Title: Visit from an ARTIST !

Markopolo - September 17, 2005 12:01 AM (GMT)
Hello boys and girls ! Today I got a visit from a "Heliarc Artist" !

I'm not going to mention his name....(you all know him)......

He was at the shop for just a few hours today (not nearly enough).....and gave ol' Marko a first-class demonstration on Heliarc welding !

When I saw his beads (on aluminum and steel), it made me want to cry....they were absolutely beautiful ! :(

See if you can name the "mystery visitor".................... ;)

I hope its not a layaway Plan. Give it to Franz! He's in a sensitivity training program and might want to help some one out.

Seriously.......todays learning (thanks to "Arcdawg")............

#1 - I wasn't aiming the torch properly. (Needed to be more perpendicular).
#2 - Wasn't holding the filler rod properly ( Need to lay it down more).
#3 - Wasn't "moving" correctly (need to move straight, not "whip").
#4 - Need to hold a closer arc.
#5 - Need to apply the filler RIGHT AT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE PUDDLE.
#6 - Need to keep the arc RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PUDDLE.
#7 - Need to work on my timing..............

The couple hours he spent with me taught me A LOT ! ! !

.......Thanks Brian, and you're ALWAYS welcome here ! :) :) :)

PAUL !.......First of all, you......and any other friends on this rag, are MORE THAN WELCOME at my place ANYTIME ! ! !

The "little Cokes".........

Arcdawg and I were playing "phone-tag" for a day or two before we finally got hooked up. My boss is out of town and, as such, my work duties were kind of "catty-wampuss". I promised Brian that I would be here at two o'clock when, in reality, I didn't get home until after three ! We finally hooked up on the phone and since he was "just around the corner"......I asked him to give me an hour to get "settled in and level". I had to go to the store for some things.....I asked him what his drink would be, and he said "Coke is fine". Fast-forward to the store.....the ONLY Coke they had was (The LAST six-pack on the shelf) the little cans ! I don't drink Coke, so I just wanted to get a supply in for Brian.......So I ended up with a six-pack of little cans ! <_<

I don't buy pop in those two-litre jugs........as soon as you open it, it goes flatter than piss-on-a-platter. I like to buy all my pop in cans.

(P.S......I ALWAYS have Vernors ginger ale on hand) ! ;)

7018 - September 18, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
Vernors ginger ale is good for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marko,,,,Sorry Could not resist,,,,But would that be upstairs or 6 ft. down :D  Jack

Markopolo - September 18, 2005 10:56 PM (GMT)
Sorry Storts ! I think they call it "soda" down here.....
Up home (Michigan), it's ALWAYS called pop......(as in: "Faygo Red Pop"......which, as everybody knows....is Strawberry sodapop.

NOW.....you get "up 'der in NORTER MICHIGAN"....and you might hear the term: "Road pop"......and that's a Pabst blue ribbon for when you're driving !

As far as the sandwich.....I think you're talking about a "Submarine".....(or a "sub" for short).

.................Yes.

Markopolo - September 20, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Arc' ........I seem to be having a problem keeping my bead-width consistent.

I'm using the same piece of aluminum you played with.

I get the nice "mercury" puddle established, and start moving....forward-stop-dip......forward-stop-dip......forward-stop-dip.

As the piece gets hotter, the puddle starts getting wider.....I ease off on the pedal, then the puddle gets narrower.....I give 'er more pedal, and the puddle starts getting wider again......

Also, my travel speed increases to an unacceptable rate, to keep up with the "ever-widening puddle...........

ANYWAYS........the finished weld leaves a lot to be desired ! :(

Markopolo - September 20, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
I tried to run a few beads tonight..........

Markopolo - September 20, 2005 12:37 AM (GMT)
Again......I apologize for the lousy pic'.

As soon as I decide what camera I want next, I'll "put this one to sleep" (with a hammer).

arcdawg - September 20, 2005 01:46 AM (GMT)
Marko,

actually you are doing very well. I tend to believe that you have devolped the EYE and now it just boils down to practice.

those welds look good.....what you have to remember is that the first bead you lay on that material is going to apear cold and the last one is going to be way too hot.....(thermal conductivity)

make sure you really clean your material before you weld....get rid of that oxide.......accitone works.

as far as your beads go....you are adding enough rod and seem to be going at a good rate of speed....

you might want to lower your amprage and just take a lil longer to get that mecury look and then once you get that MOVE QUICK....

keep me posted.....

7018 - September 20, 2005 03:52 AM (GMT)
Marko why not try a outside corner to corner weld,Try different welds t joints and awwwww you know!!!

Markopolo - October 14, 2005 01:30 AM (GMT)
Brian.....I've been putting down a little metal.......

I'm ashamed at the results, but you made me promise to keep you updated.......

Marko......

Markopolo - October 14, 2005 01:31 AM (GMT)
.....And........

FatFrank - October 14, 2005 02:39 PM (GMT)
Doesn't look like anything to be ashamed of. I bet the dead bodies won't be able to open the coffin door and get out with weld like that...............and that is what really matters. LOL

arcdawg - October 14, 2005 03:02 PM (GMT)
coming along nicely marko...... I am thinking that I will be going to see my buddy in december......I will be sure to stop by -
