Title: Ice fishing so far

WildBill - February 24, 2010 04:12 AM (GMT)
I early January we made plans to go to one particular lake then decided to try a lake we always had good luck on. We were after crappie. They weren't in a biting mood. A buddy of mine caught and ended up releasing 4

Then went again last Thursday to the lake we were going to try in January. One tiny Perch for me. Had a couple Northern Pike come in to look a the Aqua-vu camera and look at everyones bait. Friend of mine caught one of the Pike. It weighed a couple of pounds, nothing big. We were targeting Crappie & Walleye, they never showed up.

I want to try another lake either this Thursday or Friday for big Crappie & big Bluegill.

My neighbor helped me down to the lake (and back fortunately). The fresh air was great. His graph said the fish were there but we didn't pull any up. Every time that my friend walked away to stretch or check out someone else's spot, a fish nearly jerked his pole in  . But that was as exciting as it got. We were using minnows and grubs trying to catch crappie, gills, or perch. Saturday my neighbor and his brother in law caught a pike, a nice perch for our lake, and a dozen crappie. Yup another should have been here yesterday story :dunno:

My hunting buddy cousin has been getting some nice perch out of White Lake on the west side of the state over here.

Great to hear from you Bill. I wysh you a lot of luck on your planned upcoming ice fishing trip. I hope you catch a mess of them.

Keep after them, Bill. Another couple weeks and the panfish should get started. Really slow for everybody around here. Riley's been getting small northern but overall it's really quiet.

Yeah looks like I'll be going next week instead of this week.

Yeah I just realized I haven't been hear for a while. Been busy with this & that. Figured I should share my fishing experiences so far.

Have a lot of fun on that trip. Sounds like it will be a good one!

Pike is about all that is biting around here also. Panfish should pickup once it warms up and some of the ice melts off.

After the ice is off for a week or two, I hope to get down to the lake that is down the road. There is a dock for disabled folks and it would be great to wheel my self into a spot and sit in the sun, hopefully catching a meal of specs. Now that's the way to get rid of cabin fever :fishing: .

Sure is Dennis, give it a go and good luck.

Went fishing Monday. Tried a lake I've never ice fished before. Looked at lake map before going. Something didn't look right to me on the lake. I had a feeling we were on the main lake and not in the bay we set out to fish. Looked at map again when we got home. Turned out the road we took had the main lake on our right (where we went) and what we thought was a river flowage on our left turned out to be the bay we intended to fish. We caught nothing in the main lake, and haven't gone back yet to try the bay. Maybe hit the bay Thursday.

40 degrees today with no wind. Went ice fishing on our old standby lake and got sun burnt, actually started sweating. And caught 7 crappies. It was really nice out there. But my face is burning.

It sure has been beautiful weather in the North country. Shouldn't be long now before sunnys get going. Riley tried a different lake last time he went out but he only got one northern. How many lines can you have in Minnesota now? We get three per person so it's always two tip-ups and 1jiggle stick.

Can't beat a March tan and fish too!

WildBill - March 3, 2010 05:21 PM (GMT)
Only 2 lines here in Mn during the winter. They have been trying to change the law so we can use 2 year round.

Well Bill, a bad day fishing still beats any other day around the house.

You got that right. But we still had fresh crappie for supper tonight.

Hitting the ice again tomorrow. A friend has some more off time between jobs so he's coming with. Will be fun.

That's something that I'd like to do someday..I spent a few days on a lake in Canada a few years ago..My friend had a cabin there and a couple boats..Rods..Fished for small lake trout and pike and Walleye..It had very nice sized bass in it which my friend hated cause some planted then there.. I liked Pike better than walleye or lake trout..
I'd really like to do it again.

Maybe up where you guys live someday..

Well no Crappie or Bluegill. The Walleye were kind of biting. But that season closed last weekend, and don't open again til May. I probably won't get out on the ice again this winter. I'm so sunburnt it's going to be a while before I get heeled up.

You're always welcome here, Leep. Over 400 lakes in Burnett County where I live!

Bill, I wonder how long the good ice will last. I think those sunnies will be pretty active by the time your sunburn goes away... :)

Hope your sunburn heals up fast Bill. I'm sure you are already plannning and looking foward to next years season. And who knows? You may still get another chance to get out there.
