Title: May Tournament
Description: May 19th

Zetan - April 16, 2012 03:31 PM (GMT)
May 19th, 2,500 points, 3 rounds, 2.5 hours per round, starting at 11:00 AM. There will be a 1-hour break between the first and second rounds. Entry fee will be $10 (due at the door, no need to pay ahead of time), and prizes will be based on participation.

There will be scenarios of some sort. As always, expect silliness, but I'll do my best to keep them from ruining the game. I'll provide further details when I come up with them. Haven't decided on a theme yet... Empire will have been out for almost a month by then, but maybe we'll use them anyway?

Scoring will work as follows:

0 points for a loss
1 point (for each player) for a draw (less than 100 points difference and neither side wiped out)
2 points for a normal victory
3 points for a crushing victory (twice as many victory points as enemy)

(It's worth noting that you must achieve normal victory before you can get a crushing victory... so if one person gets 25 VP and the other gets 50, it's still a draw, despite getting twice as many VP as the enemy.)

Tie-breakers will be first based on direct competition (so if you won against anyone you're tied with, you are ranked ahead of them), then based on how your opponents did (and so how challenging your particular line-up was).

No named characters are allowed at this tournament. This includes any character that the fluff implies there is just one of, even if they don't technically have a "name." For instance, the Skaven character "Vermin Lord" is allowed, since the fluff refers to him in the plaural, but the Daemons of Chaos character "The Changeling" is not allowed, since the fluff only talks about him in the singular. If you have a question about whether a character counts or not, ask before sending your list.

The version of Power Scroll from the main rulebook is not allowed. However, we will allow the version of Power Scroll presented in White Dwarf 379, the August 2011 issue.

Lists will be required to be submitted ahead of time! You must send your army list to me by 9AM on Friday, May 18th. Please either PM your list to me (Zetan) on the forums or email it to shane@scifigenre.com and not to any other email address. The only acceptable formats are plain text (copied into the PM/email or as a .txt file) or a .doc, .xls, or .pdf file. Do not send me a .xlsx file, a .ppt file, or any other kind of file.

If we get an odd number of people, the person who currently has the lowest score (and hasn't had one yet) will get a bye, which is worth the average score of their other two games. If there is a tie for lowest score (as there will always be in the first round) among multiple people who haven't gotten it, the person who sent me their list last out of those who tied will get the bye. This means that if we have an odd number of people, and you sent your list last, you will get the first round bye. So get those lists to me asap!

List submission is required in order to allow me time to look over everyone's lists and make sure they're legal. This is your pre-registration, in a manner of speaking, though entry fee will not be due until the day of the tournament. It is okay to submit a list then not show up, but it is not okay to show up without having submitted a list by the deadline, so if you're not sure whether you'll make it, submit your list just in case.

This will be a closed-list tournament. You must give all the details of models on the table (what they are and what they're equipped with, what sort of command they have, etc) and are required to share the unit's stats. You do not, however, have to tell your opponent about any models or other details not on the table. This includes fanatics, assassins, magic items, and anything else I haven't thought of. If a unit's stats or rules are changed by a magic item and your opponent asks about them, tell them what the stats/rules would be without the item. Spells must still be rolled publicly, since there's no practical way to do it otherwise. If you have any question about when you have to tell your opponent about something (start of the game, when it's first used, etc) please ask me before the tournament.

Items that produce ongoing effects (such as Frenzy, Stubborn, and stat increases) need not be revealed until those effects take place (such as being close enough to need to measure for a forced charge, taking a break test, and attacking). There was some debate about this last tournament, particularly with frenzy, so to clear that up, the way we're playing it now is to have an item causing Frenzy revealed as soon as there's any question in your mind about whether they're in charge range. Reveal it right before you measure this.

As always, unpainted (and even some proxied) models are acceptable. We encourage painting, but do not require it. It is important to note that, especially in the case of anything that's not 100% WYSIWYG, you must tell your opponent what a unit is when you deploy it, including non-magical equipment.

At any point during the tournament, if you have a question about an opponent's list, you should bring that question to the TO (me). Please be polite about it, and be polite when your opponent does it. It is not to be treated as rude when an opponent asks the TO if you really have a magic item you just revealed or anything of that nature. They're not saying you're cheating, and acting defensive like they just accused you of it only makes you look guilty. Likewise, you should not feel bad to ask the TO about an opponent's list; they could be making an innocent mistake that simply needs correcting. Make questions brief and simple and there won't be any significant delay to the game. Example:
"I use a dispell scroll."
"That's your fourth one, right?"
"Yup."
"Mind if I check with the TO about that real quick?"
"Of course not, go right ahead."
"Shane, does he have at least four dispell scrolls on his list?"
"Let me see... yup, he does."
"Cool.. thanks! Okay, so my spell is dispelled..."
Simple, right? I know there's potential for a lot of awkwardness and/or drama with anything like this, but if we all just be polite and civil about it, it should go well.

Please post any questions, comments or suggestions here. Remember to submit your lists before the deadline. Thank you!

I think there's something about rolling dice randomly, muttering something, then removing fist fulls of models from the table... yours and theirs.

Tekore - May 18, 2012 02:05 PM (GMT)
I will most likely be completely befuddled at the prospect of having a shooting phase for the first time in two and a half years.

bbart - May 18, 2012 02:38 PM (GMT)
I will have to proxy some demonettes, but I got my deamons together and I am looking forward to it!

The shooting phase is not all its cracked up to be.

Ask Collins about our game, and me fleeing from every charge just because I could!

Hmmm, I've been doing something wrong then. I'm only removing my own models.
