Procedure for entering a motorway (principally for slow
wide loads)

• the escort vehicle should enter the motorway in
front of the load;

• from the slip road, the escort should ensure
that the hard shoulder is clear – special care
should be taken when entering from short slip
roads;

• the escort vehicle should be positioned in the
right hand lane, with the load in left hand lane;

• the escort vehicle should enter lane 1 before
the load enters the motorway, ensuring that no
vehicles can get between the escort vehicle
and the load;

• the driver of the load should be advised that
lane 1 is secured;

• if, due to the width of the load, lane 2 also needs
to be secured, procedure above should be
followed;

• normal escort position should be resumed. If it
is not possible to carry out this action safely an
additional escort vehicle should be employed.

Anyone agree with all of this?

-Nick

someone please explain to me, how that is a safe way to enter a motorway unless you've got blue lights?

so if you read it and follow the passage ......the escort is sat in the inside/outside lane,,, near enough stood still with his eyes shut and prying to which ever god he follows hoping that the approaching traffic has read the NEW CoP and are slowing down to let load on to the motorway............... ninja.gif

I would love to meet the chap who came up with the CoP, maybe go out for a meal, or take in a film at the local odeon then maybe go for a nice drive and find a nice quiet idelic spot in the country, and maybe, if their is enough time, shoot the twat.

Their are times when you have no choice but to be at the front when entering the motorway, like UKPC says for example, comeing out of immingham. But to actuly put this in the CoP, bloody stupid. If we followed this practice on all motorway on slips then it wont be long before our HATO friends are trying to pick up the last of our remains on a shovel.

However, most of us say that we follow the CoP, but, do we really?? after all, this is part of the CoP. Nick is working on a 'different look' vehicle, what about a different look 'Escort Proceder' as well. The whole bloody thing needs to be put in a shredder and started from scratch, by someone who actully knows a thing or two.

we all go out buy one these 2 bit plastic pipe one on front bumper one on rear it goes onto the offside of car /van its into lane one first then when you need lane two you move into lane one that solves finding an additional escort at very short notice if not needed it retracts safetly onto side of car/van this also acts as a crash cushion and as for the driver you get this thing

You are then undertaken by a HATO vehicle who mistakes you for a gritting lorry.
He gives you a cheery wave as he sails past in lane 1!
........ see http://www.nationaltraffic.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2020

(sorry HATOs, just a little inter-professional festive joke there! wink.gif )

As I read it, if you enter the motorway before the (slow) abload as the HA CoP advises, and you need to take lanes one and two, then you go to lane two and somehow slow existing traffic down to a crawl.

Your success will depend upon following drivers being compliant, and not undertaking you. This is a growing British disease, along with 'feral' cycling on the pavement, and ignoring traffic lights. (Ah!, gone are the days when the worst traffic offence was "driving a horse furiously on the public highway").

So, in reality what the CoP is actually telling you to do is to IMPOSE AN INSTANT ROLLING ROADBLOCK.

This is something the police use blue and red flashing lights to do, and HATOs red flashing lights.

Now, i'm not suggesting that we revert to swinging red oil lamps out of the drivers window, or frantically wave a red flag at anyone who will look, BUT if anyone thinks that I am going to successfully introduce an instant extra slow rolling roadblock on a busy motorway using just amber beacons, then, I'm sorry, but which planet are you from?

To attempt to adhere to this particular CoP advised manoeuvre, using just the legal warning devices allowed us by Law, could easily see any one of us in Court charged with dangerous driving.

The defence of "following the CoP" wouldn't hold water.

....or have I totally misunderstood the advice?... blink.gif

sounds about right nik.......or you could leave load on slip........travel down to the next junc...travel back up passing the load to the next junc....leave motorway then rejoin motorway and if you and the driver have your shi~ together you just might, time it right........ ninja.gif

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTYz8rOmG9Q
Not a problem over there but try to get to do this in uk think we would be frowned upon but if we had trade plates we might get away with it that solves the problem of getting onto the motorway from charnock richard services southbound
