Title: Avacyn Restored Card Discussion

Killjoy - April 10, 2012 01:55 PM (GMT)
Temporal Mastery has its own thread, but I am always interested in varying opinions on all of the cards as they are "spoiled". Figured I'd put up a thread where we could do that fairly easily (in a utopian world).

Killjoy - April 10, 2012 02:15 PM (GMT)
For myself, I would like to elicit responses on one of today's spoiled cards, Craterhoof Behemoth. At a whopping 8 mana, it is certainly expensive for a 5/5 that may only be a 6/6 trampler w/ haste the turn it comes into play. However, when I first saw it I thought it could make an interesting "one of" finisher in some of the Wolf Run variants or a mono-green monster mash. I'm not the best deck technician, so am interested in what you guys think about that.

Angel of Jubilation hates New Phyrexia, and she doesn't even know it exists!

Other non-black creatures you control get +1/+1.
Players cannot pay life or sacrifice creatures to cast spells or activate abilities.

EDIT: Craterhoof seems like it's an amusing top end in a Pod deck, assuming you have a 7-drop you wouldn't mind losing (probably not Elesh Norn, but I think I could live without Rune-Scarred Demon).

deejaynicko - April 10, 2012 02:38 PM (GMT)
I am excited for the Moonfolk planeswalker, regardless of how bad or good it is.

I noticed that as well. Perhaps Karn should come to Innistrad and borrow a few of Avacyn's followers.

Also, I was wondering about Craterhoof in Pod, but was leaning against it as most versions do run Elesh Norn as the 7 drop and you wouldn't want to pod it away.

I personally am excited about the blink Angel and the big Behemoth, at least insofar as my addiction to EDH is concerned. I also can't get over Griselbrand: he's going to be my General in the mono-black concoction I've been developing for a while.

In turns of constructed play, I want to use Temporal Mastery in High Tide as a way to get the functionality of Explore or Retraced Image while also getting an Untap step and some added functionality. Does anyone know how Meditate's Skip a Turn and Temporal Mastery's Take an Extra Turn effect each other?

The RC already has Griselbrand firmly On Watch. I doubt they'll do anything any time soon, but be aware that he might be banned some time in the future (Yawg's Bargain is, after all).

Bass - April 10, 2012 05:40 PM (GMT)
I know, I know. He's super good. But he could always be someone else, and I'd like to play with him for at least a little while.

I admit this looks a bit clunky but I'll be damned if Delver or Spirits isn't going to try to find a way to use this. As a huge fan of artifacts (former archaeology student), I look at this and Grand Architect and dream wonderful dreams.

This might actually be my favorite previewed so far (along with Cloudshift). I think W/B's toolset just got a lot better. Anyone else salivating at the chance of getting multiple uses out of things like Morkrut Banshees? Value! Or better yet, Blade Splicers!

Think bigger on that second one. Think "Undying creature that has already died and had a counter put on it." HEY LOOK, no more counter. it comes back AGAIN :(

also, thankfully the angel put into play doesn't appear to come into play tapped and attacking. though Geist of St Traft just got stupid dumb. Yea, i'm gonna attack and put not one but 2 angels on the battlefield. One of them is hitting you in the face, the other is sitting there waiting for you to try to hit me back....

You can't abuse it. They'll effectively cancel out, no matter the order. The "skip your next turn" doesn't take effect until your next turn would actually happen. You can't skip a future turn, and then take two in a row.

EDIT: Restoration Angel & Cloudshift are awesome, because I love Flicker effects, and Angel of Jubilation appeals to my Melvin side.

I'm rather torn on these. I think the PT is going showcase some fantastic U/W decks and I can empathize both with the joy that some players are feeling as each of these cards are revealed and the resigned horror that the opponents of Delver must be feeling.

eh, i wish it had haste....
then it hits for 4 no matter what (but probably only once)

in standard, its probably bad
in legacy, its maybe better, possibly out of the board against control matchups?
more support to just play chalice on 1?

see, if it had haste, then its maindeck playable in Mono Red Burn in Legacy...

Vyolynce - April 11, 2012 06:13 PM (GMT)
Pretty sure they wouldn't print a 4/3 haste for R without an actual drawback. Like he hits you for 8 or something.

Killjoy - April 11, 2012 06:42 PM (GMT)
Don't slot it as a creature perhaps and consider it a 4 burn for 1 red spell and if it hits board and does damage then bonus.

Marcus N. - April 11, 2012 07:55 PM (GMT)
I like Killjoy's perspective on this. Either he'll eat a blocker or get in for 4 on turn 2 or he burns them for 4. Looks pretty good to me and just fantastic for limited.

However, I wonder if AVR is going to have some spectacular Red cards because I think it might be the weakest color out of Innistrad Block.

A 4/3 in Legacy is actually hard to deal on the ground with in the turns where burn decks are meaningful, unless you have Tarmogoyf or a real fast Maverick start that you didn't disrupt.

testing32 - April 12, 2012 02:17 AM (GMT)
There is real talk on the sneak and show boards of Griselbrand replacing progen.

Idea is that he is much much better when sneaked into play. You sneak him then pay 7 life then sneak in Emrakul.

Marcus N. - April 12, 2012 05:47 PM (GMT)
What do you guys think of teaming up Tamiyo with Grand Architect? Architect can ramp up mana and Tamiyo will let you draw a ton of cards off of it.

testing32 - April 12, 2012 06:39 PM (GMT)
This is looking like a very strong set. It seems like power creep is picking up steam.

rloutlaw - April 12, 2012 08:06 PM (GMT)
The set has a lot of build-around cards, but it is interesting that the creep is picking up in spells and not just creatures. This is a significant deviation from the creep seen since Ravnica.

I like Tamiyo as a Standard card a whole lot.

Gerdef - April 12, 2012 09:06 PM (GMT)
I don't see anything power creepy other than the omnipresent fatty creep.

The Devil guy is a bit power creepy, but he's not that great.

Zac - April 12, 2012 09:33 PM (GMT)
Power creep?? Really?? Dude

Vyolynce - April 13, 2012 03:10 AM (GMT)
So you'd rather the game not evolve at all in nearly a decade. Check.

rloutlaw - April 13, 2012 03:25 AM (GMT)
Terese Nielsen's artwork on Descendant's Path is super sick. I'm really glad they let some deviation from the normal style guidelines for that one. It's awesome.

Bass - April 13, 2012 03:44 AM (GMT)
Very Guru-esque. I'm a fan.

rloutlaw - April 17, 2012 05:19 PM (GMT)
So this new Cavern of Souls card looks like a very fun and interactive card for the standard format. I can't wait to name 'Giant' or as it comes into play and have exciting matches of Magic with my opponent.

Some of the preorder prices are real crazy for card in this set. I've only speculated on Personal Tutors and am avoiding AVR preorders as much as possible except for a set of grossly underpriced Desolate Lighthouses (my favorite card of the set along with Tamiyo).

edit: Cavern of Souls found a way to make Stompy decks even worse. R&D had their work cut out for them to achieve that goal.

Bass - April 17, 2012 06:06 PM (GMT)
Wizards of the Coast: Making Control Very, Very Hard to Play, but Not Impossible, since Cawblade Was Banned.

(Oh, and there are no good combo decks in Standard. v.v')

rloutlaw - April 17, 2012 06:21 PM (GMT)
There's no free wins playing control in standard, that's for sure. One of the big draws of playing ramp decks is that sometimes you just get to crush midrange decks and anything that's too cute for its own good.

Bass - April 17, 2012 06:31 PM (GMT)

testing32 - April 18, 2012 10:49 AM (GMT)
Ulvenwald Tracker seems really good.

Zac - April 18, 2012 07:15 PM (GMT)
you guys seen Cavern of Souls?

Card Type: Land
Card Text: As Cavern of Souls enters the battlefield, choose a creature type.
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast a creature spell of the chosen type. That spell can't be countered.

This thing is insane. Not only is it going to see competitive play (humans, zombies, maybe angels soon?), its going to be a staple for a HUGE amount of casual decks and Commander.

Going for $22.49 right now on SCG. Anyone else think this could be the next $100 card? I mean it makes about 99.99% of tribal decks better.

It's a regular are, not mythic -- so no. That price is going to drop as more and more of the set is opened, and since it's a stand-alone that means 3x the number of packs opened per limited event than a normal 3rd set.

You make a good point. I just haven't seen a card that can fit so nicely into so many decks before. It just seems like an auto-include in all tribal decks.

I still think it will hit $50 within the next month. We shall see...

whoa, don't get me wrong I think it's a good card but I think it will be worth what Fauna Shaman was.

hereirule - April 22, 2012 06:06 PM (GMT)
@Zac: I would dump them once they hit thirty! they are not gonna go up much further, because they are rare. Tribal decks are being held in check in legacy by RUG's burn. They standard control decks focus on removal as well. (UB is not exactly the strongest deck right now...) The only way this land will shoot up in value is because people call giants and standard will degenerate into Titan.format (also relatively short-lived phenomenon because they are not expected to return in m13).

Jamming two into Maverick calling human also seems good but that's not gonna make it a 50 dollar card. Watch SCG prizes closely over thenext week and compare that to the prices on tcg and magiccardmarket.eu (a tcg-esque platform that dominates market-prices in Europe: everyone can offer their cards for sale thus it is very supply demand based).

Hope you did not make a mistake with your purchase, good luck!
