Title: 13/08/08 - 'Ask Wendy'/Covers List

Jamie - August 13, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
Big news today - I've just recieved word that Wendy Smith has agreed to answer some of your fan questions, in an 'Ask Wendy' sort of thing. If you'd like to ask something, you should email me with the subject line 'Ask Wendy,' and include your name, location, and question (of course!) Get thinking up some good ones!

Also, by popular demand, I've put up a page listing all the people who've covered the Sprouts' songs over the years. You can check it out here - and if you know of any others, let me know.

Jim_Williams - September 14, 2008 12:12 PM (GMT)
Any news, Jamie?

Jamie - September 15, 2008 09:08 AM (GMT)
I've not heard a peep from Wendy...but I have got some lovely questions! Expect an update soon.

Jim_Williams - September 15, 2008 09:32 AM (GMT)
Ta.

timonofathens - September 27, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
i think a pertinent question is....
will the Sprouts tour,
and will she join the ride?
did she participate in the new album?
will there be a lock of her hair in the Jordan box set that currently only exists in my mind,
though is inevitable due to the sheer genius of the whim.
make it so,
Jamie!

Jim_Williams - September 27, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
What was the question you sent on to Jamie, Timon (if you don't mind me asking)?

timonofathens - September 27, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
i don't mind you asking at all.
i think i had a few questions.
i certainly mulled over a few.
i think the last one was about whether she had to beat up Paddy and Martin much.
other than that,
i would like to know if there are songs that she wishes she had had the chance to sing more,
if there are particular favorites from the perspective of her performance.
nothing rude,
basically.
my memory isn't serving me too well today.
i'm busy processing this new album business.
life's too good.
why do you ask?
(if you don't mind my asking)

Jim_Williams - September 27, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
Just curious - I've not seen anyone's questions yet. Hmm, what with the recent '85 bootleg find, the forthcoming release and the prospective interview with Wendy, the next few months could be quite interesting on the Sprout front. All we need now is a compilation of rarities entitled Straight To Video - a phrase McAloon is keen to use, and which might make him feel more comfortable with the very idea of putting unadorned oldies out there.

timonofathens - September 27, 2008 07:45 PM (GMT)
what about a concert film from the NEXT tour.
i think it's time for a memento from the Sprout concert experience.

Any news from Wendy, Jamie?

I have made some progress...keeping schtum for the moment though.

timonofathens - November 4, 2008 10:17 PM (GMT)
Jamie,
were you,
in fact,
Wendy's first child?
i don't want to get too controversial here,
but it is worth asking at this juncture.
if no,
so be it.
if yes,
DUDE!
your mom's got it goin' on....

ok,
i NEVER use the word dude in a typical conversation.
i don't know what got into me.
let's just hug it out and forget it ever happened,
ok?
right.
over and out.

qmbcole - November 4, 2008 11:47 PM (GMT)
Timo, put the chocolate down and back slowly away from the keyboard, you've had one too many my man! ;)

Aviva - November 5, 2008 12:20 AM (GMT)
Can you ask Wendy if she ever tried it on with Paddy and if not why not.

He wouldn't last five seconds around me, even if he had that funny ZZ Top beard.

qmbcole - November 5, 2008 12:26 AM (GMT)
A, how do you think that question would go over with Wendy?????
Things probably didn't end all that well between everyone as it is (do these band things ever end well?), and you're looking to throw that gasoline on it!
Now you get your own question-
Have you been drinking? Stoned?

Drinking or stoned? No and no.

Just look at the Human League! One male lead singer and two female backing singers; he had an affair with both of them!

I'm not saying it's not possible, probably likely in fact, somewhere along the way. I'm just saying is that type of question going to help Wendy feel comfortable that she agreed to answer us at all? Decorum? Tact?

Oh yes, don't actually ask her...

Just insinuate.

timonofathens - November 5, 2008 02:07 AM (GMT)
right.
don't whip it out.
just make sure the bulge is visible.

An affair, you say? So that's one affair, with both of them?

Rita Sue and Bob Too, or what?

Oh, I get it. You mean he had two affairs, one with each.

As you were.

James L - November 5, 2008 02:00 PM (GMT)
You'd hope she tried it on at some point, they were in a relationship right the way up to the mid-90s weren't they?

Were they?

That's interesting. Obviously it would mean that some of his songs are about her, then. I didn't know that.

As she was his girlfriend for some time it seems fairly likely.

They could have been just good friends. To me, that kiss says, "Paddy McAloon, you're a great mate."

He probably is a great mate.

Jim_Williams - November 5, 2008 02:27 PM (GMT)
Er, you thought I deduced from the photo that they were lovers 'for some time'? It's common knowledge. The picture was just garnish. Despite the rumours, I'm not an idiot/astrologer.

qmbcole - November 5, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
Someone please spell this out for A. I guess she needs graphic proof, sadly the tabloids don't send much paparazzi Wendy or Paddy's way.

edit- I see Jim just did, twice no less, thanks mate!

As I, nor qmbcole didn't know, (see previous page of this thread) it can't be that commonly known common knowledge.

Despite the rumours, I'm not psychic.

Du-oh!

I've just had a look at some tea leaves and they're telling me that Paddy and Wendy were the sort of mates who often wind up in bed together, ya' know the type.

Interesting though, Aviva, I'm not sure how I know that they were an item, I just know, ya' know, a bit like when I meet a guy with a Slayer T-shirt on.. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xXFuv7B-4lY

Ah, you just know....

Now, I have quite a dirty mind in some respects but I honestly swear it never crossed my mind about them until I just asked. I don't know why that should be; maybe because some of my best friends are men and a romance with them would feel like incest.

Anyway, I love that Slayer fan clip, JJ. Very amusing. In response I give you the Slayer Fan cat:

Here's an article on the BBC website that "proves" they were an item:

Paddy & Wendy = Beast with Two Backs

Despite the rumours, I'm not psychic.

'Common knowledge' is a figure of speech, reflecting the fact that something is widely acknowledged, either across society or, in this case, within a given milieu.

In the case of the former, it's common knowledge, for example, that the Second World War took place between 1939 and 1945. Astonishingly, I met some people in their early 30s recently who didn't know that. But the facts are still common knowledge.

The concept of psychic powers refers to the ability to perceive things, through extra-sensory perception, hidden from the senses. Aside from the small matter that these powers don't exist, I, fortunately, didn't need them to become aware of Paddy and Wendy's liaison. :P

So if I have a question to ask about Prefab Sprout, I should think twice just in case it might be "common knowledge"?

Thanks for that, Jim. Very friendly.

Jesse James - November 5, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
As an alternative to this friendly debate I suggest that we all argue over something completely pointless.

No, that would be silly. I enjoy finding out things about Prefab Sprout I didn't already know. That's largely why I came here in the first place. I wasn't being unfriendly; I was just being satirical. I do think the 'psychic' thing was funny. So shoot me!
