Levski Sofia

Sports Club “LEVSKI” - Sofia was founded in 1911 by a group of students at II Male High School in Sofia and the main kind of sport that was practiced was football.

The club was officially registered on 24th May 1914. That date is considered to be its birthday date. The name of the club given in memoriam to the Apostle of freedom Vassil Levski was proposed by one of its founders - Boris Vassilev (Borkisha).

The name of the club has been changed by force three times during the totalitarian communist regime, from 1950 till 1957 - “Dinamo”, from 1969 till 1985 - “Levski - Spartak” (after the union of the club with “Spartak” - Sofia) and from 1985 till 1989 - “Vitosha”.
The name of the club for its true friends has always been “Levski”.

Mincho Kachulev designed the badge of the club and it was produced in 1922.
The first hymn of the club was created in 1924 after the text of D. Simidov, the melody was composed by Hristo Manikov.

At the beginning yellow and red colors the basic colors of the club, and from 1920 till now the blue has been accepted as basic.
In 1914, the first officially elected management of the club was the following: Vladimir Grigorov (Valdisa) - Chairman, Georgi Manolov - Deputy Chairman, Krum Dinkov - Secretary, Boris Vassilev - Cashier, Stefan Toshkov and Atanas Iankov - members and Kostadin Manolov - manager.
During the first years after 1914, the football team of LEVSKI consisted of the following main players: K. Gigorov - goalkeeper, K. Manolov and K. Dinkov - Defenders, S. Stoyanov and B. Vassilev - Midfield, V. Grigorov, C. Genev, P. Stoyanovich, G. Manolov and D. Sirakov - Forwarders.
Initially the club did not possess a field of its own and the training was held on the empty place called “the hillock” (National Palace of Culture has been built there) and afterwards on the drill ground of 6th infantry regiment. Not until 1924, the Sofia Municipality provides the club with a football filed which was finally built in 1933. Today the Vassil Levski National Stadium is situated there.

Levski lost its first official match with FC 13, Sofia with the score of 0:2.
Till 1921 no football championship was carried on. In the summer of 1921, when the Sofia Sports League was founded out, which united 11 clubs from Sofia, the official Championship chronicle of the “Blue” has begun.
Levski won the first match in the championship for the season 1921/22, held on 18 September 1921, with Atletic, Sofia, scoring 3:1.

Levski has 23 national titles, 25 national cups and 1 supercup of Bulgaria! During the communist regime Levski became a symbol of the struggle against the communists! That's why our rival became the communist team of CSKA! Levski has the largest fan base in Bulgaria.

Our club stadium si Georgi Asparuhov!

Herrengymnasiums in Sofia gegründet.

Maybe you can also tell something about friendships/politics.

Our team was found in 1914, thеn Bulgaria was a monarchy with king, after the Second world war the communist party get the power in hers hands and made her own football club - CSKA. From that day on Levski become the club of the people with right and free thinking. Communists made theirs team champions 26 times for 40 years(!!!) :anger :dont and every other team was suffering specialy Levski. Since then Levski fans are the people with right thinking and now the ultra groups are too right winged.

About the frendships: most of our fans support Lazio and some small group go to Rome for some games, i don`t now for any other big frendships.

Well, a big part of the fans are right-thinking but not all. ;)

Being a Levski supporter is not following certain political rules. We also have apolitical fans...

I am not sure for a full 100 percent, but I know vigilantes was founded in 1978 and in that time they also had their logo yet, as you can see in the link

vigilantes banner in the early 80's

A more recent VIGILANTES banner

maybe do they have had the same inspiration i guess ;)

the old National Fanclub established 200+ fanclubs in every village in Bulgaria and gave them those flags. Those banners are very, very stupid and usually are carried by 3-4-5 guys from small towns who study in Sofia.
I can assure you that this season you won't see those flags ;)

Would many of you lot be coming to ireland in few weeks europa League 2nd round?

Seems to be a few of you on our forum, that said it was all shite you posted.

Redline - July 11, 2010 04:35 PM (GMT)
Don't mind the internet hools, there are a lot in Bulgaria, aged 12-13 but mostly 7-8 on intellectual level. :bab

As far as the travel - it's hard to say. The economic situation in Bulgaria is still shit, so a travel to Ireland is a bit of a luxury. Still, there are a lot of Bulgarians in foreign countries (immigrants, students) so there might be present a decent number of Levski supporters from the UK.

Lilywhite - July 13, 2010 06:02 PM (GMT)
I don't think many dundalk fans travelled at all. It was very expensive for flights.
Really disappointed would of been a great trip.
