Title: Flames of War
Description: Who plays?

Sayers - April 24, 2012 12:23 AM (GMT)
So i have spoken with Bart about starting up this here game.

I used to play: ASSAULT! back in 2000, 1/72nd scale ww2 tanks and infantry, and this seems very similar. I was primarily starting up this post to see who at the store has an army, or armies.

I don't even own the rule book yet, but plan to acquire it and some small vehicles soon.

I have a Soviet infantry battalion (painted) and a Soviet tank battalion (unpainted), but I'm several editions behind and have been considering selling it.

Tekore - April 25, 2012 11:56 AM (GMT)
I'm going to pick up a starter box and get to painting. Should be fun to learn casually.

Zetan - April 25, 2012 07:29 PM (GMT)
On this topic, I thought I should mention that we actually have a lot more of this than it looks like. We only stock boxed sets in the store, but we keep a bunch of blister packs in the back. In the new space, we plan to bring the blisters back out to the store, but until then, anything that shows "in stock" on the website is probably in the back somewhere. Just place an in-store pickup order, or ask the clerk behind the counter (if you're in a rush) and we can dig it out for you.

Shimmergloom - April 26, 2012 02:30 AM (GMT)
I have a soviet army too. I played 3 or 4 games against Steve and Ryan last summer, but wasn't able to get more games together.

I want to play some more, but still need to learn the rules. If anyone wants to play, let me know, just know that I still have to learn and re-learn most of the rules.

Most of my stuff is mid-war with some late war stuff. My understanding is that mid-war is pretty balanced, but late war is not.

Sayers - April 26, 2012 01:44 PM (GMT)
Very good! I plan to play mid-late Americans. I'm looking at a tank company and a parachute infantry company unit-wise. Bart is in the process of collecting mid-late war getmans. I think that this coming Tuesday I will acquire my first box of Sherman's and start assembly and painting.

My plan is to hobby these models at the store, play some tiny 5 tank games and get into the swing of things. I encourage anyone who needs to work on their models or learn/relearn to play to come out on Tuesday nights as I thing this is going to be my new thing, and I am regularly there on Tuesdays.

bbart - April 26, 2012 02:11 PM (GMT)
So I have been mostly focused on terrain, with Dales guru like guidance and help we should have a pretty sick tables worth by the time I am finished. I will keep updated with pictures and such as that goes on. I will likely also paint/terrain in the store on Tuesdays.

I will be doing german panzer division and have so far purchased the panzer IVs and PantherAs platoon, along with a platoon of late war mechanized grenadiers for some hot infantry action.

Currently the plan is just to use the forces book that comes with the rulebook, which appears to be late war, once we get the rules down and have a feel for things we can all determine if we want to shift to a specific book or mid war or whatever.

Rule book 3 pack (Rules, Forces, and Hobby) Sci Fi Link

Not knowing the game at all I suggest we aim for 1500 points at the end, however we could start small games to get learning way before that!

I will also speak to Jennifer to get us our own forum section, although we can hijack this one for now since noone seems to use it.

Very excited about this, this game is going to be a blast for team games (as long as someone else is down to play some nazis!), lets just not take it too seriously and have a good time!

Shimmergloom - April 26, 2012 02:40 PM (GMT)
Yeah, 1500-2000 seems to be the preferred rules size.

The games I have played have just been a few tanks fight to learn some of the rules and about 3 1k games.

I will see if I can convince Steve and Ryan or Ray Ramney to play with us over at scifi sometimes.

bbart - April 26, 2012 08:41 PM (GMT)
I just realized that the 3rd edition of this game just came out last month!

So our timing is perfect, the new forces book is the newest release they have. The link in my previous post is the correct edition and everything btw.

Shimmergloom - April 26, 2012 10:16 PM (GMT)
Yeah, this is why I was avoiding playing more in the fall. I figured there was no reason to completely learn the rules and then have to relearn them in February when the new rules came out.

Also, maybe you guys can talk to Shane and the store about ordering Plastic Soldier Company stuff. It is plastic, great quality and about half of Battlefront's prices. They mostly have German, Russian stuff, but have started Americans and Brits as well.

Here's the link I used before I bought any, to see the reviews. This blog has reviews for lots of different companies. You will find in historicals that there is a ton of choice when it comes to manufacturers.

http://timstanks.blogspot.com/2011/02/plas...m-russians.html

PSC though, puts out lines for 3 different sizes, 15mm, 20mm and 28mm. So you need to be sure of what you are ordering, before you do.

The only downside I have about PSC is that they are in high demand and are at about Mantic size in terms of manufacturing, so you can sometimes have to wait a month to get your models, because the historical market is much larger overall than the fantasy/sci-fi mini market.

banging,

I just picked up the rule book kit (3 part set with forces, and hobby0 and have ordered my first platoon of shermans!

then i started reading rules and such and this is gonna be really interesting. I like the way it is set up so far, armor, firepower and the antitank rolls. saves look interesting too. Hopefully i will have my tanks fro some modeling/painting fun next tuesday! but will definitely be at the store with my books for some discussion on the rules and what not.

<how to kill a tiger? top armor me thinks.>

Shimmergloom - April 27, 2012 03:51 AM (GMT)
I checked with Steve Mcnamara and he said the old campaign books are still good with the new edition, so I would suggest anyone who wants to play Russians or Germans to check out the Eastern Front book.

I have it and it is great. It is basically the mid-war 'army' book with numerous lists and force charts for not only the Russians vs Germans, but all the German allies and minor axis powers like Finland, Italy, Hungary and Romania. They even have russian horse cavalry company charts for the truly adventurous.

It's also basically the book you want if you want to run Russian Infantry hordes or German Grenadier companies, which are two of the more popular lists.

Sayers - April 27, 2012 12:26 PM (GMT)
Any suggestion on which forces book to acquire for US paratroopers?

bbart - April 27, 2012 01:06 PM (GMT)
Just keep in mind that to play everyone has to use forces from the same book.

Or is it just the same period (E/M/L)?, someone correct me if I am wrong about that.

I had wondered that myself. The rule book is very clear about everything needing to be from the same period, but i don't recall seeing any thing about specific 'intelligence breifings'.

Im still gonna start out with an tank company, just planning my expansion :)

Shimmergloom - April 27, 2012 02:59 PM (GMT)
It's same period, not same book.

Otherwise russians and americans could never really fight each other in mid-war.

And if you played Japan, you would never be able to play vs germans for instance.

So what you do, is agree to a points level and war period. Early, Mid-war, Late war.

So I could play my mid-war Russians from the Eastern Front book vs someone's Mid-war Brits from a North Africa book.

I figure that Fortress Europe is the best late-war book for americans. Not sure about mid-war. North Africa probably covers mid-war americans as well, but I will ask Steve to be sure. He had told me before that it was just same period and not books, but I will ask him that again to be sure as well.

I think it has to be same period, not same books, otherwise tournaments would be nearly impossible.

I'm pretty sure that bart and I are most interested in late war. The forces book that comes with 3rd ED is late war.

On to the late war!

Thanks for the explanation, Bart correct me if i am wrong about this.

bbart - April 27, 2012 04:54 PM (GMT)
Yah Late war for sure, that way we get to play with all the big toys.

Thanks for the clarification shimmer!

Sayers - April 27, 2012 05:23 PM (GMT)
Seriously tho, I am so excited about a parachute infantry company with bazookas galore, I can't stand it!

Bart, really thank you for bringing this system to light, I haven't been so excited about a new game since the original quake was released.

bbart - April 27, 2012 10:28 PM (GMT)
I put together my first two panzer 4s!

It was an intense labor of love, much smaller and more meticulous than the minatures I am used to, but the result is fantastic. Took took almost 45min per tank, but I picked up some new modelling tricks from the interwebz and I am getting faster. (Lots of little pieces involved in the side armor)

Sayers - May 8, 2012 08:11 PM (GMT)
Just got an email saying my para company is in.. lets see if it is the truth this time.

Oh and I checked out some armies using the 'plastic soldiers kits and they look very nice, cant tell the difference from the interweb as to them and FOW models.

We shall see what they look like in person...

Shimmergloom - May 8, 2012 11:51 PM (GMT)
Are you coming to the fantasy tourney on may 19th?

I am hoping to be there, if I am, I can bring some of my tanks/infantry and you can see first hand.

Tekore - May 9, 2012 12:27 AM (GMT)
Marcus,

I just picked up the beginnings of a USA tank company. I'm interested to see your models on the 19th.

Ben

Shimmergloom - May 9, 2012 03:06 AM (GMT)
Cool. I'll bring some samples of what I have from PSC and Zvezda.

Steve M - September 6, 2012 04:12 PM (GMT)
I'm late to get on this forum - I haven't done much wargaming at all lately, and my only game is Flames of War. Last I talked to shimmergloom, I have still played more games than some of you follks but I am nowhere near expert! My games still require quite a bit of flipping through the rulebook... I definitely recommend just getting out there and playing, even if they are small games. Hopefully I can get out to Durham to play this fall - I am looking to up my wargaming hours considerably.

Hope to see more of you all in the next few months!

Shimmergloom - September 7, 2012 07:08 PM (GMT)
considering I have only the most basic understanding of air support and really don't understand how to do the artillery phase, you are an expert.

bbart - September 9, 2012 10:59 PM (GMT)
Hi Steve!

Its nice to see another FOW player. As I am sure you can tell, things are rather quiet at the moment, but hopefully we'll get more active in the near future.

Although I am mostly painting at the moment, I am up for a FOW game as long as my schedule allows (so far I have a german armored company together at around 1500 pts, and I am working on an infantry company at ~1000pts). Just post up here and I'll be sure to get back to you.

Bart
