Title: Big Plan For Sealife Adventure
Description: Adventure Island's little sister
Hysterix - June 6, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
From the Evening Echo...
SEALIFE Adventure could be extended to take in a children's centre, snack bar, restaurant and ecological fish farm, under new plans just unveiled.
The large-scale expansion of the Southend seafront attraction would replace the crazy golf course on the site.
The expansion is linked to the centre's plans to create a breeding programme for Dover sole at the site, to help restock the Estuary.
The new children's attraction, it is hoped, would help offset the £250,000 cost of the fish project.
Philip Miller, owner of both Sealife Adventure and Adventure Island is behind the plans. He believes the development will add a new vibrancy to Eastern Esplanade.
The new children's centre would be a separate two-storey building and include a drinks and snacks area and a restaurant. There would also be inside and outside play areas.

This is brilliant news - I've known about the plan for some time but it's now official so yay.
The seafront needs something on the site of that crappy golf course and this is perfect.
Also, Southend Radio is under construction as the article mentions - pictures will be on AIG very soon!

Wow. 17 and a half months, that's some good thread necro-ing.
Well, the extension hasn't been built yet, because the council can't make up their mind about what to do with the mini golf site. Should be happening within the next couple of years but it's a colossal project and these things take a long time. No dates have been set.
ROBERT KURN - November 25, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
well like you said it takes time a few years but its a hard choice

sam! - April 7, 2009 04:07 PM (GMT)
No I aint been there for about 2 years better get back up there soon.
andy76 - April 7, 2009 08:21 PM (GMT)
has most venomous replaced anything else, and if so what has it replaced?
Leemo - April 7, 2009 08:52 PM (GMT)
no its just one big tank i think check out the website.
Hurri - April 7, 2009 10:18 PM (GMT)
Most Venomous replaces Mr Morayarty, the Moray Eel who has been moved to Sealife Weymouth.
It features fuzzy dwarf lionfish, fox faced rabbit fish, leaf scorpion fish.. I'm not making these up!
Leemo - April 7, 2009 11:09 PM (GMT)
i thought the sealife adventure website put it up for april fools day but i looked yesterday and they had pictures they may have strange names but they look like normal tropical fish, but venomous.
Hysterix - April 8, 2009 12:54 AM (GMT)
So is it "The UK's No.1 Venomous Fish Attraction Based Within A Non-Merlin Sealife Attraction Despite the Similar Name and Similar Entry Fee"?
And can you not just go to Swallow's in Rayleigh and see a much greater variety of fish (and now reptiles too) for free? Ok, so they don't have sharks - but I think their indoor Koi tanks might even be a tad bigger... and as it's £6.50 cheaper (i.e. free) to enter, and their Cafe has prices that don't require a mortgage to feed a family of four, I know which I'd rather visit which is why we're not renewing our family annual pass this year. Not to mention the totally unjustified price rise!
Sometimes it feel like certain members of Stockvale went to the P.T. Barnum School of Business which states there's a sucker born every minute! You just can't charge premium prices for tacky seaside attractions.
We ALL know (whether we acknowledge it publically or not) that if something CAN be done on the cheap at AI, then it IS done on the cheap. Hence the lack of theming, the million and one missed opportunities to be a fantastic park, etc... but at least AI is still fun!
At Sealife, even the fish look bored! The sand barely covers the floor of the Ray Bay or the shark tunnel (the MAIN exhibits!!), many of the fish in these areas are injured, the decor is faded and WELL overdue a touch up, and the whole place just SCREAMS tacky! Is it an aquarium? An indoor play area for small children or a tacky seaside restaurant? At the moment it fails miserable on all three fronts. Pick one and stick with it for crying out loud!
Right at the start of this thread I was REALLY excited by a massive project that was going to put Sealife well and truly on the map. You can blame Southend council for delays re mini golf but come on, are people really expected to believe that the council put that aging relic of Kiss me Quick and Donkey Rides on the Beach ahead of a 21st century internationally acclaimed conservation project? If ANYBODY believes that they seriously need their head's examined!
Hmmm.... not really sure where that rant came from so I'll stop now! :)
Leemo - April 8, 2009 09:20 AM (GMT)
I havent been there in a while so im not to sure.....but swallows do have great fish.
mitchp - April 8, 2009 10:26 AM (GMT)
I aint been there for about 8 years.
Its getting to the stage of I cant afford it next week I might be going to ai how much is sea life
Hurri - April 8, 2009 11:34 AM (GMT)
Various parts of the aquarium have been repainted.
I agree it could be better but that can be said for any attraction anywhere, there's always something that can be improved. Sea-Life Adventure is a fairly good aquarium, kids enjoy the play centre and the play&pastry offer with Waves Cafe is well received...
The reason less work has been done than perhaps could have been is because SLA is waiting for the extension. When that happens, I can only imagine it will receive a full renovation and necessary improvements will be made.
As for 'kiss me quick' - I've seen loads of guests at AI with those hats recently! Old school is cool, apparently.

Sealife Revamp reported by the Echo:
http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/local_news...nture_aquarium/I've seen the plans, it looks good. I presume this puts the extension plan to bed, though..

it sounds brilliant.
as waves is changing to three shells could it mean it is becoming a chain of restaurants and more could be opening around the area.

Agreed.
But it does have a point lol.
Could you imagine opening your xmas presents and you get 50k to spend on sharks
Emma. - February 17, 2010 02:43 PM (GMT)
I've never been into the Sealife centre?
Is it worth a vist?
Hurri - February 17, 2010 06:06 PM (GMT)
It's not a bad way to kill some time when you're in Southend. I'm not convinced it's worth £9 admission fee though, I have to say...
But if you're going more than twice in a year an annual pass is only £18 so that works out as pretty good value over a few times.
Emma. - February 18, 2010 12:39 PM (GMT)
I am considering it lol.
But with all the rides there, I never have any time to kill I'm always busy lol.
