Title: Making BR 1.30
{^TLS^}VirusX - October 19, 2010 11:42 AM (GMT)
What if the BR server switched to version 1.30, the server is so damn popular people would pretty much be forced to update. Given specific instructions in the Server Info about getting the patch would be suffice
Just a thought. or.. Suggestion.

The suggestion was actually discussed in the leaders section yesterday.
You'd instantly lose 90% of the player base who are too stupid or too stubborn to update.
Merely forcing the convicted cheaters to run anti-cheat is sufficient in my opinion.

I think by now that if they want to play there, they will have to update. Most of the player base actually is updated. That server will stay popular. I think its just better to run 1.30 Servers. It was just a thought. I will be running this little experiment for Kamil.
perrinoia - October 19, 2010 01:42 PM (GMT)
I guarantee that if Kamil hosted both a last hope and a legacy server, the last hope server would be empty. And if he hosted only a last hope server, a different legacy server would become the new popular server.

A legacy server still can be 1.30. What if every server in tribes became 1.30? Tribes would die? No. They love the BR server because of its stability and popularity. people go to other servers when BR server is down just to wait for BR server to be back up again. If he were to switch it to 1.30 people would see the people that are updated and go "dammit i gotta get the patch". It;s better to play legit then not at all. I think this should be tested. A test wouldn't hurt.

I can't argue with that any more than you can argue that an emo chick would not tie in a fight against an emo fish.

Exactly.
Although, it was just pointed out in the admin section that forcing clients to upgrade was what killed Kigen's server.

Yes because back then something cool as 1.40 didn't exist, also, more tribes players played and was to hard to control those numbers of players. I have faith in Crow and kamil and Bong, Im sure they can do it.
Omega - October 19, 2010 03:53 PM (GMT)
I'm one of those stubborn ones that couldn't be bothered to upgrade tribes.
Cheatproofing a server will never work, following one simple axiom: every time you try to make something idiot proof, the world invents a better idiot.
{^TLS^}VirusX - October 19, 2010 04:03 PM (GMT)
I still think it's worth a try.

With admins of varying bitchiness, who occasionally employ secret admin, you're usually fine.
it's a prevention/cure issue, but more importantly it's only a game.
Bongwater - October 19, 2010 04:31 PM (GMT)
the thing is.. with so many people running 1.30 and 1.40 it wouldnt be too bad.. but like perrin says it cant be a second server. it has to be all or nothing. an "experiment" server will always result in the 1.0 server being populated and the 1.30 not.
Its rare anymore to find players that are not running 1.30 anymore.
but for now our system works.
