Event Description:

Gather your allies. The ultimate battle awaits.

You are counted among the elite spellcasters of the Multiverse—the Planeswalkers. Some are friends and others are foes. All wield terrifying magic and command armies of creatures torn from the endless planes of reality. No matter what challenge faces you, you have the strategies and the weapons necessary to succeed.

The 2012 Core Set features a new evergreen keyword mechanic, a returning keyword mechanic, and a new piece of rules terminology—but "new" is a relative term here, as you'll see all of them in Duels, and one of them in Magic: The Gathering Commander, before they appear in the Core Set.

Some keywords, like infect or exalted, show up in a set or a block but by default aren't in subsequent sets. Other keywords, like flying and lifelink, are considered "evergreen" parts of the game. They can appear in any set, and most sets feature all of the evergreen keywords on at least a few cards.

Magic 2012 brings us a new evergreen keyword: hexproof!

A creature with hexproof can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control, but you can target it with spells and abilities normally.

In addition to evergreen keywords, the Magic 2012 Core Set features the bloodthirst keyword. "Bloodthirst N" means "If an opponent was dealt damage this turn, this creature enters the battlefield with N +1/+1 counters on it."
