Searching the Library, (Ianto and invites)

[Viviane McArthur]

She had decided to persue her advanced degrees and had met with her old counselor. She had been advised to decide on a thesis to research. Heading for the library, she pondered her choices. Did she want to work on the more scientific aspects of Preternatural biology and work in the lab or pick a more esoteric subject like vampire bloodlines and how they worked. If she decided to stay out of the disection lab, she had many subjects to think about either about vampires, where she had lots of subjects to work with now, or she could research the whole idea of the necromancer and their powers. Either way she went, she was going to have to see what was available to her in the way of books to help her on her goal. She had a somewhat viable idea of what was available in William's library but she needed to visit the restricted sections of the school's library to see what they had that William didn't. It was going to take awhile even with her research skills. Most of the books there weren't in the school database of knowledge, just the titles were. So here she was, armed with her laptop, and a thirst for knowledge.

She approached the library desk and a man she wasn't familiar with was working behind it. "Hi, I'm a student of Professer Von Damien. He has given me permission to enter the restricted section. I'm researching subjects to write my thesis on." she explained. "Here is my permission slip for the area. I know I can't take the books out but I do need to go through what the library has."

Ianto looked up and rose as the girl approched. He was wearing black dress slacks, a black waistcoat with a fob watch in the right pocket and it's chain attached to the left, a dark red shirt, and a black and red striped tie that matched. He knew he looked dashing in it. He smiled and took the slip.

"Of course, Miss. Follow me please." He smiled and lead her downstairs and towards the section she wanted. "Everything on the subject you need is here. If you need help, use the red phone on the wall to contact me."

He opened a box and gave her a pair of soft white gloves. "Use these at all times handling any books. There's no food or drinks allowed down here. When you're done with the gloves, just drop them off in the blue bakset by the door. That's about all, so I'll just leave you to it unless you need help with anything."

She slipped on the gloves before going any further. "Well maybe you can help me, I'm researching anything on necromancers, maybe you can give me a place to start? I've checked the catalog and don't really see anything, but maybe you can suggest something appropriate? I have heard some things about reputed powers but I need more, and just haven't been able to locate any sources. And what do you have on Vampire blood lines? That would be my second choice of topic." She flashed him a big smile, it never hurt to be on the good side of any librarian when doing research, sometimes they could be a godsend.

"I can't get you anything on the bloodlines. Those books are off limits to me as well." he said, gesturing to a door at the far end of the room. "Only the City's ruler has that key." He pulled his own pair of gloves on and walked down the halls to where the isle for Necromany and the like were. He pulled a couple books and brought them to a row of 20 stands. He set each of the three books on a stand and turned to Vivian. "These are the best three to start with."

"These will be fine to begin with, if I really need to get in the ultra secure area I'll ask William for the key. I assume that is who you are referring to when you say the City's ruler." she smirked. It helped to know the head of the vampires if you were going to study them. "But these are great. Hopefully they can answer some of the questions that I want answered." she approached the first book. This was more than just a thesis question. It was apparently her life too. She was a necromancer it appeared and she wanted to know what that meant. It seemed to matter a whole lot to the vampires, as they had a law that necromancers were to be killed on sight, and she wanted to know why.

"Have you read any of these?" she asked off-handedly.

He shook his head no. "Since I was let go from the force, I try to keep myself away from the Shifters and Vampires as often as possible. The only one's I speak with are Jacob and Ione. Even them I keep at an arms length."

He pulled his gloves off. "I will leave you to it then, Miss." He gave a slight bow and headed back upstairs, dropping the gloves in the bakset on the way out. Once back at his desk, he sat down to continue his own research.

She sighed and turned to the books. He didn't know what he was missing but then again, to each their own. She wanted the information about necromancers more for her own benefit than to actually write a thesis. The thesis would come later, but first she had to get a grip on her own power. She had to stop these power spikes every time that she and William touched. It was embarassing to both of them. She turned the first page of the first book and started to read.

Several hours later, her laptop open and copious notes taken, she had a much better understanding of what was happening to her. She now understood why the vampires had a kill on sight order for necromancers and why she was in danger if anyone found out. She could actually control vampires like vampires controlled humans. And the mark that she shared with William gave her more power over all undead, not just zombies. She closed the first book and wondered what was in the second and third books but that was a task for another time. She would have to be back at the Horseman soon. She stood and gathered her belongings. Still wearing her gloves she headed back to the front desk. The same guy was manning it.

"I'm done with the first book, and I'll have to come back tomorrow to study the other two. That first one was a great help. Do you have a scan of it that I might get? I'd love to go over some of the more obscure passages again, with time to get actual translations of some of the latin phrases. I got the gist of it but the actual translations would be helpful." she asked politely.

He was half asleep when she came up. He gave her a tired nod and walked over to a drawer, pulling it opened it had various discs inside. He looked through them before handing her the disc. "I'll check it out under my name. Have it back to me in a week." he said with a tired grin as he used his employee card to check out the disc.

Stretching, he shrugged his jacket off and headed for the archives to put the books away. "Hope you found what you were looking for, Miss." he said to her.

"Thank you so much I did, and by the way I'm Viviane McArthur. I really appreciate this, it means that I can actually study these at my leisure. I'll be sure to get these back to you on time." she grinned. "I wouldn't want you to get into trouble." She slid the disks in her computer bag. "So if you aren't here who should I say these are for?

"Me. I'm always here." he said with a small smile, looking up at her. I'm Ianto Tailor, by the way. Like I said, I'm always here." he said with a shrug. "And you won't get me in trouble. You wouldn't be the first student I helped out like this. I'd rather see them make something of themselves than do nothing but a dead end job for the rest of their lives."

"A dead end job?" She laughed out loud, drawing evil looks from those trying to study. "Now that's funny," she lowered her voice. "Oh that's a good one." She noticed he looked a little puzzled. "You see I'm an animator, I raise the dead for a living and I've come back to school to get an advanced degree. So you see, I can't have anything BUT a dead end job." she snickered. "Don't worry, you didn't know and it just struck me as funny. Well, if you're always here, I'll see you around, I'm always in and out of the Library when I'm going to school. I love research and now that I have access to the restricted section, I'll be sure to be here often, so you'll see lots of me." she grinned. "And thanks for the disks, I'll bring them back soon."

He nodded and sat back down to do his own work. He was tired and just wanted to go home and sleep but he didn't want to sleep because he was alone. He smiled when a girl stopped and gave him a Starbucks coffee. "You're a gem, Allie." he said, giving the girl a kiss on the cheek and sending her on her way. "Allie's a sweet girl. Brings me coffee to keep me awake."

"Well most of what I do is at night so I sleep most of the day. So I only got up a while ago." she watched him with Allie, he seemed really sweet. "Do you need a break or something? I could watch the desk for you if you do, there won't be too many students around and if they want something, I could have them wait." Or she would just tell them where to find what they were looking for in certain circumstances. This library and her were old friends and she had walked most of the corridors and knew where to find some of the most obscure things.

"I'm fine. One of the night guards is out getting us chinese." he said with a smile. "Trust me, Phil and Roy, the night guards, take care of me while I'm here." He pointed to the floor behind him where some games sat. Apples to Apples, Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess, and Would You Rather. "See, we keep ourselves amused."
