Clashes At Greek Protest

ATHENS (Dow Jones)--Clashes have broken out Thursday at a protest in the Greek capital, Athens, between Communist demonstrators and hooded, self-styled anarchist youth.

Several hundreds of the youth attempted to force their way through a peaceful protest organized by Greece's Communist-led PAME union in front of the parliament building opposing Greek government austerity measures.

But the Communist protesters, numbering in the thousands, clashed with the youth before chasing them across the city's main Syntagma Square and beating them with sticks. The anarchist youth fought back by hurling rocks and petrol bombs.

Riot police then entered the square to restore order. There were reports of several injuries.

The clashes come as Greece was hit by a second day of strikes and protests Thursday, with tens of thousands of people gathering outside parliament ahead of a vote on a new package of unpopular taxes and spending cuts.

Under pressure from its international creditors, Greece's government this month submitted legislation that would further cut public-sector jobs and wages, slash pensions for high-income earners, curtail collective-bargaining rights for workers and enact taxes, among other things.

Late Wednesday, parliament approved in a preliminary vote the legislation in what is seen as a positive development for the final passage of the bill, expected to take place later Thursday.

it was anarchist/far left against official communist party of greece

Anarchists story is totally crap. Anarchists want to bring revolution and to be vanguard of working class,but don't have ability to do such thing. Communists defended Parliament from mindless adventurers, who will burn institutions but wouldn't achieve any goal. Revolution isn't video game.
