What vocal part did Rusty Goodman sing with the Plainsmen Quartet?

I think he was hired to be the bass singer however as it turned out his vocal range was such that he did a tremendous job of singing the "lead" part on many songs. Some folks would probably consider him a a good "baritone" rather than a "bass".
Well I guess that covers it all except "tenor".

I think he was initially hired for the baritone part, then he attempted to cover the bass part after ? was it Joe B. Davis? left the group?
My favorite story about Rusty is him traveling with his bare feet out the window trying to keep a constant cold so he could sing the part.
I think Rusty was a very talented musician/entertainer/singer, just not a natural bass singer.

I think he was originally hired for baritone.
The Goodmans were not one of my all time favorite groups but Rusty is one of my favorite singers. His work with the Plainsmen was good and his work with his family was good also and in my opinion he did some very creative and great solo work.

Rusty Goodman joined the Plainsmen as baritone singer, and I heard Rusty here in my hometown after Joe B. Davs left and Rusty sang a very good bass part.

Rusty was first hired as baritone singer.
I'll have a followup question about that tomorrow (if I don't forget!)

Thanks John for a great Goodman question. Rusty is the reason that I love the Goodmans so much.

I can't confirm this, but on Johnny Hortons recording of North to Alaska, the Plainsmen sang the backup and for years I thought that was Rusty Goodman singing the bass part, but Easmon Napier always said they had to bring in another bass singer other than Rusty to do that part on the recording.

Sounds like Rusty to me on "way up NORTH".

I agree with you John, in fact that is one song the Plainsmen did here in their concert when I saw them and Rusty sang bass on that.

Sounds like Rusty to me too.
Don't have the album anymore but used to have best of Johnny Horton and the Painsmen did a great job of backing him up on several songs as I remember.

Better watch out, Rich. Mark and Ben won't like you referring to them as the "Painsmen"!
