To those who already know what I'm talking about: yes, I've finally come up with an official campaign name - and yes, it is in reference to a certain piece of battle music. Hopefully it will be at least slightly more appropriate than "Refuge", which only applied to the first bit of the campaign.

Everyone else: I'm going to be running a campaign on IRC, using the Final Fantasy RPG system you can find at http://www.returnergames.com/ord/index.php/Main_Page . See http://www.wingedcat.org/rps/ffdiscussion.txt and http://www.wingedcat.org/rps/ffrefuge.txt for background - as far as the PCs would know at the start of the campagin, anyway. (Also listed in there are the custom rules we're using.)

Current confirmed players: Terra(*2), Jeff, Keith, Saiai, Akari.
Where: #ag_lounge on irc.esper.net
When: Starting at 1 PM Eastern/10 AM Pacific on Sundays, and lasting about 3 hours per session.

I may allow one or two more people to join. If you wish to join, there are a few things you should know:

1. YOU MUST SHOW UP CONSISTENTLY! This may seem like a small thing, but we've had too many players simply fail to show up for sessions, leaving the games they're in, in limbo. Not that we play every week (it's likely that we'll take Christmas weekend off, for example), but if you're not going to show up for a given week, give us advance notice (say, by posting in this thread) - preferably at least a week ahead. (If your computer gets fried or you otherwise lose convenient access, there are cybercafes and other places you can log in at, at least long enough to get a message to one of us to pass along. It is that important to us, so it should be that important to you if you want to play with us.) The penalty for failing to show depends on the circumstance, but PC death and being booted from the game is a definite possibility. Note that this is a long term commitment: the campaign is intended to last for more than a year of real (our) time (as opposed to in-game time) - so if, for example, you're coming here through a college's network and you're going to be completely without Internet access when you go home for the summer, don't apply (although if that is your situation, you really should look into what it would take to get 'Net access at home, just on general principles: there's less and less excuse not to have it these days).

2. I prefer role playing, not roll playing - although there will be a fair amount of dice-rolling combat. (Part of the reason I'm using this system is to force me to be less combat-lite than I usually run things.) The cooler you can make the description of something, the more likely you are to get positive modifiers to whatever dice rolls are involved - within limits. Conversely, I frown on 1st-level god PCs - which is another part of the reason I'm using this system (it's been through lots of playtesting from people trying to do just that - I was one of the playtesters, so I know quite a few of the tricks people tried). If you really want to play diety-equivalents, have patience - the campaign is designed to (hopefully) take the PCs up through about 64th level (which is the main reason the game will probably take more than a year), at which point the PCs will be That Powerful. I've selected the custom rules based in part on whether I feel they are balanced; if you want other custom rules (say, from the ORD section), you can ask, but don't be surprised if I say no. And definitely don't think you can get away with equipping starting PCs with Artifact or Unique weapons (besides my say-so, there is simply no mechanism for doing so within the rules for this reason).

If you're still reading/haven't been scared away yet, read the three links above. PM me with a character concept to apply. You don't absolutely need race, class, or subjob - I can help you pick those out if you want, based on your concept, though they would help - but I do need to know who and what your character is, cares about, fears, and so forth.

Yay! Finally! I think everyone should post in here for a basic background for their characters so that people can have an idea of what kind of skills and personalities we already have in the group.

Name: Ahiru "Mallard"
A/S/L: 17-18/Female/From the forests between Forestburg and Mountainsburg
Job + Abilities: Druid/Dancer: Can transform into different animals and draw on special abilities based on the animal's nature and abilities. Can use dances that harm enemies with status effects or damage.
Brief Background: Ahiru is actually a duck turned into a human - explaining her animal affinity and penchant for transformations. She had a master that disappeared following some legends and she's trying to find him by becoming human and following the same legends.

I'll bite.

Name: Hector Belmont
A/S/L: Male/19/From a mining town called Shaft
Job+Abilities: White Pirate/Thief. Uses a flail (whips, actually, like Quistis or a Belmont). His White Pirate abilities are based around giving the party (not including him) special powers, like SOS-Protect, +evasion on status effects, that kind of thing). His thief abilities are stealing-related, of course.
Brief Background: He's the leader of a band of young bandits who steal food from caravans and give it to his village. They don't have good farmland and they're too far away from a body of water to fish so they have to import their food and prices are really high. So Hector said "Nay, fucketh that!" and started hijacking food. Also, Saiai's character Pak is one of his minions. Pak's the only one allowed to call him "big brother", too. His ultimate goal is to find a new place for the people of Shaft to live, somewhere they can be self-sufficient.

I don't think we have a dedicated healer. Keith's character is subbing White Mage, and that's about it.

Name: Pak
A/S/L: 15-16 Hume Equiv/Male/Originally from Seaburg, now in Shaft
Job + Abilities: Gambler/Chaos Mage- Uses Luck (and money) to make cool things happen, but doesn't always work. Also has an eclectic collection of spells from White, Black, and Time categories, so he's a good backup caster.
Brief Background: Pak escaped from Seaburg so he could live free and wild! He didn't wanna be stuck as a Pet/Maid/Sexslave! So he fleed and eventually joined up with Hector's Bandit/pirate/whatever clan. He's second-in-command and looks up to Hector as a role model. Oh, yeah. And he crossdresses to avoid being hunted down by Mithra who would take him back to Seaburg- or at least claim him as their mate.

Pak's cute~! Here's a few pictures.

I'll make my limit breaks this week. I have an idea for a level 4 one, at least.

We'll have a character generation session this Sunday at 1 PM Eastern. Anyone who might be interested (and could commit to showing up consistently), but wants to ask some questions before starting on a character (especially, anyone who needs help generating a character - including if you want to be walked through how to make one), feel free to drop by.

If you're looking for that, there's been some in-character yaoi in our other current IRC game. I've already promised Jeff that, assuming his character in EC survives long enough (which is quite likely), said character will have opportunities for carnal relations with vierra (rabbitgirls). (There might be relations between Seffie's and Saiai's characters in this game, but those are likely to take place off-screen.)

There is, of course, more to it, but this won't come up for a few months, and I'd rather not spoil it. wink.gif

Geez, you didn't have to tell everyone. And it's not like I was playing specifically to bang some bunnygirls. I certainly don't expect Hector to get as much or more sex as Lucien did. Yeesh.

I've been playing Final Fantasy for sixteen years. I KNOW WHAT I DOING. Unless I roll really poorly. I've been having awful luck with random number generators lately.

Sorry, sorry, I thought you considered that promise to be public knowledge. (And it will be significant to the plot when it comes up.) I didn't mean to imply that that was the point of the character (even if it is an angle that will become relevant in due time).

As to the "if his char survives" - again, sorry; I tend to think of "how can things possibly go wrong" by training. So, like, I was saying if you quit or change characers or something - and I was saying that I think those are unlikely circumstances. sweatdrop_anim.gif

Ah, sou. I thought you were going to go into Murderous Combat GM Overdrive and try to get your players killed at every opportunity. (It's been known to happen. GMs and players alike have been known to snap and become murderous.) As for the sex thing, it's no big deal. I'm saying that I don't want to sound like some player who's such a nerd that he's like "If there are any girls there, I want to DO them!".

I'd never drop voluntarily, though. Far as I can tell, there's no important events going on this year on Sundays. No weekend birthdays, nothing like that. Christmas Eve is a Sunday, though. Probably won't play then. I mean, who would? If I can get you all together, I'd like SHBESM on the 23rd, but that's up to you guys.

Trust me, when you get to the vierra, it won't be about "I want to do the girls" for long. lilaughfm4.gif

I agree it's likely we'll be taking December 24th off - but we'll confirm that once we get closer to that date.

I will admit, I am uncertain about how much combat is enough combat. On the one hand, I'd like to make the enemies strong enough that you get enough XP that we can move the game along relatively quickly, and to make combat non-boring. On the other hand, I don't want to overwhelm you with unbeatable challenges. (Example: the 99 mows - actually somewhat less - all at once I've been talking about with Saiai, should be beatable by the time you encounter that fight.) For plot reasons, I'd like to get you up to near the end of level 8 by the time you take on the first major boss (though you will be facing sub-bosses before then). Average fights, once you factor in number of monsters per PC and all that, seem to give about 100*level XP per PC, but if I stick to that then that's 5 fights per level, which could drag things out. (A bit under 40 fights before you get to the first major boss. Consider how many sessions that'd take to run, even if we didn't have any RP time between the fights and just made it one series of die rolls after another.) Putting you up against 200*level XP per PC per fight combats would considerably shorten that, but those monsters would seem likely to overpower you (unless I twink or nerf them, for instance giving them immunity to elemental attacks you don't have, and that seems wrong to do).

How about giving us quest exp for accomplishing major goals? It'd reduce the amount of combat needed to level. Or you could throw in...hm...how do I phrase this? Automatic battles. Say we go from point A to point B over a long distance, like from one town to the next. You roll up a chance to get into a fight, then roll a few numbers to calculate HP and MP loss (unless otherwise stated by the players), and then give out exp, money, and items. This way, we get injured so there might be a risk of death if we don't stop at least once and heal up or use a tent or something.
