Albinism is a rare genetic condition in which the body's ability to produce pigments is greatly inhibited. This condition has been known in humans for many years but it has only just recently found to occur in Pokemon as well. A graduate student doing field research under Professor Hawthorn of Lead town found the specimen north of the aforementioned city.

"At first I thought it was what many trainers have nicknamed a 'shiny' pokemon," he says "However, most 'shinies' are characterized by brighter colors than usual, this pokemon was much paler than usual." The pokemon in question was a hatchling Ekans. The darker purple parts of the body were pale yellow, and the parts that were normally yellow were white because of the complete absence of pigmentation. Its eyes were red.

When asked about the significance of his students discovery, Dr. Hawthorn sad: "While it is very interesting that Pokemon are also capable of being albinistic, I'm afraid this specimen has contributed all it can to science; it's albinism is identical to that ofound in humans. As such we at the lab have decided to sell the pokemon and use the profits to fund further research."

This Ekans, a level 5 male, is commanding a price of $40,000 and any wealthy trainers can enquire about the specimen at the Hawthorn Pokemon Laboratory in Lead Town.

Question: If one would breed said Ekans with a regular Pokemon, would the resulting Pokemon be albino?

Nope, Albinism is a recessive trait. After some in-breeding you could start getting albinos, though. Hang on, I'll make some punnet squares.

If you mate Albino Ekans with a normal Ekans, you get normal Ekanses.

Mate two of the siblings and 25% will be Albino

Mate the new albino with one of its siblings and 50% will be albino

Mate the new albino with one of its siblings 75% will be albino

And presumably when they start crapping 75% of their babies as albinos you can just breed albino with albino and then you'll have a true breeding strain of albinos.

We just studied Punnett Squares in Science.

John, does the same hold true for Darks and Shinies?

QUOTE
Hmm, Punnett Squares was interesting, although Shinies would be reccessive, genetically according to the games the odds do not improve. I wouldn't say they would even through dominant/recessive traits - they wouldn't apply with "shinies".

In the metal generation games the odds improved quite a bit. Normally it was like one in ten thousand but with breeding it was like 1 in 64. Personally I think if someone's going to invest the effort into breeding shiny pokemon they deserve a little bit of a reward for it.
