Liverpool's chances of signing Fabio Aurelio from Valencia have been given a boost after the player announced that he will quit the Mestalla when his contract expires in the summer.

The Reds revealed that they have held talks with the player's agent Juan Figger last month, but Aurelio claims that he has not yet agreed a deal with another club.

"Nothing has been decided, but I am sure that something will happen," he said.

"There are propositions that are stronger than others, but none of them are 100 percent."

Aurelio refused the offer of a new contract with the Spanish club after being played out of position for the majority of the season.

"When the president came to talk to me I informed him of my decision," Aurelio added.

"The club made an effort, but my situation meant that I was not prepared to think about staying with Valencia."

Aurelio stated that he was keen to impress in his regular left-back role and force his way into the Brazil squad for the World Cup Finals, but has had a wasted season after being used as a utility player.

With Emiliano Moretti and Amadeo Carboni able to play on the left of the defence, Aurelio has been used on the left wing in place of Vicente, in central midfield and even as a forward.

His lack of opportunities in the back four allied with the fact that he has only completed nine matches this term have led to the former Sao Paulo player to move elsewhere.

"I was hoping to contribute a great deal this year and help the team leading up to the World Cup. I thought that after all my injuries I was ready to show what I could do.

"But it did not turn out like that and I feel like it has been a wasted year on a personal level.

"I have been given very few chances to play in my position at left-back, which has made me see that my future is not at this club."

We are losing a very very good player indeed. Even though he has not been used as a DL this season, time is bound to run out for the evergreen Carboni, and we will be needing a proper replacement.
