Title: Welsh Road Trip - Updated with Accommodation
Description: 29th April - 2nd May 2011

sallyb - January 5, 2011 01:33 PM (GMT)
I need to get properly fit before our holiday to Canada in the summer, as well as riding as doing as much technical riding as possible! Therefore, we are planning a visit to Afan in the spring - probably over the weekend of 29th April - 2nd May. (confirmed)

Would anyone else be interested in joining us? Want an idea of 'serious maybe's' so that I can think about what accomodation would be suitable etc.

So then, who is interested....

Accommodation Details:

Having done some emailing, we are going to stay at Bryn Bettws, the place with the log cabins at the top of 'The Wall'. However, this time we have a choice of accommodation :)

Camping:
Sally and I will be camp(ervan)ing in the tent field. £5 per person per night for tents, £12 per night for campervans (they didn't say per person). Hopefully some of you will choose to join us :)

Cabins:
There is one log cabin currently available, which will sleep 5, (twin bedroom, then a double and single futon in the living room) though I would recommend an airbed as the futons aren't particularly comfy. Self-catering, the cabin is £280 Friday to Monday.

Lodge:
They have a bunkhouse style lodge available as well, rooms are multiple occupancy and you get a breakfast. But there is no self-catering so you would be eating out/joining us in the camping field for meals. £25 per person per night. There is currently a fair amount of availability.

Both cabin and lodge has bike storage. They have a restaurant/bar onsite that do light snacks throughout the day.

If anyone wants the cabin I suggest you post on the forum and get a group of 4 or 5 sorted pronto as its not reserved for us. For all accommodation please contact Bryn Bettws to arrange via the link below as it will be easier than us trying to co-ordinate a group booking. You could mention you are part of a group booking organised by Sally Bush so its easier for them to put you in the same lodge room/camping area.

P.S Apparently they have built a 4x and dirt jump track as well which will please a few :)

ok, here is my serious maybe :)

belugabob - January 5, 2011 01:54 PM (GMT)
Can't do that weekend, as I'm going to be in Devon for a Christening :-(

steveonstumpy - January 5, 2011 03:24 PM (GMT)
I'd be up for that :D

Working the Friday night (29th) would leave after work to ride Saturday morning.

Jake - January 5, 2011 06:44 PM (GMT)
That weekend just happens to be the Dyfi Enduro weekend, and the Dyfi Forest is only a couple of hours down the road from Afan - if you could tear yourselves away from Afan just for the Sunday you'd be rewarded with 50km of some of the most amazing natural & technical trails in Wales

DonnyBoyGlimmerGirl - January 5, 2011 08:19 PM (GMT)
Dyfi enduro site currently says.....

"711 out of a maximum of 650 riders have registered so far"

Me and Jo up for it.

Jim - January 5, 2011 08:37 PM (GMT)
I maybe serious...

alex - January 6, 2011 12:18 AM (GMT)
Im a possible, would probably have to come up friday eve though.

belugabob - January 6, 2011 08:29 AM (GMT)
Alex, that Friday is a bank holiday.

Jake - January 6, 2011 01:00 PM (GMT)
They've still not updated the site from last year, life moves a little more slowly in Aberystwyth - entries for this year's enduro will be starting in the next few weeks, but they will sell out fast!

I'll definatly be up for a bit of riding at Afan on my way up to mid-Wales though

darth vader - January 6, 2011 02:27 PM (GMT)
Expression of interest x 2

Dave le Trek - January 6, 2011 04:55 PM (GMT)
S & O

Count me in for this return visit to the Afan trails, I'll have to arrange a lift with a willing friendly rider, but oh yeaahh...bring it on..

Excellent idea

Chadders - January 6, 2011 07:36 PM (GMT)
Dave - If I do go there will be room on the roof for the Froggy.

Ollie - January 6, 2011 09:10 PM (GMT)
Glad to see there are lots of 'serious maybes!'

Will have a think about accommodation and then update...

Sally.

Gez - January 7, 2011 08:17 AM (GMT)
Unfortunatly I'm away on those dates :( But if things change, I'll join.

Ming the Merciless - January 7, 2011 08:21 AM (GMT)
Man from oncall!

Dave le Trek - January 7, 2011 08:41 AM (GMT)
Cahdders,

That would be great, thank you. I think for this trip I will have to get myself a frog for the bars, but only if zippy comes along too!!!!

This should be another great trip, last year in Afan was amazing.

Jim - January 7, 2011 09:06 AM (GMT)
So, if chadders has zippy, dave has a frog, I think we have some anne summers penis straws left over from when tracie did the parties; I could zip tie one of those to my stiffee?

Dave le Trek - January 7, 2011 09:49 AM (GMT)
Jim,

Sounds interesting, I'm just concerned as to where you would put them on your 'stiffy', without them been too distracting!!!!!

Ollie - January 8, 2011 02:18 PM (GMT)
Ahem. Anyways...

The original post has been updated with an impressive choice of accommodation.

Please post to let us know who has booked what :)

alex - January 8, 2011 02:48 PM (GMT)
just worked out that the 29th is a bank holiday? (love those royals)

So I'm a definite, and I will be camping. Looking forward to it!

Ollie - January 8, 2011 04:56 PM (GMT)
Yep we have a four day weekend :) Depending on weather we may go down a day or two early.

SugarHigh - January 8, 2011 05:28 PM (GMT)
Be asking for holiday monday. I'll be there, bitch in personnel office permitting.

Ollie - January 8, 2011 06:19 PM (GMT)
Nick - that attitude might not assist!

The Friday and Monday are bank holidays - so that might assist you getting the holiday!

Sally.

SugarHigh - January 9, 2011 11:28 AM (GMT)
oh she just hates the paper work, easier to deny a hol. So i overload her with requests and she'll eventually give me one with no problems that she denied at the start of the week ;)

silly woman.

Morrisons don't recognise bank holidays so I can't just have them off like most places. In fact makes it more difficult as they ussualy get booked up early =(

Ollie - January 9, 2011 01:05 PM (GMT)
Update to original post, camping is £5 per person per night, campervans £12 per night (they didn't say per person).

Chadders - January 10, 2011 08:02 AM (GMT)
I might be tempted to chip in for a lodge cabin. I don't have time to organise things though.

Sorry I know that shounds lazy!

Ollie - January 10, 2011 12:49 PM (GMT)
Chads, for the lodge just fire off an email to book a bed. Its only the cabin that would need a group sorting out first.

Chadders - January 10, 2011 01:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah I meant the cabin. Although I do have a nice big tent. The only thing that bothers me is showers and bike security!

Ollie - January 10, 2011 03:04 PM (GMT)
We checked and there is a shower block. Unless you are being a fairy about the weather? ;)

We have always kept our bikes in the car when camping, if your car has deadlocks the bike would be almost impossible to get out, they'd have to smash the windscreen!

SugarHigh - January 10, 2011 05:57 PM (GMT)
Have the Thurs 28th - Mon 1st off =D I'll be there with me tent

timmyb - January 10, 2011 11:46 PM (GMT)
I'm up for this, as is a mate of mine, wanted to ride Afan for a while now. Regards the accommodation how quick are things likely to get booked up?

Ollie - January 11, 2011 08:09 AM (GMT)
The log cabin could go any day, the other four are already booked. (previously we've had three log cabins between us)

The bunkhouse lodge takes 38 max, and when we contacted them a week ago they had 30 beds remaining. However it is a four day weekend so I'd expect the lodge to be fully booked at some point in the close future, I'm sure there are plenty of others planning a trip now summer is a distant reality :)

Not sure on their capacity for the camping, they don't currently give camping details on their website, perhaps as they want to get the lodge running and profitable before advertising the cheaper camping too much. But it is available, we have already booked.

P.S for those giving the Dyfi some thought, its a 2.5hr drive from Bryn Bettws.

darth vader - January 11, 2011 12:30 PM (GMT)
There is camping at the 'drop off cafe ' they do secure bike storage in the evenings ( I preffered to lock the bike in the car though0 showers were ok there as well
But take midge repellant cause there are thousands there :D

Chadders - January 11, 2011 03:25 PM (GMT)
Hmmm I'm thinking with the palace of a tent I have that camping may be an option.

Car has deadlocks and alarm so bikes should be fine. I assume Ollie will bring the dirtworker so I dont have to ming up the inside of my car with Welsh mud!

Dave le Trek - January 11, 2011 03:44 PM (GMT)
Chadders,

If your happy to share your palace tent would I be able to share with you, and by the time wales comes around I will have purchased a 'Dirtworker' of some kind for us to use.

What d'ya think???

DLT

SugarHigh - January 11, 2011 07:59 PM (GMT)
Afan Dirt Park

From what I can see this will be in the woods just above the cabins, literally within a few hundred yards, due to be completed for April.

Ideal for play arounds in the afternoon/evening and looks like some big jumps are being built :D

Ollie - January 11, 2011 08:14 PM (GMT)
Dirtworker will be in attendance :)

Chadders - January 12, 2011 07:44 AM (GMT)
@ DLT - Yes if I'm a definite then of course. It has two seperate bedrooms anyway. I should be able to let you know pretty soon if I'm a definite yes.

Do you know if you've got the 29th off. It's not necessarily a bank holiday for everyone. It all depends on how your contract is written. I'd ike to head up on the Friday and then back on the Sunday.
