Title: Legendary Battles?

PerpetualGM - December 17, 2008 05:02 AM (GMT)
Has anyone either played or looked at the Warhammer Fantasy Legendary Battles rules? It's like 40k "Apocalypse" for WHFB and the rules are available for free on GW's website. Now that we have people approaching 2k or more points with their WHFB armies, would anyone be interested in doing something like that? It'll probably take a while to organize and some planning, but it could be fun to have a huge battle sometime! Who (if anyone) would be up for it?

bbart - December 17, 2008 05:17 AM (GMT)
Although I am very unpainted I would be very interested

Royazu - December 17, 2008 06:51 PM (GMT)
I'm interested kyle. I'd be can help you set it up / write up a story, if you want me to.

Tekore - December 17, 2008 08:31 PM (GMT)
I could be up for it.

Ben

bluetony - December 17, 2008 09:23 PM (GMT)
I'm in!

PerpetualGM - December 18, 2008 04:00 AM (GMT)
Cool, it's good to see so many are interested or at least open to the idea! Does anyone have any idea about what point totals they could likely contribute and what army they would like to play? I can put about 4k worth of Lizardmen on the table if I field almost everything that I have. If I can convince Toh to play, he should be able to do 3k points worth of High Elves fairly easily, more if he ever gets around to buying/assembling a dragon or two.

Given the holiday season, how about we try to shoot for some time in January or February?

bbart - December 18, 2008 06:52 AM (GMT)
I just got some orcs and goblins, so I can do them or dwarves at 2kish, anytime is fine with me although my availability varies, If we can do it sometime before end of my break (jan7th) that would be fantastic, although I realize that may be a bit soon to be realistic.

Tekore - December 18, 2008 03:31 PM (GMT)
Around 6000 points of Bretonnians.

Ben

Zetan - December 18, 2008 04:51 PM (GMT)
I'd be interested, too.. I think I'm up to somewhere in the 2500 range, though I haven't calculated for sure. As for a date, I'm hoping to work out some January dates for stuff with Zack today (including the New Years tournament I'm planning) so I'll see what's free after that. Obviously we don't need the whole store, even if there's a bunch of us, but I wouldn't want it to conflict with something that is taking up the whole store.

Agreed. If we get enough people, we can even try splitting it into different tables if necessary and do two Legendary-sized battles.

Zetan - December 18, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
Okay! January has been populated with events.

It looks like, if a Saturday is going to work, it has to be January 3rd. This might be a little tight for some people, but if enough people are interested and can make it that day, it could work. I know I can make it. Any other Saturdays have events that take up too much space to share it with even one LB table.

Otherwise, none of the Sundays in January have events yet. I'd personally prefer the 4th or 18th, and might not be able to make the 11th or 25th, but if more people can make it one of those days, that's totally fine.

This won't be an official store event with prize support or anything, unless people really want it to be. I can still put it on the calendar once we decide on a date, but nobody will be "running" it.

So, when is everyone free?

Tekore - December 18, 2008 07:32 PM (GMT)
January 3rd would also be best for me. I would prefer a friendly game for this, not prizes or such, as you say.

Ben

PerpetualGM - December 18, 2008 09:59 PM (GMT)
A friendly game sounds fine with me. I should be able to do Jan. 3rd, but I won't be available until 1200 that day. Depending on how big the battle(s) turn out to be and whether we end up splitting it up into two different battles, I'd guess that a 5k+ game will take at least 5 hours. Add more for larger games. The Legendary Battle rules say you can use either a turn limit or a time limit, so which would people prefer?

Royazu - December 18, 2008 10:05 PM (GMT)
january third.. Ill check my schedule. Im flying back to california sometime over break; Im not too sure when, though. cant commit - Ill get back to you. I can pull about 3500, and can pump it even more if I take Lord Kroak. so, 5000.

Hey, if you lose one of the five 2nd Generation Slann left in the world or the mummified remains of the mighty Lord Kroak, we'll all reserve the right to mock you mercilessly. ;)

The rules download recommends that we play an objective based game, since standard scoring can apparently be a hassle with Legendary Battles. There are supposed to be 5 objectives and they each score at the end of the turn, I think. That sounds considerably easier than trying to figure out points at the end of the game.

blacksword21 - December 19, 2008 02:02 AM (GMT)
January 3rd would be good for me as I will still be on break then; this sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Royazu - December 19, 2008 03:29 AM (GMT)
hey Kyle; I checked my schedule a few minutes ago and it looks like I fly into RDU at 6am on sunday the fourth - a day after the battle. If youre still scheduling this thing.. I leave on the 27th. however, if you cant get me in, thats fine; though I was looking forward to a 10,000pt lizardmen force.

Actually, all of the scheduling is up to Shane. The only Saturday available seems to be on the 3rd. He did mention several open Sundays, but I doubt we could finish a Legendary Battles game in the time that the store is open on a Sunday. If we do decide on a Sunday, we'd have to play to a time limit I would think.

It's up to everyone else. I can do pretty much any day, so long as I have some advance notice. 10k points of Lizardy DOOM would be very awesome! Of course, there's nothing saying that this would be the last Legendary Battles game either. Maybe it's only the first...

Nah, don't leave it up to me.. I just tossed some dates out there that you could do it. You guys should feel free to organize it yourselves. :) I'm honestly a little wiped-out on scheduling and all that, which is part of why I pushed this in the direction of unofficial and all that. I'm not the organizer on this one, just the store co-ordinater.

PerpetualGM - December 22, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
So far, the 3rd looks to be the best time for most of us at this point. As to the possible armies, we've got:

Lizardmen (3-4K)
Dwarfs (2k+)
Bretonnians (6k)
Daemons of Chaos (?)
High Elves (?)
Ogre Kingdoms (?)

Alternates that some of you may have, IIRC:

Orcs & Goblins (?)
Skaven (?)

Did I miss anything?

bluetony - December 22, 2008 04:23 PM (GMT)
Sorry - took a while for me to re-read the thread.

I can probably push to 2250, maybe 2500 at a stretch with my Ogres. As this is after Christmas I may have some Skaven (most likely 500 points ish) to add to the total stuff, but don't count on that!

Tom

Shriker - December 22, 2008 04:23 PM (GMT)
well i'd come in with my skaven... but i'm likly to not hit above 2k till spring.

blacksword21 - December 22, 2008 11:32 PM (GMT)
I will definitely be there with my Dwarfs; I know I can do 2250 to maybe 2500 pts for them and If the bbart wanted to combine armies we could probably easily have 5000pts of Dwarfs there.

PerpetualGM - December 23, 2008 03:08 AM (GMT)
Alright, from the looks of things so far, the "sides" we have are:

Bretonnians, Dwarfs and High Elves (all are Common Allies, so they can flee through each other and can be taken as Allied units in another army.)

VS

Lizardmen (Ugh!), Daemons of Chaos and Ogre Kingdoms (Ogre Kingdoms count as Common Allies with everyone and the Daemons of Chaos and Lizardmen are Occasional Allies according to the Alliance chart.*)

Any objections to that match-up? If not, what point value do we want to set for each side? I'm pretty sure that the "Good" guys can whip up 10k points (Ben has over half of that in Brets!). I think I might be able to squeeze out 5k with my Lizardmen if I load up on options and maybe proxy a few things, which leaves Tom and Shane to do 2.5k apiece if they are able. If not, we can get Desperation points if we're the lower point value side, which give us free re-rolls, dispels and have a few other uses. If you would like to play Shriker, you can build a force up to whatever point value you have and we can tack it on to the "Evil" side if you'd like.

*The Lizardmen Alliance chart is kinda messed up, since it lists us as Occasional Allies to EVERYONE, even the Skaven, who are a complete abomination in the eyes of the Lizardmen, since they were in no way planned by the Old Ones. I'm pretty sure I can whip up some excuse why I'm teaming up with my two most hated enemies (Daemons and Clan Pestilens). The "Plans of the Old Ones" is a big umbrella. ;)

Beartrax - December 23, 2008 04:30 AM (GMT)
I can bring 2k of Dwarfs or VC so I can bolster any side that needs it really.

Tekore - December 23, 2008 01:50 PM (GMT)
I can also, and will, try to bring 5k and 7k variants on my Bretonnians, to best fit as needed. Looking forward to it.

Ben

Zetan - December 23, 2008 06:51 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (PerpetualGM @ Dec 22 2008, 10:08 PM)
... which leaves Tom and Shane to do 2.5k apiece if they are able.

I'm 95% certain I can do that, and if not, I can buy another box sometime before the 3rd. So count me in at 2.5k.

PerpetualGM - December 28, 2008 06:39 AM (GMT)
Alright, from what I gather these are the point totals that we're looking at:

Bretonnians: 4000
Dwarfs: 4000 (2 players here, I think)
High Elves: 2000

Total: 10,000

Lizardmen: 4000
Daemons of Chaos: 2000
Ogre Kingdoms: 2000
Vampire Counts: 2000

Total: 10,000

If someone wants to bring more or less, post here so we can try to see what we can work out to keep things as balanced as possible. Otherwise, feel free to start designing your lists and contacting anyone else on your "side" to coordinate if you like.

With 6 players, we'll be playing on a board 3x the size of a normal WHFB board, IIRC.

bluetony - December 28, 2008 04:47 PM (GMT)
Hey Kyle

Thanks for setting things up. Just so we are clear, could you mention the names of the people playing on each side? I'm pretty sure who is who, but just wanted to make certain!

Thanks

Tom

PerpetualGM - December 28, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
Sure thing!

Bretonnians: Tekore (Ben)
Dwarfs: bbart (Bart) & blacksword 21 (David)
High Elves: Haggard (Toh)

Lizardmen: Perpetual GM (Kyle)
Daemons of Chaos: Zetan (Shane)
Ogre Kingdoms: bluetony (Tom)
Vampire Counts: beartrax (Bjorn)

If I screwed up someone's name, I apologize. I have a terrible memory when it comes to names. Once again, if anyone would like to play at a higher or lower point value, then feel free to post here or contact the others in your "faction". I know that I certainly wouldn't mind giving up or gaining points if someone had to play a higher or lower point value or wanted to squeeze in a few more points. I chose the point values that I did so that everyone would be able to bring at least one Lord choice to the table.

-Kyle

Beartrax - December 28, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
Would it be possible for someone to bring in the legendary rules on Tuesday?

PerpetualGM - December 29, 2008 01:58 AM (GMT)
I'll probably be out of town this Tuesday, but the rules are available as a free download on GW's website. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link, but you can find it under:

Warhammer>Warhammer Articles>Gaming>Legendary Battles

I'm not sure if that helps, but someone else can bring a copy on Tuesday if it doesn't.

Tekore - December 29, 2008 09:30 PM (GMT)
If anyone would like to bring larger armies on the Lizard/Daemon/Ogre side (or less on my side) feel free, I plan on bringing a variety of sizes for 4,000 to 6,000 so as to fill any gaps.

Ben

Beartrax - December 29, 2008 10:05 PM (GMT)
Thanks Kyle. I would like to inform the dwarf payers that they can use some of my artillery if the want. I have a cannon and organ gun.

Yeah, each side gets two Massed Batteries and/or Monstrous Hordes according to the Legendary Battles rules. Unfortunately, I don't have any extra Stegadons. :(

If anyone on my side has anything that they want to use our Massed Batteries/Monstrous Horde slots for, feel free to post here or PM me to let me know. If I decide to field a crap-load of Stegadons, I'll have to proxy them unfortunately. I'll probably be buying one, maybe two more when the new plastic models come out but that isn't until Feb.

Also, I'll be out of town until Thursday night, but hopefully I'll get a chance to check my e-mails and/or this board. I'm figuring that we should meet at 11 AM on Saturday to start set-up and deployment. Hopefully, we'll be done with that by Noon, and can start then. I have no idea how long this will take, but does anyone have a time they must be done by?

Haggard - December 30, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
If my erstwhile allies can swing some points my way so that I'm fielding a 3000 point High Elf force, that would be grand. The second lord slot will help us all out since it looks like I'll be working the magic phase for us, and at 3K I can bring all four of my great eagle minis to the table without invoking the massed batteries/monsters rule.

blacksword21 - December 31, 2008 05:27 AM (GMT)
Ok I have come up with the list that I will be bringing on Saturday I think. Normally I don't like to do a overly shooty army with Dwarfs but I have decided that in this case to make a rather shooty list in order to support my allies here; I just want to know what constitutes the massed battery rule, right now I have: an Organ Gun, Bolt Thrower, Grudge Thrower, Gyrocopter, and Anvil of Doom(thought this could come in handy in such a massive game).

Tekore - December 31, 2008 05:13 PM (GMT)
I'm hoping for some last minute Dark Elf and Skaven additions, and I'll bring enough so that no matter what, we can balance the sides. I look at this as an excuse to play with as many cool toys as possible.

Tekore

bbart - December 31, 2008 06:50 PM (GMT)
I hate to do this just 3 days before, but I won't be able to make it, something came up last minute and I'll have to go into work.

Fortunataly Toh wanted some extra points, and I'm sure the other dwarf and brettonians should easily fill any gap I leave behind.

I apologize for any trouble, my job does this sometimes =(

Beartrax - January 1, 2009 12:37 AM (GMT)
@ David: Follow the instructions Kyle gave me to find the rules, You are also free to use basically any of my Dwarf stuff you want since Bart can't make it. I have:
40 Warrior/Longbeards
20 Thunderers
10 Slayers
10 Miners
1 Organ Gun
1 Cannon
1 Anvil
1 Hero

@ Everybody:
My two friends who were there on Tuesday are also coming, they have 2000 Orcs & Goblins and 2000 Tomb Kings
