Could Dave revive The Goodies?, If they can revive Red Dwarf...

I've been thinking...if Dave have the funding, the desire and the connections to the BBC to remake Red Dwarf, could the same be done for The Goodies?

I do have a vague outline for a Christmas Special, which could act as a one-off (with possible openness for new episodes), similar to how Red Dwarf and The Powerpuff Girls were brought back for anniversaries. Here it is:

"Christmas, Come Back"

In the 21st century, the Goodies are all but forgotten about. One loyal fan, Jeffrey Jumper, has been tunnelling underground since 1981 to get to their headquarters and meet his idols, only to find it is empty. He presses the Emergency Recall Button (a big red button), only to find he has voted for his favourite Goody in an online interactive competition. He finds the latest newspaper and is shocked at what he sees - Christmas is being cancelled forever. He must find each Goody and bring them together.

Graeme is now a successful DJ, having produced numerous radio shows and podcasts. Tim, jealous at his success, appears on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue after Graeme grudgingly suggested it for him to get money, only to find he is still doing it 30 years later. He also works part-time as an advertiser selling specialised royal tea sets, dressed as a giant teapot on street corners ("I am, literally, a teapot"). Bill, now an environmentalist, is secretly writing the hits for Hannah Montana and other big pop stars, and is frustrated at not receiving credit for his work. Having brought them all back, they each picture how to go about reviving Christmas (each image would recall episodes where one Goody would go mad with power and the other two would try to stop him). All initially have trouble getting over their hatred for each other, but Jeffrey helps them work together and regain their confidence and friendship. He tells them of a world without the Goodies (like in "It's a Wonderful Life!") and they all make peace.

Jeffrey also comes up with a few saner ideas. Bill attempts to conquer the pop charts with a new hit; Graeme drums up online support, and Tim tries canvassing. As they prepare to leave, they realise they'll have to use their deeply despised trandem. However, Jeffrey has made some nifty changes - their new iBike is comfortable and stylish.

They try everything from turkey farming to makeshift Nativities and giant Christmas puddings to get support for Christmas, but to no avail. Eventually, they realise the only way is to haunt the perpetrator of the Christmas ban, namely one Bob Cromwell. They then proceed to act as the three ghosts - Tim as the Past (dressed as the Baked Beans schoolboy), Bill as the Present, and Graeme as the Future. He is a changed man, and he immediately renounces the ban. Christmas is saved.

Jeffrey thanks the trio for their help, and wonders if they will continue to help the world. They receive a telegram from the Queen to thank them, and she asks if they could help her with finding her lost throne. With that in mind, the Goodies ride off into the sunset, for possible adventures anew...

Let me know what you think! Obviously a lot of stuff is vague, but it would be a great way to refer to early episodes, with stuff like the teapot panic, Land of Hope and Glory, A Walk in the Forest, Graeme's sideburns, the Funky Gibbon, the Baked Beans ad, the trandem...all sorts of things, if they are done right.

I think the above material shows good imagination with some nice unexpected twists and turns [which characterized the original show]: it also contains the spirit of fantasy and absurdity that ran through the shows like a stick of BLACKPOOL ROCK.

I myself have often imagined what the show would have looked like if it were still around today; it would undeniably appear and look very different, with more polished CGI EFFECTS, for a start, which would have transformed the look from the full-scale giant props/elaborate gags we all know and love from the first time round..

'DR WHO' is unrecognizable to the show of my youth for similar reasons, but is still very popular with moden audiences. so who knows?

Hopefully your ideas can kick-start renewed interest in new material, Gluben, though I'm not exactly sure where the boys themselves stand, regarding rekindling the flame; they always seem to champion the notion of more terrestial repeats first and foremost [possibly 'testing the waters' for some new shows.].

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I think they would probably prefer repeats and DVD releases more than new episodes. Still, that path through Dave could well be the only way to get some interest.

What does everyone else think of my plot outline?

The squeeing fangirl in me likes ANY concept that involves The Goodies, and while the tree-hugging hippie in me isn't so keen on the idea of the later-years Goods hating each other, inter-Goody bickering has always been goood comedy.

Welcome aboard, Gluben! biggrin.gif

Just read your pitch now, and I'm liking it! I like all the ideas of where they end up post-Goodies (it's like the I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again 25th Anniversary, which if you haven't heard is excellent) and the idea of a loyal fan tunnelling to see them is a grand un too! biggrin.gif

The only thing I would perhaps alter is getting rid of Jeffrey Jumper sooner, the later Goodies episodes worked better because they didn't have a guest giving them jobs to do and taking too much focus away from the plot, so perhaps he could incarercate The Goodies (a la The End) so they're left with little choice but to bond again and figure out a way of saving Christmas. Or, perhaps Jeffrey could lock them in a Big Brother-style house, where he's not actively involved in the scenes but he could be a the voice of Big Brother, trying to coax the Goodies back to the good old days and making them watch old clips of how great they used to be (with the odd Rolf Harris, Tony Blackburn and Nicholas Parsons videos to get them in battle mode! biggrin.gif) That's just an idea anyway...

I'll leave it at that, I don't want to hijack your story, but I do think it's a great idea and I'd love to see The Goodies return! smile.gif

Although it would probably finish them forever, you know how the Goodies were never shy to put the boot into people they didn't like very much? (Hello, Nicholas Parsons, Rolf Harris and just about everyone in the 'Royal Command' episode!) I reckon a modern-day Goodies show should focus on that. It'd be hilarious. Imagine it...(for argument's sake the 'victims' here are people I don't like!) angel1.gif

Horne and Corden trampled by a mental sheep like in 'Rome Antics'
Russell Brand 'Ecky Thumped' - fatally
Jonathan Ross squashed by Twinkle
The Big Brother house destroyed by Zebedee
Alan Carr eaten by Dougal
Chris Moyles shot by a celebrity hunter (who then mutters "Now for Comedy Dave!")

I get a strange kick out of watching veteran comedians grumping on about the new breed. For more of this, see Spike Milligan's fantastic 'Room 101' appearance. rolleyes.gif

Thanks very much! Yeah, I did worry that Jeffrey would impose too much on the trio. The other idea I had was to somehow kill him off partway through, so then the Goodies would try to be friends in his memory, only to reveal that he's still alive at the end or something.

I agree with all of these, and the "Ecky thumped - fatally" one made me laugh out loud!

This is a forum on Dave's website where people can suggest shows they want dave to bring back!
Now what could we suggest, I wonder....

I'm going to say something controversial. As much as I cherish the show and would love to see them do more...I don't know how they would go at this late stage.

If they were up to it and would still keep it in the spirit and sensibilities of the original (i.e., not turn it in to something resembling Little Britain or some such) then fine.

However, and this is the really controversial part, what are the chances of making a 'New Goodies' type show with new (and sympathetic) actors/comedians and actually making it work and not be an embarrassment to the original?

You could have the old Goodies in a hand it over type role in the first show.

I wouldn't worry saying that, Nose Vole, I think the chaps have admitted themselves that they wouldn't be up to doing what they did then - or at least not the physical 'slapstick' stuff anyway. A Goodies radio show, on the other hand, has been mentioned and could be quite interesting!

It is a shame there isn't a show out there that really lampoons the current trends of today (panel shows and impressionists excluded) - I don't know if an actual remake of the Goodies with new actors would work, but certainly a 21st century version of a trio getting up to no good wouldn't be a stretch... Look at Top Gear! tongue.gif So long as the original wasn't forgotten but rather acknowledged for all they did, then I think it would have potential.

As for now, however, when are we getting the *original* Goodies back on our telly?! unsure.gif

It would be fantastic to see the original shows back on the tele....

Or even more on dvd would be nice! What's up with that? Why hasn't there been another release yet?

I guess you're right, however, I did mean a different trio, not three actors playing Tim, Bill and Graeme.

The format is at least semi-unique and it's a pity we don't get something new these days that is like it. I'm not even talking about the topicality thing here either at least not in an obvious way.

I'd change the format slightly myself in light of the times. Not that the original was lacking in any way but more to reflect and to counterpoint the pessimism that I feel these days, not that it would be up to me. I'd inject more pathos and irony without ultimately tipping over into taking things too seriously.
