It's a story from the first age it goes from the Silmarill period with the kinslayings and all the way until they leave for the undying lands.

And the twins there are just elflings Then when his life seems perfect the kinslaying business happens and he's taken for being one when he only tried to help one guard elf who got stabbed. Galadriel sentences him to life imprisonment and then he meets the three lorien brothers in his inprisonment in Lorien. Years later he's made to bond with Elrond only half way so Elrond he can stand the loss of Gil Galad after the first war with Sauron. Making his life a half life since he gives half his lifeforce to Elrond."
There is so much more that I would just be spoiling it all if I went further.
