The Elvish Name Generator

i found this site while i was browsing the other day. my name is Linwë.
:D

BlueGold - April 27, 2004 08:32 PM (GMT)
:D I decided to try my hand both ways.

RL: I'm Ireth Celebrindal

as Blue: Eáránë Calmcacil

and lets all laugh as I try to pronounce these lovely names.

Entwife - April 27, 2004 08:40 PM (GMT)
I'm Alassë Lúinwë.

My hobbit name is Prisca Tighfield of Tookbank.

Prisca??? *does NOT feel like a Prisca*

Tant - April 27, 2004 09:04 PM (GMT)
My RL name in Elvish: Nienna Mithrandir, Hobbit: Dimple Boffin of Whitfurrows.
Tant in Elvish: Ranewen, Hobbit: Petunia.
Not sure I like Mithrandir. A friend of mine's first name would be Maeglin. :D

Azzy - April 27, 2004 09:18 PM (GMT)
hmm i would be Órelindë Elensar Øre? it means 'ear' in danish, not very flattering...

well without a name generator i can tell you my elven name would be Polodrina, it have the same meaning as my RL name :D

and my hobbit name would be Goldie Hamwich of Buckleberry Fern that is SOME goddamn title/name to wander around with

i love the elf names. but the hobbit names always turn out a little weird

Entwife - April 27, 2004 10:15 PM (GMT)
Hmmmm...when you type in Elijah Wood or Billy Boyd, their respective hobbit names come up, but not with Sean Astin or Dominic.

*goes to type in Orlando Bloom*

Tinker Bell - April 27, 2004 10:51 PM (GMT)
If y'all want your REAL elvish names, I would try the

Elvish Name Database

This database, which our own member Faenauliel worked on, doesn't just spit out a name for you, you make your own based on your REAL name.

For instance, if I typed in the name "Kelly", I get this:

Irish, English:
1. related to CEALLACH
2. wood. Sindarin: (group of trees, forest, wood) Eryn, Glad, Taur; (also 'material') Tawar; fem. Eryneth, Gladeth, Taureth, Tawareth; fem. (wood-maiden) Eryniel, Erynien, Erynwen, Gladiel, Gladien, Gladwen, Tauriel, Taurien, Taurwen, Tawariel, Tawarien, Tawarwen; masc. Erynon, Gladon, Tauron, Tawaron
3. holly. Sindarin: Eregdos 'tree, plant'; Ereg 'tree, thorn'; fem. Eregeth; masc. Eregon
4. warrior. Sindarin: Maethor; fem. Maethoreth; fem. (warrior maiden) Maethoriel, Maethorien, Maethorwen; fem. (warrior woman) Maethordis
5. lover of the elves. Sindarin: Elheron; fem. Elmelethril; masc. Elmelethon

This tells me all the normal meanings for my English name (some of which I knew were Warrior-maiden, and Associated-with-trees). The database then gives you the Sindarin words which correlate to these transitions, so you can make an accurate Elvish name for yourself.

All the names I've highlighted in Yellow are "elvish translations" of the name Kelly, from it's Christian meaning.

I think it's pretty damn cool :P

If you want to find out more about how it works, or anything, I'd highly suggest talking to Faenauliel, since she worked on the translations!

Faenauliel - April 28, 2004 01:08 AM (GMT)
:wall: "elvish-name generators" :wall: GAAAAAAAAAH!!!

I really do not mean any offense to the people who run these things, but IMHO it's horrid that they try to pass off generic Elven names of characters as "translations" of names.

The Elvish Names Database which I work on, as Tink said, takes the time to do TRUE translations using TOLKIEN'S Elvish languages.

Stop on by using the link that Tinkerbell provided above, and if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask away! ;)

doeeyedgrim - April 28, 2004 04:46 AM (GMT)
Well, I typed my name into the Elvish name translator thing, and it told me to look under "Carla" so I did, even though my name is Charlotte...

Name: Carla

Meaning: Italian, Portuguese, English & German feminine form of CHARLES; (the meaning is exactly the same as that of Charlotte, except Charlotte is the French female form of Charles...oh well.)

Sindarin: fem. Benniel, Adaniel; Adaneth, Firieth 'mortal woman', Dî 'woman'

Rose of Rivendell - April 28, 2004 06:35 AM (GMT)
I got Orelinde Calafalas (sorry, don't know how to do accent marks!) for one elvish translator.

Goldie Boffin of Needlehole for hobbits.

And for Sindarin: Meril or Melannen

I think I'd actually go with the first one, I like it the best!

Azzy - April 28, 2004 08:23 AM (GMT)
my name don't exsist in that database... all hail the lame scandinavian names :wall:

but as i said Rikke is from the name Frederikke, and Frederikke comes from Frederik.
Frederik means mighty. And so Rikke means Mighty.

and the word 'polod' means mighty in elvish. so i slammed a female ending on the original word, and viola i had myself a elven name

Faenauliel - April 28, 2004 04:43 PM (GMT)
Well... the Database DOES have Frederic, which has just a small difference in meaning (I did the research on this one ;) ):

Frederick, Frédéric, Frederico:
English/French/Spanish
From a Germanic name meaning "peaceful ruler", derived from frid "peace" and ric "ruler, power". Sindarin: Cossídh; masc. Cossídhon, fem. Cossídheth

If you wanted to have the actual connotation of 'peaceFUL ruler' you could use _Cossidhui_.

I have officially added "Frederica" AND "Frederikke" :D Hope that helps!

Also... you may also check the Quenya database. I don't go there as I'm allergic to i lam Nessnegnir (the language of the Kinslayers! :P )!!

_polod_ must be a Quenyan word, therefore you'd have to be careful, as I don't believe that the feminine endings work the same in Quendi. In Sindarin, for the word "mighty" you can use _beleg_ (great, mighty), or _taur_ (mighty, vast, huge, overwhelming, awful, high, sublime). You could add any of the Sindarin feminine endings to either of those and get a good name meaning 'mighty'.

Beckyboo - April 28, 2004 05:56 PM (GMT)
I much prefer Faenauliel's database. Nice to actually have names that mean something!

Rebecca: 1. Hebrew: knotted cord. Sindarin: Nornnordh; fem. Nornnordheth, Nornnordhiel, Nornnordhien
2. to tie, to bind. Sindarin: Gwedhi, Nedi, Taetho; fem. Gwedhieth, Gwedhiwen, Nedieth, Nediwen, Taethowen

tfutcher - April 28, 2004 06:27 PM (GMT)
My name is Tracey Futcher

Elvish: Séreméla Tîwele :P

Hobbit: Orangeblossom Took of Great Smials

Azzy - April 28, 2004 08:01 PM (GMT)
thanks a million Faenauliel :smooch:

odd, cuz i have a book here that say that Frederik means MIghty., but now that you say it - its true i head about the peaceful ruler thing too  -

and the polod thing, well its not that important i had a LARP character called that, and its still a cool name (Polodrina) nomatter if its correct or not

good site

Dernhelm - April 30, 2004 08:30 AM (GMT)
Generator: Merenwen Oronrá

Database: Doesn't exist. Not surprised though. I have never in my life found my name in a database, on a mug, or those keychains at Disneyland. My real name is the challenge of challenges, and I doubt even Tolkien would know what to do with it.

So for now, I stick with the random generator. :P

Vinca Took - May 1, 2004 12:28 AM (GMT)
My RL name in Elvish is Alatariel Melwasul
My RL name is Hobbit is Iris Chubb

My LoM name in Elvish is Eamane Culnamo
My LoM name in Hobbit is Bramblerose Proudfoot

I tried Lij, Sean, Dom and Billy and found the same thing how odd.

BlueGold - May 1, 2004 01:48 AM (GMT)
Alas seems there aren't even any M's in sindarin and I can't remember if I requested it the last time I was there. Same in Quenya. Why did I have to have one of those weird normal sounding names. The best meaning I've ever found is *of Mars, relating to the god of war* <_< yeah thanks. :wall:

LadyofLegolas - May 1, 2004 04:47 PM (GMT)
My Sindarin name is Adaneth.....it sounds beautiful! :sweet: :sweet:

Tarlwen - October 18, 2004 04:15 PM (GMT)
My elvish name is

RL: Ánië Lissësúl. Sounds beautiful but I still feel more like a Tarlwen...

"Tarlwen" was translated as Siralé Anarion, what is kind of funny since wrote it into the female name-generator and "Anarion" means "son of the sun" according to my elvish dictionary.... :help:

misswilde - October 18, 2004 04:53 PM (GMT)

Manveruwen - October 18, 2004 07:56 PM (GMT)

1. Manverúwen :D

2. Iréth Nenhárma

Gaia - October 19, 2004 08:38 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, somehow it's not working... :(

But I know that my first name is "cuile" or "cuilwen" in Sindarin.
Why o why didn't my mother know this and named me "cuilwen" instead of "Eva"?!?

Zoe - October 19, 2004 02:58 PM (GMT)
I love things like this, has anyone tried to find out their Pirate name? Anyway....
