About 2 weeks ago i ordered a 5C collet chuck for my lathe. I ordered the lathe chuck ($170), a a chuck mount adapting plate ($30) and a set of 5C collets from Little Machine Shop web site. They sent the order by UPS and it took almost 2 weeks to get to central NY from California. The package arrived today, and I started the installation. The adapter plate came threaded 1-1/2"-8, form LMS, but was 6.250" in diameter, I had to turn it down to 5.125" diameter, and turn the mounting register down to 3.740". and mark the holes for the mounting bolts. The chucks mounting bolt holes were drilled for 8mm x 1.25mm bolts, I enlarged the holes to 25/64" and recounterbored the holes for 3/8"-16 mounting bolts, which I had in stock. Then mounted the chuck to the adapter plate and check the run out.

Jack

Probably a long threaded tube thru the headstock.

There is a key in the side of the chuck that when rotated, tightens the collet into the chuck, there is no thru bar. The 5C collet is threaded at the outside at the back to tighten the collet, and on the inside at the back for the collet stop, for repeated operations. the collet sizes available go from 1/8" to 1-1/8" round, they also have collets for metric, hex and square stock.

I made a mistake in the title its a #3047 collet chuck

Franz knows what 5C collets are Jack.

He also knows that a lever collet closer is more efficient for production type stuff because you don't need to stop the spindle to advance your stock. Not seeing the usual "dial" to tighten it with, or the draw tube (like my Royal collet closer uses), I was curious how that unit worked. Now I know, thanks for explaining.
