A.V.I.A.S was a failure.
It blasted the Red Star, sure enough, but rather than being eliminated completely, or blasted out of orbit, the Red Star broke into several large chunks, which gradually drifted back into Pern's orbit. Thread was no longer predictable. Thread began to fall at random intervals, in different places, sometimes in two places at once. Of course, the DragonRiders could not keep up with such demands, and it didn't take long for Thread to have found its way to the ground, and then to have burrowed under. Pern was dying. Slowly, but surely, it was dying. Seeking a shoulder to lay the blame upon, the DragonRiders began to fight amongst themselves, something that would have apalled their ancestors. Seeking to change the past, and therefore the future of Pern, a young Goldrider gathered together four others, one of each colour, and together they made a series of calculated jumps into the past. They convinced their ancestors to destroy A.V.I.A.S, but returning home proved to be impossible, for their time no longer existed, that future had been wiped out. And so the five companions were dumped at some mid way point...They found themselves in Western Weyr.
