Title: April tournament

Dr_Pain - February 13, 2012 07:56 PM (GMT)
I'm pleased to inform everyone that the next Warhammer 40k tournament has been scheduled. Here are the details:

Date: April 21, 2012
Time: 10:30 AM
Entry: $10 per person
Rounds: 3
Round time: 2 1/2 hours
Points: 1850 per person; each army constructed according to its codex's force organization chart.

Prize support will be gift certificates, with the number and values based on attendance. Each participant will receive 1 token at the start of the event. If a participant wins a game he receives an additional 2 tokens, a tie means the person and his opponent each receive 1 extra token. The missions use the battlepoints system, which means that the two participants with the most battlepoints at the end of the tournament will each receive a gift card. Then I will collect tokens from the remaining players and place them in my dice bag. A token will be drawn and another gift card awarded to the lucky winner of the “raffle”.

Lists are required to be submitted ahead of time. You must send your army list to me by 9:00 AM on Thursday, April 19, 2012. Please either private message your list to me (Dr_Pain) on the forums or email it to triangledale@yahoo.com. Acceptable formats are plain text (copied into the PM/email or as a .txt file) or a .doc, .xls, or .pdf file. Do not send me a .xlsx file, a .ppt file, or any other kind of file. List submission is required so that I may review everyone's lists and make sure they're legal. This is your pre-registration, though the entry fee will not be due until the day of the tournament. It is acceptable to submit a list then not show up, but it is not acceptable to show up without having submitted a list by the deadline. Therefore, if you're not sure whether you'll attend, submit your list just in case.

Additionally, don't forget the painting prize is for the best painted troop unit. The unit must be from the codex you are using, but does not have to be the exact unit you are fielding.

So, is anybody actually coming? There's been, like, zero chatter...

Karl-Christian - April 18, 2012 03:25 AM (GMT)
I will be there. For once I'm not on the other side of the world, or traveling to parts unknown on family vacations.

Mord - April 18, 2012 03:29 AM (GMT)
I'll definitely be there, with what though.....yet to be decided.

Bust out the super secret Codex: Dark Tau.

bbart - April 18, 2012 04:12 AM (GMT)
I'm also going to be there, having a tough time deciding between marines or eldar.

Lochaber - April 18, 2012 04:25 AM (GMT)
I'm not going to be able to make it, as graduation/show constraints have left me zero time in which to assemble and paint up my Dark Eldar. I might swing by the store on Saturday to say hey, but I won't be playing. :(

That is a shame, I was looking forward to meeting you on the field of battle, still I'll look for you on Saturday.

P.S. I have a bit of a surprise up my sleeve ;)

Dr_Pain - April 18, 2012 12:41 PM (GMT)
Russ N., Curtis F., Todd C., and the Brothers Morabito have also preregistered. Why Mr. Sayers and Mr. Geer have not submitted lists is beyond me, but I suspect they just want to build suspense.

The Colonel - April 18, 2012 03:12 PM (GMT)
I was deciding how much of a dick I wanted to be this weekend. List is now in.

WYSIWYG - April 18, 2012 04:30 PM (GMT)
Hey Dale, Did you get my list? I've been having a problem with my email account so I just want to double check.

Dr_Pain - April 18, 2012 04:45 PM (GMT)
Chris, I have your list. Your brother, however, is another matter entirely.

Darklord - April 18, 2012 05:07 PM (GMT)
After a long time away, I have returned to the tourney scene. See you all there folks!

I hope you got my list Dale: I was having some issues and tried to send it three times. It looked like it took the last time.

Dr_Pain - April 18, 2012 05:12 PM (GMT)
Doug, your list made it. By my latest count we're up to 16 players!

Hey Dale,

Did you get my list?

Dr_Pain - April 19, 2012 03:08 PM (GMT)
Indeed I did receive your list, Karl-Christian, and those of about 20 others. It looks like we're going to have a full store on Saturday. I had a question about a couple of lists, so I'm not posting specifics just yet. The Imperium is well represented with a smattering of xenos scum to keep things interesting (Necrons, Tau, Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, Eldar).

Stay tuned for updates about the worst enemy all of you will face.... THE MISSIONS! :o

Lulz, this comment reminds me of what I tell James and others all the time about who their real enemies are at tournaments, however your slightly off Dale.

-Chris' List of the 4 Primary Tournament Challenges and Perils-

1. Tournament Organizer
The most dangerous enemy a player will ever face is not his opponent across the board, but the TO himself. His ability to choose the mission you play, the table you play it on and its corresponding terrain, and who you play the mission against, grant him an amazing amount of power in deciding your fate. Also, unlike the other three perils on this list he cannot be dealt with directly or avoided, you can't go through the TO or around him, he simply must be accepted.

2. The Mission
The mission is the second most dangerous enemy and an immutable fact of your tournament life, no matter who you play or what the board looks like, if your list can't handle the mission you've lost before you ever rolled a die. Understanding how to best win a mission with your list is crucial to success in a competitive setting.

3. The Board
The board is the third challenge you will face, this one is slightly less devious than the previous two as with good play you can mitigate the effects of even a bad terrain setup. However, in the end the board is the board, and cannot be changed, only dealt with.

4. The Opposing Player
Your opponent is the least threatening of the four challenges as he can be outmaneuvered, out played, and can be subject to luck, unlike the other three. However, the caveat here being that while the other three must first be accepted and dealt with, it is the opponent who in the end must be overcome. However, the opposing player can become the ultimate peril by conquering the first three.

Karl-Christian - April 19, 2012 08:20 PM (GMT)
I think "Dice" should be in there somewhere.

Under number 4 I address dice with the phrase "and can be subject to luck", as you are also an opposing player this line refers to bad luck on you or your opponents part. The reason I don't go into dice is because that's a facet of the basic game mechanics and something you have to deal with whether playing casually or competitively. Though I do understand that even the best laid plans can fall victim to bad dice rolls.

I'll be there. Taking a bus all night to get there on time, so watch out for my CSM....Cranky Sleepless Marines that is.

Your loyalty is commendable, Warrior of Chaos. The Ruinous Powers must be pleased with your dedication. Horus would be proud... 'cept he's, ya know, dead.

Seriously though, good to hear you're coming on the Magic Bus again. Ride On Through The Night like Def Leppard, yo! B)

About a third of the armies aren't MEQ, which is unusual for us.

Karl-Christian - April 20, 2012 01:21 PM (GMT)
Additionally. with this good of a turnout, there might not be room for those card playing guys.

Thanks a lot, Dale. Had a good time.

Dr_Pain - April 22, 2012 03:20 PM (GMT)
Thanks to all the players who attended yesterday. I hope you had a fun time and will participate in future events.

Congratulations to Ed T. for winning first place, Justin S. for taking home second place, Charlie G. and Kurt R. tied for third, and Chris D. was the recipient of the door prize. Curt F. won the best painted troop prize with his Grey Knights.

The next SFG 40K tournament will be in late June and the painting competition is for best painted heavy support.

Karl-Christian - April 22, 2012 07:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks again Dale! It was a blast and I really liked the missions.
