I thought that was all they did today.

Although, the first deer I had done back in 1966 was not tanned and the three mule deer I did myself back in 1985 were not tanned and I am sure the two heads I am looking at right now, that were shot back in the '50's probably weren't tanned either.

I was watching a TV program last month about a major taxidermy/tanning operation here in michigan

There are also a few self tanning videos on YouTube.

Tanning isn't really a big deal on a thin skinned game like deer or smaller. I've done lots. When you get into something like bear, it's a bugger. If you do tan something yourself, use a product called curatan from VanDyke's. The more work you put into a hide, the softer it will get. As far as having it done professionally, there are many good places you can just salt and a ship the hide to.

What Don wrote just about sums it all up. There are many types of self tanning kits out there. The one he mentioned is good. There are plenty of tanneries all around the country where you can send your hide to be tanned. There were several right here in my county but they have closed due to bad times. If you are planning on using the hide to make something, such as a coat, it will take several. You may be able to make a pair of gloves from one hide, and there are places that will tan and make the gloves or coats for you.
If you plan to do it yourself, remember, the more you work the hide, the softer and more plyable it will be.
