QUOTE (Ruth @ Nov 9 2009, 06:54 PM)
Before my spine surgery I had antibiotics for some dental problems I was having but had a slightly longer gap before having spine surgery. In the blood test you had on admission they would have checked your white cell count which must have been normal or they wouldn't have gone ahead with the surgery.

I don't really like giving out too much medical advice as I'm not a doctor but does your med regime include anti-inflammatories. The best person to see would be Mr S but I know you don't live in the UK so it's a long trip. As a last resort have you thought about ringing Mr S's secretary or bringing your review appointment forward.

I was in a lot of pain from week 2 to week 6 post op & couldn't leave the house due to undiagnosed nerve pain in my spine. I nearly went to see Mr S sooner but didn't like to make a fuss. In retrospect I wish I had as I deconditioned myself considerably doing lots of lying down & just pottering round the house.

Hope you get some answers & much needed pain relief soon.

P.S. I must have been posting a similar time to you & Alastair. Maybe it is muscular, due to being deconditioned & doing a lot of sitting. It's hard to comment on but I guess you know your body best.

Hi Ruth, I have started back on Meloxocalm today, I have emailed Mr H and I am going to see him next Tuesday so I am sure he will help. I am just really concerned that the pain is not going away I would have expected the muscles to ease up after I stopped sitting for a week.

Chris its really early days in your recovery. I was really in a bad way after my 2 level ADR and wasn't up to starting any formal rehab or exercise until 5 months afterwards. it is a huge op, but I did get back to a really good range of movement and activity with minimal pain. Bodies take a long time to heal especially if you have been incapacitated for while beforehand.

--------------------
2009 Std meds - Gabapentin, MR Tramadol, Paracetemol, Laxatives
May PLG Fusion L5/S1 Charite in situ
March Started appealing dismissal at work. April Dismissed
2008 June MRI showed additional prolapse L2/L3
Feb Caudal Epidural, on Gabapentin since due to pain.
2007 Deterioration L5/S1 Facet arthritis, Loss of disc height.
2004 Return to Work
2002 Aug started rehab
March 2 level ADR Charite L4/5, L5/S1
2000 Broadbased disc prolapses L4/5, L5/S1

My concern is that I was almost free of back pain but after prolonged sitting the pain Is incredible. I am just scared it will not reduce.

Most likely you have just overstretched a muscle or irritated nerves. It could well take a few weeks to settle down but if you take your meds regularly, apply heat or ice, walk little and often, stay in a position for no more than 30 mins you will be giving your body the best chance of healing and recovering.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I will be doing all of those things. It's just obviously scary when I was in such good condition.

Will have to learn to be patient.

ohmy.gif Chris,

Sorry to read you've been suffering and hope things improve for you very soon. Hopefully this is just one of the ups and downs of recovery and resolves. Even now six years post surgery I couldn't sit all day without suffering.

Take care

Lynda

Sorry to hear of your setbacks Chris, I am sure you will see some improvements very soon. I know Mr S likes everyone to keep the muscles moving around as best as can be so may be the moving around more will help. You are still doing well all things considered.
Very Best to you
