Stats! *Runs away screaming*

It can't be overstated enough that the RPG stats are OPTIONAL. Yes, the game does use an RPG system; yes, combat is resolved like it would be in a good old pen & paper RPG. All of the numbers and die-rolling, however, take place in the background. Players only have to bother with them as much as they choose to. People regularly enjoy things without concerning themselves with all the fine mechanics involved: drive a car without knowing how a fuel-injection engine works, take a cruise without understanding the concept of ballast, go skydiving without knowing that gravity's rate of acceleration is 9.98 m/s2, and so on. The stats aren't something the GMs have sadistically inflicted upon the players. Quite the opposite: they are the ones who wade through a pile of numbers, tables and rolls in order to make combat more dynamic and exciting.

I don't know anything about Macross. Can I still play here?

Absolutely! When I first started roleplaying Macross, I knew next to nothing about the setting. It's not a difficult one to grasp, however. In fact, most of the players on this board started with limited or no experience whatsoever with Macross. If you're interested but unfamiliar, take a look around; there's plenty of information posted to help you get up to speed. Some recommended places to start:
  • "Introduction" under Game Info on the sidebar.
  • "Character Race" in the Character Creation forum.
  • Everything in the Sourcebook forum.
  • "Watch Macross Online" in the General Discussion forum.

What kind of mecha does my character get to pilot? Can I customize it?

Your GM will determine what kind of mecha your character pilots in most cases. Also in most cases, you are not allowed by the military to customize your machine, since they are multi-million dollar military assets payed for by UN citizens' hard-earned taxes. Of course, if you don't get caught...

I don't want to be a variable fighter/mecha pilot. Is there still a place for me in the game?

There's no question that the game is geared toward VF pilots, but that doesn't mean they are the only character type allowed, or that they necessarily get preferential treatment. Every VF squadron belongs to an airbase or starship, which means there are plenty of mechanics, ship crew, base personnel, intelligence officers, even civilians to be played. If you want to play a particular type of character but don't know where to fit him/her in, contact a GM. They will be more than happy to take a look around and see where your character is needed.

Can I create my own worlds/organizations/aliens/mecha?

There are no restrictions on players creating their own custom content, including colony worlds, organizations, celebrity NPCs, movies, sports, animals, etc. However, players usually do not create alien races or mecha. These require special attention due to their potential to break game balance, and are generally left to the GMs. With that in mind, it doesn't hurt to propose new alien species or variable fighters. If the GMs like the idea, they may collaborate with you on the project.

I'm still struggling with combat. Where can I get help?

Do not hesitate to ask a GM for help! They are more than willing to go the extra mile to help you understand areas of the game you're struggling with. Another good place to look are mission threads - look at how other players handle combat, and see if there's anything you can pick up on.
