Description: PJ and NL Cinema announcement

LadyofLegolas - December 27, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)
Well I've been a bit busy during X-mas time so I'm not sure actually if it's been posted or not, (if it's been posted sorry for the repeat) but it's official now, ladies and gent!
PJ will make the Hobbit! here's the link:

http://www.thehobbitblog.com/

Now that's what I call a mighty X-mas gift!
*crying and dancing with happy tears on her face

The good news has been announced here in another thread called "jackson not going to direct hobbit." But that's all right; maybe we can put all the new Hobbit information in this thread from now on, because the other thread started out completely differently and now that we know that there is going to be a Hobbit movie, perhaps a new thread is just what we need.

Oh yeah and it's good to see you around, LadyofLegolas! :)

I'm excited about the movie, even though it's a long ways off!

Opal - December 27, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
Ohhh yeah, baby!

mistofstars - December 28, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
that is so so so so soooo cool! :biglove:

rine turelie - December 28, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
This blog is funny. It's off of onering and discusses their "choices" for the Hobbit cast. The one that had me rolling on the floor was the suggest for Thranduil...David Bowie. But another good thing about the article is it gives good character information for the major characters of the Hobbit.

Vilwarin - December 28, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
Jeremy Irons as Smaug... I SO love Jeremy Irons!

Aeneus - December 28, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
David Bowie!

Maybe in his younger years....

Re: David Bowie

That made me howl when I saw it too. I suppose they are both English. And male. Otherwise, all they seem to have in common is loads of sex appeal. (Maybe they're thinking of his role in Labyrinth? That being a good Goblin king would make him a good Elf king. :-p)

Starr_Dust - December 30, 2007 05:37 AM (GMT)
Well according to NotStarring.com, David Bowie wanted to play Elrond in LotR, so maybe that's where this article got the idea for him to be Thranduil?

AmourDuTigre - December 30, 2007 05:41 AM (GMT)
Now what would be really cool is if David Bowie played Elrond and Iggy Pop played Legolas...

I would have not been able to watch those movies without snickering...it was strongly rumoured that they had a "special relationship" back in the day, but Bowie claims that he is straight as an arrow...

Didnt Bowie sleep with Mick Jagger? Er... off topic.

Bowie does look elvish. Just look at Labyrinth as another has mentioned. But he is old.

I must say I cannot wait to get some real info on the cast.

AmourDuTigre - December 30, 2007 01:35 PM (GMT)
Yeah, all of those icons from my youth that I see in my mind's eye as being young and in their prime when I see their pics today, I am shocked at how old they are...Iggy pop is in his sixties, if I am not mistaken... (Iggy wrote a tender little love ballad titled I Wanna be your Dog!... )

I felt nostalgic today and I was browsing around on the net and somehow I've stumbled upon the Wikipedia page about the LotR Trilogy and look what I've found on the bottom of the page:

QUOTE
Sam Raimi had expressed interest in directing The Hobbit under Jackson, while Guillermo del Toro also said "it would be a privilege" to direct, having met Jackson. MGM CEO Harry Sloan said, "Neither us nor New Line would want to hire a director that Peter was not completely comfortable with." He also mentioned Jackson and Fran Walsh would co-operate on the scripts, and that Jackson may direct the second prequel as he would have completed Tintin. The actors Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen and Cate Blanchett had said they would reprise their roles as Legolas, Aragorn and Galadriel respectively with Jackson, while Ian McKellen said he would like to play Gandalf: Jackson had told him, "You must play Gandalf whether I direct or not." Composer Howard Shore had also said he has thought of some themes for the film.

So, I'm extremly happy that Orly and Viggo will have some quality time (hopefuly months or even a year) together again and they don't even need an excuse for it this time around! :P

Boy, it's gonna be a veeeeery long two years for me! :wall:

For me too. I want it now!

Starr_Dust - January 6, 2008 10:19 PM (GMT)
Thanks for sharing that LadyofLegolas. That's great news. I'm glad to know that Jackson might at least direct the LotR Prequel and that he and Fran will work on the scripts.

rine turelie - February 11, 2008 10:56 PM (GMT)
Uh oh guys...there might be a problem!

Tolkien Estate sues New Line

The Tolkien Estate is also seeking the power to be able to terminate New Line's rights to making "The Hobbit."

I wish New Line would just pay the Estate their money so we can have our hobbit movie! :wall:

Starr_Dust - February 11, 2008 11:00 PM (GMT)
Dammit New Line! Stop being such tightwods! Why can't they just give everyone their fair due!?

EDIT: More New Line news from IMDB

End of the Line for New Line?

Time Warner executives are considering folding New Line into its Warner Bros. division or keeping the brand as a separate production unit with Warner Bros. handling its distribution, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Monday), citing people familiar with the situation. The newspaper said that in either scenario, New Line would be reduced to producing low-budget films as it once did instead of blockbusters like its recent Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Journal did not indicate what would become of The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings prequel, which New Line is scheduled to produce this year.

Ah, that makes me happy to know that he'll be Gandalf...I couldn't imagine any other person besides Sir Ian.

But the movie is so far away...*sadness* Two years? I hope we'll all still be around in two years to obsess over the new films.

Tigerlily Grubb - March 27, 2008 05:07 AM (GMT)
Lol, I expect we may even have some former regulars returning when the movie releases... it won't be like the LotR craze, which built up over three years, but it'll be pretty crazy!

I know what you mean. I just wish the movie would hurry up and get to us. But knowing that Sir Ian will be Gandalf really makes my day :D

mistofstars - March 27, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
my mother and I are always thinking about who will play Bilbo o.ö
I'm too impatient

Just a tidbit on Howard Shore.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36215

I am so happy with this. I loved Howard Shores score in the LotR's trilogy.

Starr_Dust - March 31, 2008 10:52 PM (GMT)
Yay! More good news!

aylith - April 17, 2008 11:48 PM (GMT)
I've been looking on one of those sites which discusses who would be right to play Bilbo and co in The Hobbit, and someone suggested Sylvester McCoy user posted image who played the 7th Doctor Who.
He's twelve years younger than Ian Holm, so he'd be a bit more suitable for the physical demands of the part. I think he really looks the part too.

Martin Feeman from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy also seems to be a popular choice.

mistofstars - April 18, 2008 12:57 AM (GMT)
ahahaha I would have to laugh all the time if they took feeman xD
he's just looking so funny xDD

alyith, the first pic is not working

aylith - April 18, 2008 11:30 AM (GMT)
Thanks, mos.
I just uploaded it to ImageShack, as the upload feature in my Photobucket account isn't working. This seems to happen every time they do something new to their site!

Starr_Dust - April 18, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
I would like to have Ian Holm come back to play Bilbo, but I guess he's too old so that would be out of the question. Although that McCoy guy does look a lot like him, so I think it would be a good fit. Martin Freeman is too young to play Bilbo. Isn't Bilbo supposed to be around 60 when The Hobbit takes place?

mistofstars - April 18, 2008 04:04 PM (GMT)
@starr
as far as I remember the book he was about 50...

@alyith
wow o.ö sylvester could really be a younger bilbo...
he looks a bit like Ian Holm O.ö

Del Toro will officially be directing 'The Hobbit'.

I know Peter Jackson's appearance had changed since LotR, but I'd forgot just how much! I watched The RotK appendices a couple of weeks ago and still have that old image of him clearly in my mind.

Great news it all seems to be going ahead finally. I've not seen Hellboy II, but I thought Pan's Labyrinth was superb, and combined with how PJ seems to feel about del Torro he seems like an ideal candidate for the huge task.

rine turelie - May 1, 2008 12:04 AM (GMT)
I think Del Toro will be a good director. I'm hoping for great movies from him or else I will not be happy! *can't wait for new movies!*

LadyofLegolas - May 6, 2008 09:46 PM (GMT)
Del Toro is an excellent choice. I saw all of his work and there's is a saying about him that he is like a kid with unlimited amount of unique imagination who forgot to grow up.
Just like PJ :D
I have high hopes for the movies now and for the first time I truly think that the magic will be repeated once more (maybe not the full scale one like the trilogy has, but still powerful enough to enchant the fans).
Valar help us if I'm wrong.

I found this article on IMDB.com this morning:

McAvoy Tipped For Hobbit Role
29 May 2008 12:09 AM, PDT

Scottish actor James McAvoy has been tipped to take the lead role in the new movie version of Lord Of The Rings prequel The Hobbit.

J.R.R. Tolkien's novel is set to be turned into a major blockbuster under the direction of Guillermo del Toro and filming is due to begin in New Zealand later this year.

Sir Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf and McAvoy is rumoured to be the favourite to take the lead role of hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

The character was played by Ian Holm in the previous films of the fantasy franchise, but he is due to be replaced by a high profile star for the new movie.

A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James (McAvoy) is the one the film's bosses really want.

"They're expected to have talks soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future."

And director del Toro adds, "I can tell you it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice, completely magically we all have the same name."

I have nothing against McAvory, but I don't want him to play Bilbo. I really don't like the direction the casting people seem to be going. Daniel Radcliffe? Jack Black? WTF!? Bilbo's supposed to be in his 50s! Plus, I would perfer if the actor playing him wasn't a big name. When I first saw LotR, I hadn't heard of most of the actors and I liked that. I don't think this film needs star power, or it'll over shadow the story.

Opal - May 29, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
Strange. I wouldn't read to much into it. Even Del Toro said they won't be releasing the casting info until at least a year from now and that everything before that should be regarded as rumor or speculation.

I do think Mc Avoy is a good actor though but to young to play Bilbo.

mistofstars - May 29, 2008 10:07 PM (GMT)
I agree.
I think James McAvoy looks way too young.
But we have to keep in mind that Frodo should have also been in his 50s in lotr- and everybody agreed with Elijah...

Anyway, I don't like the fact that it seems they always want to choose a young "sexy" man for that everyone watches the movies

I agree with the whole Eli thing, but Frodo was described as being "fairer than most" wasn't he? But really my problem with them (possibly) casting McAvory would be that I sort of feel like they'd be using his recent rise in star power (as well has his good looks :P )to draw people in to see the movie.

mistofstars - May 29, 2008 11:26 PM (GMT)
Agree again
What annoys me the most about that article is this sentence:

As if Ian Holm wasn't a high profile star!

rine turelie - May 30, 2008 03:12 AM (GMT)
Hmm....well, I wouldn't mind him playing Bilbo. He can be my Bilbo anyday.

He's the fellow that played Mr. Tumnus in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Yeah, I think I could see it, with some makeup and a wig.

Bilbo was, what, fifty at the time of the Hobbit? I guess if Elijah Wood can play a fifty year old Frodo, then this fellow can play a fifty year old Bilbo.

I just think Ian Holm is WAY too old for it, honestly. I pictured Biblo to be younger looking even when he appeared in flashback in the LotR. I wouldn't be satisfied if Holm played Bilbo. Love the actor, he's just not my Bilbo.

mistofstars - May 30, 2008 11:30 AM (GMT)
Yeah rine, I don't want Ian to play Bilbo again also ^^
But this James-guy seems so ... wrong
