ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hi and welcome to Wolfshaw Academy for Magically Gifted!

There is a heatwave passing through South Australia, not to mention the drought; the grounds are mostly dry, with large brown patches marring the large lawns. Easter is approaching, the ban to the local town has been lifted, and the students are becoming more and more frustrated with their principal...

Noah was bored, and that new principal wasn't in the room. Not many people were, as it had only just announced lunchtime. He'd arrived early because of his boredom during his free period - it didn't occur to him to do any homework until it was only fifteen minutes until the bell went. And by then, what could he get done? Exactly.

Hence why he was early to lunch and standing between the Astier and Balker tables, looking at each one thoughtfully.

He could sit down at the Astier table and not risk anything - or he could sit at the Balker table and see whether Wyman's techniques were still effective or she was relying on scare tactics. It wouldn't surprise him, and he hated to be someone's puppet. He wanted to pull his own strings, thank you very much.

Still, pain was a strong barrier between his rear end and the bench at the Balker table. He didn't know how bad it would be, but it wouldn't surprise him if it would fry his ... boys. Did he want to risk a whole new generation of Amstrongs? A whole heap of little Noahs? And he was hungry, too ... it would be so easy to sit at the Astier table and devour a couple of sandwiches.

He didn't move, though, and ran his hand through his hair as he tried to decide what to do.

"Oh, if only there was an angel on my shoulder!" he cried dramatically, peeking at his left shoulder to see if one miraculously appeared. Much to his disappointment, it did not.

"Ta da," Madeleine replied as she entered the dining hall and came to stand behind Noah, though in a somber voice that didn't match her words.

Madeleine was tired. Scratch that, she was extreeemely tired. Once again, she'd let her procrastination habits get the best of her, and while she had several nice watercolors to show for it, it also meant that she'd stayed up long past her usual bedtime (which was already late as it was) scrambling to finish all the essays and readings she'd put off.

So perhaps it was her dazed and lethargic meantal state that accounted for the fact that she'd just spoken to a total stranger. Well, okay, Noah wasn't a total stranger, she knew his name and his house at least, but like so many others in this school, she'd never actually spoken to him before. What the hell's gotten into me? She wondered. Lack of sleep, she told herself matter-of-factly. Must be too tired to feel awkward and shy today. Which for her, was a blessing, in spite of how tired she felt.

Noah jumped about ten feet into the air (okay, it was more like a centimetre, but ten feet sounded more impressive) when someone behind him spoke. He spun around ungracefully, nearly losing his balance, and instinctively went to grab the person closest to him. Unfortunately for him, he missed.

The ground was very hard, and for a few seconds Noah sat still, a little dazed. Then he blinked and looked up at the person who had caused this sharp pain through his butt, legs and back. Really, it was very rude of the -

"I have an angel!" he said happily, grinning at the girl standing before him. She was quite pretty; slender with a heart-shaped face, green eyes and dark brown hair ... Noah had to take a moment to stop his brain from staring. He didn't recognise her at all, so she was probably in a different year. Younger? She looked younger, though he knew that didn't mean anything.

"You know," he said, hearing the amusement in his voice. "I'm pretty sure an angel would have cushioned my fall. Are you one of those little devils instead then?" He raised his eyebrows. If she came from Hell he wanted to go there!

Madeleine grinned sheepishly and brushed her hair out of her face, though she probably should have left it there to hide the fact that she was blushing. Here she'd gone out of her way to speak to someone and she'd made them fall over!

Luckily he seemed to be taking it in stride. "Are you one of those little devils instead then?"

"Well, I might be," she smirked, leaning over to give hima hand up, though she was so small she wasn't sure how much help she'd actually be in assisting him. "Depends on what you need one for."

"Well, I might be. Depends on what you need one for."

Grinning, Noah took the girl's hand as though he was going to use it to pull himself up. Instead, he just held it lightly, his legs and other hand to push him off the ground. He was almost as ungraceful getting up as he had been falling over, but he wasn't known for having great co-ordination. He tried to leave as much of his weight off the girl as possible, but didn't let go of her hand once he was standing.

"What are you offering?" he replied, using his favourite tactic: answering with a question. It never failed him, or so he chose to believe. His grin was unfaltering, though he knew from his immediate reply he probably made it sound like he was propositioning her. He couldn't help but wonder how she'd take it, but he was in no hurry to hook up with someone. Besides, just looking at her was a bit intimidating; he felt his ego swell with the knowledge she was talking to him.

"I have some homework that isn't done, and some kids have been annoying me lately..."
