ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hi and welcome to Wolfshaw Academy for Magically Gifted!

There is a heatwave passing through South Australia, not to mention the drought; the grounds are mostly dry, with large brown patches marring the large lawns. Easter is approaching, the ban to the local town has been lifted, and the students are becoming more and more frustrated with their principal...

Physical Description: Daedric is an average looking male. He’s of average build, but tends to lean towards the better muscled side of average. Generally he keeps his hair cut short but it is currently getting to the point of being shaggy. Being a strong swimmer has resulted in what musculature he does have as he enjoys swimming in any body of water large enough to do at least a few breast strokes, including the stream at Wolfshaw.

He’s a casual dresser preferring to wear a pair of shorts and a regular or sleeveless tee. He like his shoulders because of all the swimming he does but hates his toes which, in his opinion, have never looked pretty or normal so he always wears shoes. He has a hemp necklace and anklet, both of which his mother gave him.

Personality: Daedric tends to be a serious young man, being more like his father than like his mother. He finds this weird because with his parents divorcing when he was two, he’s never spent much time with his father. Sure, his father visits and he’s gone to visit his father but they’ve never lived together or formed a real, long lasting bond. Nonetheless, Daedric is studious, striving for the best grades he can get.

He realizes that part of the reason why he strives for good grades, and is so serious, is because he’s constantly trying to earn the approval of his superiors. He’s not a brown noser, or blindly agrees with his superiors – he has his own opinions about things – but he’s always felt the lack of having a stable father figure in his life. His mother has been a great mother but being more inclined to be free-spirited she hasn’t provided that firm reassuring presence he’s desired.

He’s not really introvert but he’s also not terribly extroverted. Because of the awful nickname his mother gave him – Peach – he’s always had to pull off a macho bravado because essentially everyone he meets assumes he’s gay. He’s not particularly good at being macho, instead generally coming off as cold or distant. He also tries to be a lady’s man but he can’t quite manage to pull it off. Idle conversation isn’t really a strong point of his.

Daedric is more of an observer then a doer. In social situations he hates to be the center of attention, yet ironically he loves drama. He’s always willing to listen to others problems and to try to find solutions but he’s more of the ‘feel your pain’ kind of a guy instead of a ‘solve your problem’ guy. He’s almost always smiling, and willing to share a smile and a friendly nod.

He’s steadfast with his beliefs and his friends, a trait he learned from his mother. Sometimes it causes him to butt heads with people or to get into arguments. Daedric is also fortitudinous, which combined with his steadfastness, makes him a good person to have as your friend.

Family: Daedric’s parents are divorced and have been since he was about two years old. He lives with his mother, Alisha Nuefeld, but she insists on being called ‘Wheatgrass.” She runs a meditation and wellness clinic. His father, Gregory Spall, is a businessman who currently resides in Cairo, Egypt. Gregory is who Daedric gets his wizarding inheritance from.

History: Daedric never understood how his parents met or decided that a relationship between the two of them would be a good idea. His mother was a Canadian hippie who moved to Australia after she graduated from high school. His father, born in Melbourne, was studying business. Daedric assumed it must have been an attraction of opposites. After Daedric was born, his parents’ relationship became strained as Gregory spent more time at the office. Eventually they divorced and Gregory moved to Cairo where he began working for one of the largest manufacturers of flying carpets.

Alisha, or Wheatgrass, never had any issues with Gregory being wizard-born once she had discovered that about him. In fact, she had taken it as a sign that she should focus even more on naturalism and spirituality. She feels no resentment towards him even though they could not prevent their marriage from failing. They had ended up becoming two different people from when they had met and decided that it was better for both of them to separate. She still missed him and would love him forever.

His mother is the reason why his nickname is Peach. She was the one who originally started calling him by that name. Daedric detests it but, of course, his friends find it hilarious. Grudgingly he accepts that he’ll never be able to get rid of it.

The first time Daedric had shown his magical abilities was when he was five years old. He and his mother had been sitting in the living room meditating. At that age Daedric didn’t really understand what meditating was all about, but his mother had decided to start cultivating her son’s spirituality at an early age. They had been going through the relaxation rituals and Wheatgrass had been speaking soothingly about being as light as a feather, imaging oneself lifting on the warm currents of air and surprisingly enough Daedric truly had begun to float. It was quite a shocking event which had lead to an unfortunately bruised bottom. Five years later his Wolfshaw Academy acceptance letter arrived.

His arrival to Wolfshaw Academy had been very exciting for him. His very first class had been Transfiguration which turned out to be his best and favourite class. He couldn’t say that he was so lucky with History of Magic which he had ceased to take as soon as he could. He had been excited for learning how to ride a broomstick as well, but that had turned into a catastrophic failure, actually falling off of his broom after finally managing to achieve flight. His skill with the broomstick improved slightly but his balance was so horrible that he perpetually felt like he was going to fall and had to slow down to a crawl in order to corner. Otherwise there was little remarkable to mention with his first four years of studies.

Daedric spent his fifth year in Cairo studying at the Abraar Academy. Part of his reason for wanting to do this was to get a chance to spend more time with his father. Of course, the plan didn’t work as well as he would’ve hoped: his studies kept him busy and his father was continually working long hours at Aladdin’s Magic Carpets. The only upside to this was that his father gave him a flying carpet after completing his fifth year and was able to pull the appropriate strings to allow Daedric to import the carpet to Australia. He’s glad to have a flying carpet and not have to deal with using a broom anymore.

Now, having returned to Wolfshaw Academy, Daedric has to deal with the aftermath of the Darkness. Even though he wasn’t really friends with Ailsa and Devon who had died during the Darkness, it’s still weird for him to deal with the death of two students from his year. Also, because the other students have developed a bond from dealing with the Darkness together, Daedric doesn’t quite feel like he fits in with any of cliques, leaving him floundering for social acceptance.

From where Daedric was slumped lying on his bed, he looked up to see an owl tapping it’s beak against the window. Most people would find this to be an odd occurrence but it was normal for Daedric. He rolled off of his bed and went over to the window, opening it to let the brown owl into his room. It fluttered noiselessly across the room and landed on the back of a chair. There was a letter tied to the bird’s leg.

Daedric’s heart leapt. Was it his long awaited OWL results? He scampered over to the owl and untied the letter and tore open the seal. He pulled out the piece of parchment and unfolded it slowly. It was his OWL results. Now that the piece of paper was in his hands, he wasn’t nearly as thrilled to unfold it entirely. He sighed and continued to unfold it.

He read the first line: Transfiguration – O. “Yes!” thought Daedric excitedly. It was his favourite class.
He read the second line: Defence Against the Dark Arts – E. He frowned. He would’ve liked to have done better, but the mark was good enough. He had felt like he could do better coming out of the exam.
He read the third line: Herbology – O. Another good mark.
He read the fourth, fifth, and sixth lines: Charms – E. Potions – E. Astronomy – E.
He read the last line: Ancient Runes – P. His jaw dropped. “Damnit!” he cursed, wanting to rip the piece of paper. He gritted his teeth together and clenched his fists, crushing the letter. He didn’t bother to look at the last grade – History of Magic – knowing it wouldn’t be any better.

“What did I do wrong!?” he exclaimed angrily, frustrated - it just hadn’t made sense this year. He sat down heavily on the bed. The owl, startled by his sudden movement, fluttered from its perch and flew out the window leaving him alone in his room.

There was a knock on his bedroom door and it opened. His mother entered the room. “What’s wrong, Peach? I could hear you from downstairs.” she asked.

“I got a ‘P’ in Ancient Runes,” he told her.

“Oh hunny,” she said, sitting down beside him and putting her arm around his shoulders. “I’m feeling a lot of negative energy in you. I want you to take a deep breath,” she demonstrated. He rolled his eyes but nonetheless took a deep breath as well. “Now, count to three: one… two… three, and exhale.” They exhaled. “Good, now come downstairs and I’ll make you some chamomile tea and we can talk about Ancient Runes.”

Daedric sighed, yet smiled as he followed his mom downstairs. She was so weird, and continually embarrassed him, but she was always able to make him feel better. One point for the hippie-mom.
