Where can I find info about the distinction between the three?

White = as the Gods wanted it.
Grey = balance
Black = knowledge is power...

That means that it is NOT true that white is good and black is evil by far!

GAAAHHH!!! Nooooo!!!!... Ahem! excuse me, I just had a lapse...
anyways...
Why? (Balance=D&D)
Tell me that the situation is not the same, because if it is, then I'm going to cry and hit the wall with my head. Or something. But at least they do not deal in absolutes in TDE. I hate it when RPGs go D&D. I'd discuss this subject further, but that would be off-topic and all.
So, what do you mean by balance? (And I would think that these distinctions are not specifically in-game terms?)

If we talk about simplicity, I would describe the differences of the Right (white), Middle (grey) and Left (black) Way this way:

*White guild: Magic should serve the twelvegods and the divine order.
*Grey guild: Magic should serve science and people.
*Black guild: Magic should serve the magician him- or herself.

I think Rondrikan summed it up pretty nicely.

The Alliance Of The White Pentagram sees magic as a force that was not originally meant to be used by mankind and was only accessible to them because of Madas Sacrilege. Thus they seek to use magic to uphold the god-given order in the world and better the lives of those who live by the rules of the twelve

The Great Grey Guild Of The Mind devotes itself to magical research and acknowledges no boundary to that mission. Only through continued research and accumulation of knowledge can the world progress from the primal state that was chaos to the perfect state of enlioghtenment in the golden age, where there will be no more distinction between good and evil.

The Brotherhood Of The Knowing follow the principle "Knowledge is Power". Most of the members of this organisation are extreme individualists, determined to follow their own theories and world views and to shun any artificial barriers that would be applied to them by outside forces. That which binds all of the "brothers" together is that they all strive for power, but not for the greater good, just for themselves. There are numerous reasons for this endavour, reaching, from simply being a control freak to being afraid of the world ingeneral and trying to make oneself less vulnerable. Although being in the Brotherhood or accepting their values does not necessarily mean that you commit evil acts, but it certainly does mean that you probably would not hesitate to do so if you believed that it would further your research or increase your power.

It will probably make me unpopular here to make this comparison, but Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter Books would have been a perfect example for a member of the Brotherhood, but it stands to reason that even Albus Dumbledore would hav had reason to join.
