Character Spotlight: Chorizal

user posted image

Rank: 2nd Lieutenant
Callsign: Marauder
Unit: Striker Squadron, UNS Shogun

Threads to check out: Bar Stools and Pool Cues, Stretching Their Wings.

Chorizal is a remarkable character not in spite of his flaws, but because of them. A rare commodity in roleplaying games, Striker Squadron's resident Zentran warrior gets carried away in combat, places his squadmates at risk, refuses to be a team player, and loses his temper at the slightest verbal provocation. Chorizal's player, indeed anyone with half a brain between their ears, knows that if he would behave differently, things would go a lot smoother for him and Striker Squadron - or at the very least, Chorizal might be more likable. However, Chorizal doesn't act differently. Chorizal acts like Chorizal, for better or worse (usually worse). In this way, the player has created something truly unique and entertaining to read.

Character Spotlight: Enyo

Rank: 2nd Lieutenant
Unit: Striker Squadron, UNS Shogun

Threads to Check Out: A Demonstration, Smoking Kills

Enyo acts exactly like what she is; someone caught entirely out of her element who, whether or not she actually realises this fact, is doing very little to change it. Oh, she thinks she's working on it, but it seems like for every two steps forward, she takes one back. Her player has created an incredibly consistent character who, although she interacts with only two or three people aboard the ship, manages to draw the rest of us into her antics.

Threads to check out: Bar Stools and Pool Cues (the end, belatedly posted); The Side No One Else Sees.

This time around is as much a spotlight for the players as for the characters. SOS' setting is unfamiliar to most of the people who play here, but some took to it like fish to water. Striker and Wuf, on the other hand, worked extremely hard to familiarize themselves with the Macross universe and become comfortable in it. These posts (originally chat logs) are evidence of that. They don't contain much that's unique to the setting, and in fact the conversations probably could have taken place in most other genres. However, the point is that these characters gave each player a lot of problems, as Wuf and Striker both felt awkward about the roles they play in the Shogun campaign for a long time. These conversations show a vastly improved degree of comfort and confidence, and therefore, quality of play.

Character Spotlight: Jayne Cobb

Rank: Understand the chain of command?
Callsign: N/A
Unit: Serenity

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'.
He saw the mudders' lament.
And he saw the Magistrate takin'
every dollar and leavin' five cents.
So he said: "You can't do that to my people."
said "You can't crush them under your heel."
So Jayne strapped on his hat
and in 5 seconds flat
stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal.

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Now here is what separates heroes
from common folk like you and I.
The man they call Jayne
he turned 'round his plane
and let that money hit sky.

He dropped it onto our houses
he dropped it into our yards.
The man they called Jayne
he stole away our pain
and headed out for the stars!

He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne...
