.
If Paddy put everything into it, and with Sony rejecting it, it makes you wonder whether that is the reason for such long periods between releases - he hates the idea of someone rejecting a piece of work he has put all of his emotional creativity into.
I love the line: "How could we have been so stupid not to do this?" You can imagine the frustration in his voice. Obviously, time and distance has given him some kind of clarity.
Although I really hope the expectation lives up to the final product.

I think Paddy's sarcophagus beats MJ's gold casket by a country mile! Here's to the true King of pop!
James L - July 26, 2009 11:39 AM (GMT)
Fantastic photo. Do you think Paddy keeps the unreleased albums in the sarcophagus?
Jim_Williams - July 26, 2009 11:50 AM (GMT)
Thanks, Rock. The sarcophagus is refreshingly bonkers. The mind boggles at what other treasures, besides his music, Paddy Macca has tucked away.
turbocowboy - July 26, 2009 01:25 PM (GMT)
Thx Rock, great read. God I so want to read the liner notes :D
Jamie - July 26, 2009 05:20 PM (GMT)
Well done, will get that up at some point! Though I'm not sure I like the line 'In September, one of those logs will float our way'...the scatological implications are terrifying.
