the evening hour that strives homeward
THE VIOLET HOUR

Stanmer Park College, school for the elite, for the children of privilege and impeccable breeding; home, in fact, of the modern aristocracy. Its halls are filled with sophistication, an age-old element from the days it first opened, hidden away in the shielded village of Stanmer, on the outskirts of Brighton, England. It has always assumed a stance of superiority to the city that lies so near, and Brighton has been no stranger to the visits of the Elite students from the school - and as a result, there has been conflict. For nearly as long as there has been Stanmer, the students and the residents of Brighton have been at odds, the easy-going town not particularly fond of the alleged superiority of this elite, and the students not at all fond of their social position being challenged. But this conflict has never been a loud one; it has been present in scoffs, looks, avoidance and a few snide remarks when one group encountered the other, but for the most part, neither side has paid too much attention to the other. But times are changing.

The change takes place within Stanmer Park College, where the hire of a new Headmistress at the school has brought about a new arrangement: Scolarship acceptance. No longer will lineage and societal standing alone determine who enters the halls of Stanmer Park College; from now on, students from all levels of society are able to gain acceptance - provided, of course, that they show promise in Art, Science, Math, English, all the various fields of study the school provides. Scouts have been sent out to schools around the world to look for these most promising students, and now, both scruff and poise are filling the halls.

The Elite students, of course, are none too pleased with this change, nor are their families, and even the residents of Brighton will have to deal with this change of scenery. How will the conflict be affected? Will it escalate? Will it spread? Or will these changes have positive effect on this school so heavily influenced by the traditional values of aristocracy, and its relationship with the community that surrounds it? Maybe both, maybe neither, but what is certain is that Stanmer Park College will never be the same again.

If you step through the doors of local pub Yorke's, you might find yourself privileged to meet one of the few genuinely decent fellows in Brighton and Hove - Oliver Yorke, manager of Yorke's Pub. Unfalteringly friendly, with manners of an English gentleman and a smile that melts hearts, he is easily approachable, the barman that listens to your tales and woes, and who makes it his objective to put people at ease in the comfortable atmosphere that is his establishment. You might find this man rolling through the streets of Brighton on his skateboard, feeding pigeons at the park or as an enthusiastic spectator to Saturday's match, but whatever the situation you find him in, you will find him as he is - sincere, always genuine.

Ollie's player, Charlie, joined us here at Violet Hour shortly after we opened, and has since then brought a second character to the board in the saucy, confident, quick and wily Michell Gallo. Open, honest, warm and funny, he is a valued member of the Violet Hour family, not to mention a sterling writer and champion RP-ing partner.

RELATIONSHIP PAGES
Relationship pages, also known as plot pages, are where you can post a thread to keep track of your characters relationships with others. This is not required, but highly recommended as things can get more than a little crazy with multiple characters involved. Don't forget to sometimes update them, in the fast paced world, feelings and relationships sometimes change!

WANTED PLOTS & THREADS
Sometimes it's a little difficult when you first join a board to break into plotting with people you don't know. Well fear no more, here you can post a plot ad with your brand new, or not so new, character and others will tell you how they think their characters would get on with them. You can also post open threads here so more people will be aware that they are there, and that they should join.

DORMITORIES
The Dormitories of Stanmer are a mixture of old and new buildings, though the new are built to fit in with the aesthetic of the rest of the school. Roughly 80% of the student body live in these buildings throughout their studies at Stanmer, so it's rarely quiet and often rowdy. Whether old or new the buildings are divided into flats, housing four students each, four flats to each floor.

Each bedroom has a door which locks and en-suite bathroom, while the living space, kitchen and laundry room are shared by all four inhabitants. Cleaners are in regular attendance and a large security team attempt to keep order, particular after dark.

The Dorms are surrounded by tended gardens with two outdoor swimming pools, one heated, one not which are open for access between 7AM and 9PM. There are three locked gates, accessed using a key card, at various points around the dormitory complex, a key to get into each building, a further one for individual flats. Students will need to keep a hold of all three to get into their own room.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the dorms, though students usually compensate by smoking out of windows. There is a limited car park, which is only for use with a permit, which can be applied for before the start of the new term.

CLASSROOMS
Stanmer is notoriously strict about attendance and punctuality. If you're not in your class ten minutes after it begins, don't bother coming and good luck explaining that to your tutor. Classrooms and lectures halls are the basic run of the mill set-up; rows of chairs or chairs and desks, facing front, usually with a board, projector and computer for the lecturer to use. Laptops are allowed but pen and paper are preferred. Labs, studios and music rooms have sub-forums here.

CAFETERIA
Although each dorm is equipped with a kitchen, students often for-go their own attempts at cooking for the cafeteria, which is open from 6AM to 10PM. The food is mostly healthy and hearty, using local produce and the menu works on rotation to keep things interesting for both the cooks and those eating. They do themed nights every week, serving food from other countries alongside the set menu.

STUDENT UNION
The student union occupies a building separate from everything else. There is a large bar/night club over two floors, which is often host to bands and DJs. Below this is a cafe, which is turned into a venue for film screenings or comedy and performance nights. There are also a few conference rooms for use by the college societies and a small art gallery, to which students can submit their work.

STABLES
The stables are right on the edge of the campus, with access to the rest of Stanmer Park. They are used primarily as boarding for student's horses, so don't come here looking for riding lessons. BRIGHTON BEACH
Brighton Beach, a stretch of sea-front principally located between piers, is a sand-free shingle beach, although it is sand when you go into the sea, which has been awarded the Blue Flag award. It is a popular location, which has a designated nudist area (south of the easterly part of Kemptown), and the Monarch's Way long-distance footpath heads west along the seafront above the beach. In addition, part of the eastern side of the beach has been redeveloped into a sports complex, which has courts for anything from beach volleyball to ultimate Frisbee, and opened to the public in March 2007.

BRIGHTON MARINA
The Brighton Marina is one of the largest Marinas in the world, and was constructed between 1971 and 1979, although developments within it have continued ever since. It now contains a large Asda supermarket and two groups of boutique shops, restaurants and bars, plus a hotel, a bowling alley, a health club, a casino, and a multiplex cinema with a multi-storey car-park built over and around it. On the east side of the marina there are several gated communities consisting of townhouses and apartments, some of which come with their own moorings, alongside public moorings and facilities for boats and their users. Both harbour arms are popular locations for local fishermen; the east breakwater is often packed to capacity during summer weekends, and there is regular sightseeing and fishing boat trips from the marina.
