Hi everyone,

I was just wondering what happens with your meds when you go in for ADR - do you take them as normal or are they stopped while getting stronger pain relief?

I really don't want to stop them suddenly and I haven't been given any advice by my GP. Last time I stopped the tramadol and amitriptyline all in one go (after duff advice from a GP) I spent the night hallucinating and I could really do without that after a major operation in hospital tongue.gif

Thanks again for answering all my questions!!

Elaine

This should get covered in your pre op, if it doesn't bring it up and they can advise you. Personally I took the same meds as before but some doses were increased as well as the additional stronger meds for both spine ops (and other ops I have had whilst on pain meds). I think it is dependant on what you are on and what you are being given.

Hi Elaine,
I would continue to take your usual medication until told otherwise, take it with you in to hospital, which is good because it lets you continue with your medication until changed by the hospital staff, plus it's also good evidence of the medication that you have been prescribed by your doctor prior to surgery.

People who have surgery overseas, quite often take a letter from their doctor plus a repeat prescription for their usual medication as evidence both for the hospital staff and for the Customs and Excise authorities.
Good luck,
