Predictably, the scuffles in Edinburgh between police and protestors on Monday are getting the standard 'aren't anticapitalists evil anarchist thugs?' treatment in the British press. However, it looks to me like it wasn't the anarchists breaking the law...

Indymedia's got some interesting stuff about Monday's events, notably footage of coppers who removed their identity numbers and wrongfully arrested protestors.

I was watching the BBC footage supposedly live (with a pause for editing and putting it into the right time slot) I had no idea what the Police were expecting to happen. No one remember what happened at Peterloo?

With us it really depends on which TV channel you watch. The report I saw was by one of our prime newsshows on a day that the socialist VARA had its turn at presenting to programme. (the media bias depends on the day you watch)

The reports followed some Dutch antiglobalist protestors on their journey to Scotland, interviewed them. They (young people, white/black scarf, silly hairdos type) got like 20 minutes to give their point of view. I did not see a counterpoint. (Although I admit that I switched it off because it was getting disgustingly sycopanthic) The whole thing was interlaced with scenes intended to humanise them. "Hello comrades!" welcome at the train station etc etc. their hopes and dreams and all that shit reporters ask when they want the viewers to like someone.

The national a-political (*coughcoughcough*) broadcaster NOS did pretty much standard coverage. Shot of politicos. Live8 reference, anticapitalist thugs clashing with police. Snooty preconcieved reporter remarking that live8 could make a difference. Yawn. I hardly watch the Dutch news anymore, I vastly prefer Euronews.
