Well fair enough, although have you even tried game maker? It's free (well simple version) from www.gamemaker.nl

My brother uses it...I don't really see it as such a potential maker for RPGs.

Well yes, creating a RPG in it would be horribly complicated in basic mode (little better than powerpoint) but for other things it's very easy to do.

I've used Visual Basic before, didn't understand any of it, but I've played some cool sports simulators made with it.

C++ is good for *general* programming (we'll not go into details as to not drop myself into any shit). But i've never tried using it for games.
Isnt HL C++?

i use Quick Basic, Dark Basic, Basic, Delphi, (use notepad ;) ) and of course Game Maker.
