Age: 14
Height: 5'4 Eyes: Dark brown/black Hair: Dark brown ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ragal Island, Lamir Manor: "Make a wish, Kalah!" a tall woman laughed, crinkled masses of hair flowing behind her as she moved towards a small child practically hidden behind a triple layer cake. The little girl, an exact replicate of her mother from the long hair to the sharp nose, scrunched her eyes in concentration as she thought of something to say before she blew out the four candles that decorated the top. Then, she sucked in as much breath as her small lungs could hold, and blew, her face turning an adorable shade of red. One candle remained, the soft glow of the flickering flame stubbornly refusing to blow out. The four-year-old, known as Kalah, pouted, dark eyes becoming big as she looked at her parents who stood beside her. "Will my wish still come true?" Her father smiled, bending down from his great height to look her in the eyes. "Of course it will. This just means that you'll have to overcome some obstacles for it to happen." The big eyes began to tear. "Of course," Kalah's mother continued for him, silently hitting him upside the head, "that makes the wish all the more precious when it comes true. Now, wipe those tears. We both have a little present to give you, and a face like that is not one to receive a gift." Kalah nodded obediently, rubbing her face and beaming once again. Her father slowly took a seed out of his pocket and held it out on his palm. Closing his eyes, he gave a mental push, and the skin of the seed cracked open. Almost instantly, a tiny, green stem unfurled, followed by even tinier, heart shaped leaves. Then, small flowers burst forth, sprinkling the plant with dots of white. Their daughter watched this with avid fascination, awe shining in her brown eyes as she scrambled onto her knees to get a closer look. She'd seen her parents do this for as long as she could remember, and she'd wanted to learn how ever since she'd first seen her mother heal a dying bonzai tree. So far, the only thing she'd been able to do was make a fern leaf quiver on the table. "Kalah," her father spoke with a certain seriousness that instantly caught her attention, "you've reached the age when we can start training your magic, and guiding it to become stronger. You need to learn control, and never to-" But she never heard what she should never do, because at that moment, their front door burst open with a deafening bang that made their plates clatter. In less than a second, a large group of men filtered in through the entrance and started throwing open drawers, turning over cabinets, and creating general chaos. "Kalah, get under the table!" cried her mother, pushing her daughter under the wooden surface before turning around to face the bandits. Her husband was already roaring in uncharacteristic anger, hurling all the briars and cactuses in the house at their vital organs while ordering plants to grow at an unnaturally rapid rate to wind around their arms and legs. What they hadn't expected, was that several of them were experts at throwing knives, and two lethal blades were slicing through the air towards their hearts before they realized what was happening. But they realized a moment too late. Kalah screamed as she turned and met her mother's vacant expression. She whipped to the other direction and screamed even louder as she faced her father's blank stare. Thick, red liquid was oozing out of both of them, and she knew, even at her age, that they would never smile at her again. The strain was too much, and she collapsed. A gathering crowd of unfamiliar faces covered her vision before she blacked out. When she awakened, the first sense to return was her hearing. Murmuring. Bits of sentences. Words. ".........useful.........magic....." ".....too young......remember...." And she fell unconscious again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Min, get yer lazy butt up! The boss is gonna have my head if ya don't start knickin' food for breakfast soon!" Min groaned at her nickname, despite having it for- how long was it again? She probably wouldn't even respond to her real name anymore, since no one had used it since....when? But it sure was better than "Min", the nickname she'd aquired for her height, or lack there of. It was short for miniatuur, which meant midget in some language or another. Sleepily, she raked a dirty hand through her short hair in an attempt to work out the multitude of tangles that resided there. Rolling off the empty rice sack that was her bed, she sprang into a crouch position and dived forward, pushing on her feet so that the momentum from the roll would allow her to end up in a standing position. Her daily wake up routine. As she walked down the murky hallway to the entrance, she passed a door that was slightly ajar. Voices erupted in tiny whispers inside, the light but a meager ray in the tiny room. Silent as a cat, she moved swiftly through shadows of the corridor and pressed an almond shaped eye into the crack. It was the boss talking to Knives, second leader of the group, and her closest friend. Well, if there were any on the streets. "Don't you think she's getting a lil' strong to be ignored? I mean, if she finds out about the secret-" Knives' baritone voice was heard through the crack of the door. The boss scoffed, "What, you mean that we did it? That we killed Min's parents?" "Not so loud!" hissed Knives, pushing back his chair as he got up. "She could probably kill us in an instant if she knew the truth! And she's the best thief in our gang, and you know it." A 'hymph' was all he got in return, and they both made their way to the door. The boss stopped short, turning to half face his second in command. "If she turns against her own family, then the solution's quite simple. We'll kill her before she kills us." He opened the door to be faced with a trembling Min. Her eyes were glazed over, and she was hyperventilating. "You....you did it," she wheezed, not noticing that the dirt floor wa starting to shake as fissures started appearing. "It was you all along!" And the floor erupted at the same time as her scream. Vines wrapped around the horrified men. Their arms. Their legs. Their necks. And the thick coils tightened. Other members of the gang came running at the commotion, lurching from the occasional shake of the ground. Shouts rang as they charged at Min, who was oblivious to everything. The thorny weed that was popular around the district sprang from the cracks, winding around the newcomers. Skin was broken and blood started dribbling from wounds. The shouts turned to screams. But they kept coming, and there were too many for her uncontrolled power. A knife eventually found her arm, and she cried out, falling to the ground. The men immediately attacked, punching and kicking until she wouldn't even be able to recognize herself. Eventually, the beatings lessened as each became more convinced that she was dead. Then, the gang scattered, remembering that the local police would be doing two rounds around their side of town soon. The silence was deafening. Min couldn't feel. She couldn't move. Couldn't breath. But it was better this way, because she could join her parents. Just as she was about to close her eyes, a shadow fell across her battered body. "Look at the mess you've made," she heard a man mumble. "My name is Niko, and I've been looking for you for a while now--" he paused, "What would you like to be called?" Darkness was filling her vision fast, and she vaguely recalled that this had happened once before. She whispered one word. "Kalah." -------------------- Close the world, txEn eht nepO
