Title: Deer down, me down.
HunterFisher - October 17, 2010 02:37 AM (GMT)
Took a nice doe tonight. Then wound up in hospital, ER. Had mishap unloading xbow. Tell ya'll about it tomorrow. It's, 10:35PM. I just want to get something to eat. And see whats left of the race. 81 laps to go.

I can hardly wait to hear this story.

At least we know you are alright...Because you must have got back home to type this
HunterFisher - October 17, 2010 03:14 PM (GMT)
Got settled in my groundblind by, 5:05pm. At, 5:45 a hen turkey came in and kept me company. It was strange that she was all alone. 6:15 I hear some deer running through the leaves on the ridge behind my blind. 6:50 I begin rounding up my gear and call it a day. Then I gave one last peek out the window before leaving. And there they were. Three does emerging from the hemlocks. I checked my watch, it was, 6:58. I only had, 20 min. left of legal shooting time. They slowly browsed their way to my corn pile. When they got 35 yards away I could make out that they were two does and a fawn. Time was ticking away and the light was fading fast. When they got 30 yards out, wouldn't you know the fawn was the closest and blocking any shots at the does. 7:04 the doe steps around and gives me my shot. I could hardly see her when I put the red-dot on her lungs. I could see that the, Fire-Noc hit home although she did jump the string a bit. Only trouble was, when they ran in three different directions, I couldn't tell which was which. Great, I thought, only a few min. before complete darkness. On a gamble, I set out for the one that went straight away, the other two going left and one right. I had my little two cell, AA batteries. 25 yards past the impac point, I found massive blood against a tree. Yes, I picked the right one to follow. When I came to a blowdown on this old cow path, with the mountainside to the left on a 45* degree angle and straight down on the right, I figured she would be piled up within it. Nope, don't know how she did it, but she wasn't there. It took me over 5 min. to get to the otherside of it. Finally, 30 more yards, and there she was. Now what do I do? My batteries were fading fast and my spares were in my fanny pak, back at the blind. First thing I did was call, Cari, to let her know I would be late coming home. Then I took my xbow back up the trail, 15-20 yards and went back to begin something I dreaded. Getting her out of there. I couldn't gut her because I had no light. And being on, Coumadin, I didn't want to take the chance of cutting myself. There was no one to call to get help. I had killed her, and it was up to me alone, to get her out. Tying my drag rope around her neck, then, half hitching it around her nose, I began my quest to bring her home.
As most of you know, I only have one lung, degenerative dics disease, epilepsy, deepvain thrombosis, and almost, 66 years old. I need my head examined. I had to break the branches in the blowdown to enable me to get her through. By now I felt like the lung I had left was in my throat. I couldn't catch my breath, but still had a ways to go. Little by little, leap frogging my xbow and deer. When I finally reached the pasture, where I could get to my truck, I had to take a moment to, Thank the Lord, for helping me. I used the headlights of the truck to gut the deer. Now to load her up. Covered in blood, exhausted, and still trying to breath, I headed home. Cari, had her old jeans on and was waiting. We went over to the, Judges house and hung the deer for the night. Arriving home, I took my, still cocked, xbow from the truck. Opened my shed door, where my block target is, and was about to fire an arrow in it. I was holding a penlight in my right hand, took off the safety, with my left hand, and fired from the hip, at the target 4 ft. away. ''CRASH''. I was in two much of a hurry. My right hand, holding the little flashlight, was right against the fletching. I pulled the trigger. The string sent the light flying, after it and the string took my right thumb with it. I knew without looking, things weren't good. I ran in the house and hollard for, Cari, to put her jacket back on. I needed a, Doctor. It had torn a deep gash and the skin was just hanging. My hole hand was numb, and already black and blue. The pain in my arm was terrible. The hospital is less than a mile away from us and we were there in no time flat. Thankfully, it wasn't broken, but needed 5 stitches to close up. It was my own fault. Thats what happens when you rush things.
This morning, Cari, and I, skinned the deer, quarterd it up, and it's now on ice. Now to get back to the farm and find my arrow, and, Rage, broadhead. : crossbow
Here is the picture

Good story Kenny
Glad it had a happy ending too. With that hospital trip and all. You do that hospital episode one more time and Cari is going to ground you.
Glad you are OK!

PS. I didn't know you were almost 66 years old. Man! That's old.
AFarCry - October 17, 2010 05:49 PM (GMT)
:Congrats: Congratulations on the kill Kenny! I'm glad your injury wasn't as bad as it could've been. Be careful!! Say, I was talking with a fellow Friday who was telling me about his wheeled deer cart. Said it was effortless to drag a deer...

Are you telling us that you are limping around with one arm in a sling. Recently released from the emergency room of a major hospital and Cari still made you butcher, cut and wrap all that venison all by yourself?

I tell you. It is hard being a man. We just don't get any sympathy, not none.
But least you get chocolate chip cookies and banana bread...I don't even get that
WildBill - October 18, 2010 03:26 AM (GMT)
Congrats on a nice eater. I'm glad your thumb isn't broke.
Bill

Yeah, and I have a, V.A appt. this morning. My coumadin nurse will be very proud of me. :shame on you :dunno:
Chuckgrmi - October 19, 2010 03:07 PM (GMT)
Is she going to pull out the other stitches today? Can't Cari just cut them out with a pair of wire cutters?
Phillip and I really want to go hunting tomorrow.
Anyways. You have a safe trip to the VA and back.

PS. Does Cari have any more banana bread left?
HunterFisher - October 19, 2010 07:36 PM (GMT)
Made it to, Tn. and back safetly. No, still have the stitches, they come out next Tues. As far as huntin' goes, you and, Phillip, have to go it alone this time. I deffinitly have to cut up my deer tomorrow. But if you guys are willing, we can go, Thursday. Just don't tell, Cari. She wants my cut to heal first.
Chuckgrmi - October 19, 2010 09:25 PM (GMT)
The healing powers of a pile of deer guts does wonders for an injury.
HunterFisher - October 22, 2010 07:45 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm off to see the wizard. Gonna give it a try this evening. Still stitched up, but will wear heavy bandage and rubber gloves. Just have to go. It's supposed to drop iinto the 20's tonight. Deer should move. : crossbow

I saw no deer last evening. I guess the moon phase overpowered the cold weather. When I emerged from my blind at, 6:45pm. I could see that big ol' moon shineing in the sky. Time to hunt the, '' T's'', again. Ten til Two. Today, Cari, and I have to help the, Judge, finish getting things in order. He and his wife go back to, Va. this Tuesday. It's a sad time of year for, Cari, and I. We hate to see them leave. There such good people. Oh yeah, so is there dog, Larkin. We took him for a walk yesterday, sure will miss that that hound. Will be looking forward to there return in the spring. :waving
Chuckgrmi - October 23, 2010 05:43 PM (GMT)
So
WE did't get any deer again last night?
What the deal?
How is your hand doing? Has Cari cut those stitches out with the wire cutters yet?

I am going to ask Cari to be my friend on FaceBook. So we can talk behind your back.

ridge - October 26, 2010 02:30 AM (GMT)
Kenny, congratulations on that fine doe! I don't know how you still drag them out of the woods. That is one reason that my wife has given orders that I don't hunt if there isn't someone to help. Now about that crossbow string. . .I worry about doing something like that every time that I am shooting my crossbow. Heal up quick my friend.

Yep, they can be very dangerous contraptions, Ridge. You must respect their power and pay attention to what you're doing at ALL times. I don't blame my xbow, it was my fault. It did snap me to attention though. :whew:
Good thing is the stitches come out today. :D
Leep - October 26, 2010 09:12 PM (GMT)

 The wife and I got a good laugh out of that one, Leep. Oh, by the way, Leep, I found a pamphlet at the doctors office yesterday on, Gout. It's by, Uloric. Have you ever taken that? If you like, I can send you the pamphlet. It has a prescription savings card in it also. The doc took my stitches out and the wound started bleeding, :o ''he had a hard time getting them out.'' Now I've got, ''butterfly stitches. I feel like I'm all thumbs now because I got my other thumb caught in the refridgerator doorhandle lastnight. Cari, had to help me get free of it. :whew:  :dunno:
Leep - October 27, 2010 03:21 PM (GMT)
Dang Kenny..You need to sit back and relax and take it easy for awhile..Let that bad luck walk out the door...
I have seen ads for that medicine..Looks like it is pretty new...I'll wait awhile and make sure it doesn't start killing people first...
Had the hunting clothes laid out on the living room floor, again, but too dang much pain in that miserable foot to put on the boots...Been going on three weeks now..Maybe I'll get better in time to go elk hunting some, sure hope so...
