It was a beautiful, bright sunny day in the good old town of Prosperity, North Carolina. There was absolutely no way that Juliet Deveraux was going to stay inside all day and study. Sure, finals were coming up, but there were better things to do. Besides, most of her finals were musically inclined anyway. The only things she really needed to study were her lines for her jury, though she already knew them pretty well. So, really, there wasn’t a reason that she shouldn’t go into town square and just relax. She’d probably get herself some kind of ridiculously sugary, delicious iced drink and then sit out on a bench in the sun with a book and read. From time to time, she’d probably people watch, since that happened to be one of her favorite pastimes, but she’d mostly just sit and read.

With that decision in mind, Juliet prepared herself to go out in public. Thankfully, it didn’t take her long to feel ready to go out. Juliet never wanted to turn into one of those girls who couldn’t leave the house unless she’d been in the bathroom for two hours and had absolutely every single hair in its place. After all, sometimes it’s fun to be messy. Quickly, she threw on a yellow sundress, flip flops and a little bit of makeup before grabbing her purse and leaving the apartment. It was a nice day—she’d walk into town.

It didn’t take very long for her to get there either. One of the perks of having an apartment and being a college student was that said apartment had to be close enough to school for Juliet to walk there. And, considering school was basically in town, that meant the apartment was close enough to walk to town from—no car necessary. Though, come to think of it, Juliet loved driving. Her car was back home in Greenville, Tenessee, though. Oh, Tennessee. She did miss it sometimes, but North Carolina was fun, too. It wasn’t that far from home, anyway, if she really thought about it—not as far as New York was going to be. In just a few short months, Juliet would be moving to the Big Apple to pursue her dream career and try to get herself on Broadway. She wasn’t really sure how well that was going to work or what she would do for a living while she was trying to get booked for a show, but she’d figure it out.

Upon her arrival in town, Juliet couldn’t help but smile at the beautiful day—plus, the upbeat pulse of Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” in her ears helped put her in a pretty good mood as it were. Singing along quietly to the music, she pushed open the doors to a popular little café and looked up at the big menu that came down from the ceiling. Of course, just as she stepped in, Juliet had the displeasure of spotting her ex-boyfriend, Lucas Moriarty just a few people in front of her in line. Maybe he hadn’t noticed her come in. Maybe, if she left very nonchalantly, he wouldn’t notice that she was ever there. There were very few people that Juliet wanted to avoid—he was definitely one of them.

The break up had been rough. Juliet had been convinced for a while that she was in love with him, which was probably stupid to begin with, considering his reputation. Anyway, to make a long story short, not only was Lucas constantly flirting with other girls, but he cheated on Juliet god only knows how many times. Of course, that was the last straw and Juliet had to call it quits like any rational person would do. It all ended on a rather sour note, and to be perfectly honest, if there was one person she really didn’t like in the whole world, it was definitely Lucas. Luckily the universe obviously really liked Juliet and made sure that Lucas would be in the very same place at the very same time as his usually sweet as pie ex-girlfriend. Well, there goes a really good day. Hopefully he hadn’t seen her, and she could just quietly back out. Fingers crossed, anyway.

luke moriarty had been back in prosperity, north carolina for about a week. the week back in prosperity only served as a reminder for luke to why he left the town in the first place. prosperity was just too small of a town. everyone knew everyone else's business which is something that luke never really liked. he especially didn't like everyone knowing his business when he was a child. it seemed like everyone in town knew of the moriarty's marriage troubles when he was younger. luke vaguely remembered how many people in town would ask how his parent's were doing. yeah sure, that seemed like a general enough question to ask, but luke always felt like that particular question had some other meaning to it than just asking how the moriarty family was doing. he had always felt like they were prying information out of him about his parent's latest fight just so that they could tell the whole town about it. luke was already having a terrible time dealing with the fact that his parent's were doomed to fail. he really didn't need the whole town jabbering about it. that would only add more to his distress.

but whether lucas liked it or not, the gossip spread around town about the moriarty family and their dysfunction. luke often believes that the whole town knew about his parent's divorce before he did, but that's probably not true. it seemed like the whole 'gossip chain' thing hadn't changed much since lucas had been away with his dad in california. no one in town had been shocked to see him when he first arrived. they just went on with their daily lives. luke was hardly greeted with the great 'welcome home' that he had wanted. hell, he was hardly greeted with much of a 'welcome home' at all. it really didn't matter that luke hated this place and didn't want to be here. he still thought that he should get the huge 'welcome home, luke' that he so rightfully deserved.

luke was disappointed that he didn't get the welcome home that he wanted, but he still continued on with daily activities just like he had never left. he figured that the fact that he didn't want to be here and obviously wasn't too welcome shouldn't get in his way of trying to enjoy this place. luke decided that morning that he would head over to the beach to enjoy himself. he had been in town for a whole week and had yet to go to the beach, so he figured that it was about time to go. it didn't take long for luke to get ready for the beach. it took about five minutes for luke to get dressed and grab a towel, then he was out the door. the beach was within walking distance of luke's home, but he had to pass through the town square before he got there. luke was passing through the town square when his favorite little cafe caught his eye. that was when luke decided that he was thirsty, so he walked right into the cafe and began to wait in line.

lucas was waiting in line when he felt eyes on the back of his head. it was one of those odd feelings. the one where you knew someone as staring at you, so you had to look. that's why luke looked. luke smirked a little whenever he saw his ex-girlfriend, juliet deveraux, standing a few people back from him in the line. well, this ought to be interesting. he thought to himself, smugly. once luke received the sweet tea that he had ordered earlier, he backtracked in the line to stand right next to juliet. "hello jules. wow, i haven't saw you since i left. you're looking good," he said, a light smirk playing on his lips. he took a small sip of his drink before he continued, "so.. have you missed me? i imagine that you've had some long, sleepless nights." luke knew that he would only get on her nerves by hitting on her in the first place, but he was sure that jules would be pissed that he dared to ask if she missed him.

Juliet had always believed in luck. She always made a wish at 11:11, she always wished on eyelashes—it was just yet another one of her adorable quirks. Of course, luck could be good or bad, and as the universe would have it, her luck wasn’t super good today. It wasn’t that today had been a total waste and completely terrible and all that, it was just… did Lucas really have to be in the same coffee shop as she was at the same time? Was it really necessary for him to come back to North Carolina at all? Even if he did come back to North Carolina, did he have to be here? Did he have to notice that Juliet was right behind him in line? She wasn’t usually one to complain about life or how things were working out for her, but this was just ridiculous. When Lucas left, Juliet thanked her lucky stars and proceeded to get on with her life. It was much easier to… not be miserable about the way the break up had gone down when Lucas wasn’t around. Prosperity was such a small town, after all. Before he left, it was like he was everywhere. After he left, it was a nice breath of fresh air—exactly what she needed to get over him.

Now, it wasn’t that Juliet wasn’t over him. She really was. It was just that seeing Lucas made her angry—Juliet Elizabeth Deveraux was very rarely angry. She always tried to keep those emotions out of her life, even when they threatened to spill over. Considering the very small amount of time that Juliet spent angry, she didn’t always know how to handle herself. She was going to try to keep calm this time, mostly because she definitely didn’t want to cause a scene. That was the last thing she needed. It wasn’t like the entire town was oblivious to their break up when it had happened—they were practically a power couple around Prosperity. News traveled fast, even if Juliet had only told a couple of people. Anyway, Prosperity didn’t need to hear all about how a public argument between Juliet and Lucas had broken out in the middle of the little café in town. She could hold her bad feelings for him in until she got home and then she’d spill it all to her journal or even call one of her brothers.

Collecting herself and taking a deep breath, Juliet looked up at Lucas and nodded slightly, clearing her throat. “Lucas,” she said, attempting to be cordial. She could just be the bigger person in this one, for sure. She didn’t have to push any of his buttons or try to get to him in any way to be satisfied. No, she would be content with simply being nice to him. After all, he probably wanted her to completely lose it in the middle of a public place. He wanted to see her squirm because he was a total sadist. Well, Juliet wasn’t squirming—inside, maybe, but definitely outside. Lucas wasn’t getting any kind of visceral reaction from her and Juliet would have the pleasure of going home and being satisfied and proud of herself. “I didn’t know you were back in town.” Polite, but not friendly. Calm, but cold. Good. If this had to happen, at least Juliet was handling herself.

And then, of course, Lucas had to say the things that he knew would make her most upset. Juliet narrowed her eyes and gritted her teeth and paused, calming herself down before making any kind of attempt to speak. “Thanks,” she said coolly, folding her arms across her chest as she neared the register to order her drink and pay. “Yes, Lucas, long and sleepless nights. I’ve just been tossing and turning over the guy who cheated on me more times than I can count on both of my hands.” Juliet rolled her eyes and glared at him as best as she could. “Maybe you’ve confused my sleepless nights with yours.”

luke would be lying if he were to ever say that he didn't know what happened with juliet. he knew exactly what had happened between the two of them and would be lying if he said that he wasn't to blame. he'd always been a prick, especially when it came to his relationships. lucas moriarty wasn't the type of guy that would commit himself to anyone. he would always end up screwing it up by cheating on the girl with someone else anyways. if you were a licensed psychologist, then you would probably say that lucas refused to let himself near someone due to his parent's messed up relationship. that was probably the truth, but you would never get luke to admit to some sappy shit like that. because well, he was luke moriarty. luke moriarty wasn't some kind of sap that sat around thinking about feelings or openly admitted that he was afraid to trust someone with his heart.

he smirked whenever she stated that she had no idea that he was back in town. "if i would've known that you weren't notified that i was coming back by our wonderful grapevine, then i could've made sure that you knew." he said, "hell, we could've had a little 'welcome back' party where you could've welcomed me back properly." the emphasis that he had put on the last word made it obvious that his meaning in it was anything but innocent. of course, anyone that knew lucas moriarty knew that when he suggested having a private welcome back party that he only wanted sex. he knew that he had absolutely little to no chance of getting juliet in the sack because she hated him so much, but it was worth saying just to annoy her even more.

he simply ignored her 'thank you'. his compliment hadn't really been meant to be taken seriously. it was a rarity that luke ever complimented anyone. the only time that he really even bothered to compliment anyone was when he was trying to get a girl in bed with his smooth words. "oh jules, i knew that you missed me. you just couldn't sleep without me right there next to you, right?" he said, a big cheeky grin on his face. he laughed a little bit as she said that he was confusing his own sleepless nights for hers. he shook his head, "no. i've been sleeping just fine." he then thought for a few moments before adding in, "well... after i get done with the girl that i brought over to my apartment." luke knew that he was disgusting and a prick. he also knew that every word that he was saying now was just getting under juliet's skin. and well, he was loving every single minute of it because he knew that she was squirming despite her cool exterior. it was just a matter of figuring out the right things to say that would push her buttons enough and make her lose that cool.

It was really amazing how Juliet ever could have even been remotely inclined to think that she loved him. Lucas was such an obvious jerk, she was beginning to wonder what was wrong with her for not having noticed it until it was too late. It wasn’t as if he didn’t have a reputation—he had one, and a bad one at that. However, Juliet was a firm believer in not passing judgment based on reputations and gossip. Unfortunately for her, this time the reputation and the gossip were both true. Stupid Lucas. How could he be satisfied knowing that he was such a douchebag when it came to girls—when it came to pretty much everything? It was simply baffling how he could stand to be satisfied with himself knowing that he’d treated so many other girls poorly in the past. They didn’t deserve that. Juliet knew she certainly didn’t deserve to be treated like that. No, she deserved to be treated very well—she deserved a Prince Charming. Too bad Lucas Moriarty was nothing even vaguely close to Prince Charming. He was the bad guy, despite his charming smile and perfect hair.

Juliet couldn’t help but grimace with disgust when he suggested that she welcome him back properly. She may have been a total sweetheart to everyone all the time, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t get the innuendo that he intended. “You’re disgusting,” she said, rolling her eyes and placing one hand on her hip. Part of her was inclined to think that if she acted pissed off enough, he’d leave her alone, but Juliet knew that wasn’t the case. Lucas got a kick out of watching her squirm. He liked to say disgusting things to offend her and piss her off to try and get a rise out of her. Well, he wasn’t going to get one. Juliet Elizabeth Deveraux had a very good handle on her temper no matter what any of her stupid ex-boyfriend would try to say to her. She wasn’t going to get angry—not on the outside, at least.

It was perfectly okay to be angry on the inside, though, and Juliet was rapidly reaching that emotional state. She could feel her head starting to pound with frustration every time she gritted her teeth just a little bit more. God, what had she done to deserve this? She knew the answer was nothing and that Lucas was just a jerk, but it was still totally unfair. Just seeing his face brought back millions of little, but still painful memories that she’d been trying to repress. Despite her general happy-go-lucky demeanor, Juliet actually spent quite a bit of her time alone upset over various things, Lucas being one of the main ones. However, she couldn’t let him know how badly he’d hurt her—that would just make him happier, the little sadist. No, she just had to grin and bear it and know that he would get what was coming to him in the end.

“It’s actually been surprisingly easy to sleep without you next to me considering I never slept with you next to me,” she said coolly, adjusting her hair slightly. He really did know exactly what to say to make her upset, but she could be strong. She could face him in this little café without freaking out at him. After all, she’d gone this far in their run of knowing each other without completely blowing a fuse at him. Sure, she’d gotten upset when she broke up with him, but never once did she yell at him. Juliet Deveraux did not yell, and that was a fact. No matter what Lucas said, no matter what he tried to do to piss her off or what other girls he chose to bring into the conversation, Juliet Deveraux did not yell. “Ew,” she replied. Did he really think that kind of thing was okay? She didn’t want to hear about his latest conquest and she was pretty certain that that girl, whoever she was, didn’t want Lucas talking about their… time spent together to ex-girlfriends in coffee shops. “Good to see you haven’t changed a bit, Lucas. You’re still as much of a prick as you were before you left.” She knew he wouldn’t take it as an insult, but it was more for herself than to offend him. Maybe one day he would realize what a colossal douche he had become over the last couple years. Or, maybe not.
