Lórien
Lórien, the land named for Irmo, the Vala of dreams in Valinor, is ruled by Lord Celeborn, the wisest of the Elves left in Middle-earth, and is rumored to be wiser than Elrond Peredhel himself. The lands of Lórien include the rivers Silverlode and Nimrodel, and all the lands down to the fields of Celebrant and the plains from the river Limlit and north to the forest of Lothlórien, where the remaining Eldar of Lórien reside with their Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel.

Caras Galadhon
The capital city of Lórien, and the home of Celeborn and Galadriel. It is situated in the northern part of the forest, between the rivers Celebrant and Anduin. This is the only fortress of the Galadhrim, and is protected by a moat and tall, strong walls. Though extremely few know about it, the Eldarin fortress is protected by Galadriel's power combined with that of the ring Nenya.

Vales of Anduin
The Vales of Anduin were to the far north. It encompassed Éotheod and the lands around the Carrock in the Third Age. The only places of real significance are the House of Beorn and the lands of the Beornings, and the ruins of Framburg, the old capital of Éotheod, yet another region named for its people. The Vales of Anduin were inhabited by the Stoors until the early mid-Third Age when they moved over the Great mountains and into Eriador.

Erebor
After the fall of Moria to the Balrog, the dwarves of Durin's folk removed to the Grey Mountains, and from there to Erebor when they were chased away by the cold-drakes of the Mountains. Again, in the latter half of the Third Age, the last great dragon, Smaug, vanquished the Dwarves of Erebor and Men of Dale. After Smaug was defeated the Dwarves came back and flourished again under Dáin Ironfoot as the new King under the Mountain.

Lake Town
This city of Men is placed upon the Long Lake. It was founded after the sacking of Erebor and Dale, to create a safer haven. Known in the Third Age for their rich, fine wine, they had good relations with the Elves of Thranduil in Mirkwood to the west of the township. The old city was placed on the northern banks of the Long Lake, and was named Esgaroth, but many later called Lake Town Esgaroth instead.

Dale
The City-kingdom of Dale is an ancient citadel of the North. Through long years the Men of Dale, who are among the descendants of the Edain, kept good friendship with the men of Esgaroth, dwarves of Erebor and the elves of Mirkwood under Thranduil. It has always been very wealthy and magnificent, and by the time of the War of the Ring the kingdom spread east to the River Carnen and south to the River Running, the Celduin.

Halls of Thranduil
After Oropher's death during the Last Alliance Thranduil moved his people from the Emyn Duir, the Mountains of Mirkwood, and northwards to a place not far from th Eaves of Mirkwood where he dug caverns and vast halls known as the Halls of Thranduil. He had storage rooms, a hall of many pillars, sleeping quarters, dungeons and a great Throne hall.

North Mirkwood
When King Oropher of Mirkwood died in the War of the Last Alliance, his son, Thranduil, moved the Silvan people of Mirkwood northwards from the hills of western Emyn Duir. Though their capital was Thranduil's Halls in the East of the woods, most of the people of Mirkwood lived in huts and houses on the forest floor or in the tree tops. Favouring beech trees, the Elves of Thranduil mostly live by the eaves and edge of their Woodland Realm, from which they ride and dance in moonlight and starlight. They love hunting, and feasts, and live happily with little need of trading, mining or farming.

Harrowdale
The deep north-south valley cut out of the White Mountains by the Snowbourn River. At its southern end, beneath the mountain known as the Starkhorn, stood Dunharrow, a great refuge of the Rohirrim. At its northern end, where the Snowbourn issued onto the plains of Rohan, stood the nation's capital, Edoras.

Westfold
A land of Rohan lying border-to-border with the Gap of Rohan. Before the First Battle at the Fords of Isen the region was under the rule of Prince Théodred, the son of King Théoden and heir of Rohan's throne. Inside the borders of Westfold the ancient fortress of Hornburg laid, famous for King Helm Hammerhand who alone went out at nights and killed the Dunlendings sieging him with his bare hands. Freezing to death, the legend of Helm Hammerhand was sealed, and the Hornburg got a new name; Helm's Deep.

Nan Curunír
Nan Curunír, the great valley of the fortress of Isengard. In ancient times, thousands of years ago, the Dúnedain created the fortress Orthanc and the ring around it. Not even the fury of the Onodrim, the Ents, could harm its unbreakable, swart rock. The rule of Isengard was given to Saruman late in the Third Age by the current Steward of Gondor, and he was long a friend of both the Ents and the Rohirrim, though he desired the One Ring, and fortified Isengard and destroyed its lush gardens. After the War of the Ring the tree-herders renewed its gardens and planted new trees, and by their care and time it was beautiful again.

Eastfold
Between the River Snowbourn and Anórien in Gondor lies the Eastfold, and the East-Mark which is one of the three military divisions of the Riddermark. In time of war, the Men of the East-Mark were set under the control of one of the Marshals of the Mark. During the War of the Ring the responsibility fell upon Éomer, son of Éomund, who had his seat in Aldburg, the ancient and original capital of Rohan. Eorl the Young had his seat there. It was a seat of noblemen, like Éomer and his father Éomund.

Wold
The Wold was the northernmost region of Rohan. A massive plain, it has few permanent settlements and most of the folk living there live a nomadic life, making temporary camps and traveling the Wold with their animals. The eastern border was the River Anduin, and its western marches was Fangorn, the Entwood. In the north there was the River Limlight, but there were no fixed border in the south. Wold was invaded by Easterlings in Eorl's time, and both he and Félarof met their doom there. They were, however, buried outside of Edoras.

Fangorn
Fangorn Forest, or Entwood as it is called in Rohirric, was a place of much mystery and fear. If there were one forest more feared by the Rohirrim than the Dwimordéne(Lothlórien) it was the Entwood. Fangorn was one of the last remnants of the vast, ancient forests that grew all over Eriador. The only others remaining are Eryn Vorn in Minhiriath and the Old Forest near Buckland. Fangorn Forest was named for Fangorn the Ent, oldest and wisest of his kind an the lord of all the Tree-herders. The forest was a dangerous place to wander without the protection of one of the Onodrim, for the Huorns, malicious and hateful Ents grown idle and wrathful, govern the wood.

Minas Tirith
The fortress of Minas Anor, the Tower of the Setting Sun, was built by Isildur son of Elendil the Tall of Andúnië early in Gondor's history. Built by immeasurably strong masonry upon seven tiers with seven gates at the base of the Mindolluin, easternmost peak of the White Mountains, the Ered Nimrais. When the Nazgûl took Minas Ithil, the city was dubbed Minas Tirith, the Tower of Guard, and would forever protect the western lands against the Darkness in the East.

Osgiliath
In the year of 3320 Isildur and Anárion Kings of Gondor under High King Elendil founded the capital of Gondor. The Fortress of the Host of Stars was one of the greatest cities in all of Middle-earth, surpassed only by Elendil's Annûminas. The greatest wonder of all was the Bridge of Osgiliath. On it was stables, homes, great halls, inns and the Dome of Stars, where the Palantír was and the Throne of Gondor. The Bridge was the second wonder of the Third Age, upon where almost the whole city laid. It was destroyed in TA 2475, and during the WR it was nothing but ruins.

Cair Andros
This island in the middle of the Anduin is one of the most important strategic points in Gondor. Except for the Bridge of Osgiliath, Cair Andros is the only place where a large host can cross the Anduin. The great grandfather of Denethor, Túrin II, fortified the island in the year 2900 TA, and it was held by Gondor until the War of the Ring, when an army of more than 6,000 Orcs and men took the island and blocked the way for the Rohirrim reinforcements.

Ithilien
When Isildur and Anárion ruled Gondor together in its earliest years, they split the realm in twine. Anárion was given Anórien and Minas Anor to govern; and Isildur was given Minas Ithil and Ithilien. Ithilien was the fairest, most beautiful region in Gondor, and many people lived there. When Sauron's black Uruks attacked Ithilien, its people removed to Minas Tirith. Ithilien then became the home of the Rangers of Ithilien, under Faramir son of Denethor the Steward of Gondor. From Henneth Annûn they waylaid and ambushed Sauron's forces as they moved through the lush lands.

The Mountain Range
The Hithaeglir were raised by Morgoth to hinder the ride of Oromë through Middle-earth. In the Third Age, however, it was the one of the most important obstacles for a traveler to overcome when crossing the lands. There are passes through the mountains, some safe, most not. The goblins there are vicious, cunning creatures, who wouldn't mind a piece of a foolish adventurer now and then.

Khazad-dûm
Ancient Dwarrowdelf was in days of yore the greatest citadel of the dwarves ever devised. It's craftmanship was unmatched and unchallenged in all of the Seven Fathers' other halls. And Khazad-dûm was the only place where Mithril could be found, and by the true-silver they grew richer and greedier, and richer still. But they dug deep, then, far too deep into the roots of the mountains, and they awoke their bane. Two of Durin the Deathless' heirs fell before him, before they fled their halls. From that day and forward, the name Moria, "dark realm", given to Dwarrowdelf by the Elves, lingered as a threat and fear in the minds of every scholar, every traveler and every Dwarf old enough to understand their weeping fathers singing in lamentation. During the War of the Ring it was infested with 1-2000 goblins, trolls and a multitude of dark, unnamed creatures that not even the new Lord of Moria, Durin's terrible bane, can tell of from experience.

This grim mountain range in the north is once held the majority of the Dwarves of Durin's Folk. They amassed a fortune of fortunes there, They were besieged by Cold-drakes from the uttermost north, remnants of Morgoth's reign, and sacked and hoarded the wealthy Dwarven riches from their halls, and forced them south. Today the Grey Mountains are haunted by orcs, dragons and other vile creatures of darkness, and only fools tread there.

These desert-like wastelands are situated in between the Mountains of Ash, Ered Lithui, and the Mountains of Shadow, Ephel Dúath. Riddled with treacherous chasms and crevasses filled with smoke and fire and ash, this might just as well be the most dangerous place in all of Middle-earth.

A great gate built by Sauron in the Second Age to protect himself from outside assailants. Apart from the Valley of Imlad Morgul this was the only entrance into Mordor from the South, North and West. On the two sides of the gates were Carchost and Narchost, the Towers of the Teeth, and spanned in between them was the Black Gate of Cirith Gorgor.

Near & Far Harad
The distant lands far to the south of Gondor. The names simply mean the Far South (as opposed to Near Harad, the more familiar southern lands), a region almost unknown to the peoples of the northwestern parts of Middle-earth. Near Harad's inhabitants, great enemies of the Gondorians, were likely the ones being referred to in Tolkien's references to the Haradrim, and not those of Far Harad.

A natural harbourage far to the south of the Bay of Belfalas. It was used by the Númenóreans during the Second Age, and it was here that Sauron surrendered himself to Ar-Pharazôn.
