Title: Resident EVil - PC Version - FIXED
Description: I FINALLY FIXED THIS GAME =D - Updated

Diego9000 - March 4, 2012 07:29 PM (GMT)
=================================
I FIXED THIS GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
=================================

Seriously !!!!!! I DID IT!!! YEEEIIII =D

-NO FREEZE ON THE DINNING ROOM TALKING WITH BARRY!!!
-I managed to cap the frames to the game's original speed (15FPS)
-I managed to remove the Screen Tearing issues

>>> Anyone who downloaded this yesterday (03/12/2012), download again, i updated (03/13/2012) <<<

What i did?!
If you keep reading this post you will see i talked about injecting dll, and glide wrappers/directx wrappers, i could manage to find a DDRAW Wrapper project, fix it and compile and it worked as a miracle, i swear i felt shivers and a fuzzy feeling on my belly when the game didnt froze =D

So here is the fruits of my research: Download
Just drop on the folder where is teh Resident Evil executable and play it!!!

I did what no one could do since Windows XP was made more than 10 years ago ... ;w; im so damn happy and proud of myself ... enjoy my friends
The Recommended section still applies except by the slowdown programs ;)

=================================
I FIXED THIS GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
=================================

Recommended:
-Run as administrator (ResidentEvil.exe)
-Compatibility mode set to Win95 or Win98
-Install my tool that easily helps in config the game, is way more intuitive than the one which comes with the game ;) Download - Updated at 03-19-2012
-Set a joystick to be compatible with old games in the Control Panel>Joysticks. It most probably will work.
-Make use of Slowdown programs such as: Mo'Slo, CpuKiller, others

-Corrected a few issues some people were complaining about the config tool, the input tab is 50% done, you can already save your choices for
keyboard inputs, joystick inputs not done yet, so it does nothing, and still does not automatically loads your key choices when start program, im looking into all of that, have pacience

Patchs:
-Resident Evil (USA) - NoCD 1
-Resident Evil (USA) - NoCD 2
-Resident Evil (EUR) v1.00c Patch
-Resident Evil Voodoo2 Patch

Voodoo2 Patch:
-Has no sound in the whole game
-Cutscenes runs extremely fast
-Gameplay runs extremely fast
-No possible to use Glide Wrapper (In theory should be possible, but is not, nglide forums states that it still uses D3D despite the mode selected)
-Freezes at Dining room when you talk with Barry after killed the first zombie
-Not all joysticks are detected

3DFX Options
-Cant be executed, just hangs in a black screen after showing off the 3DFX logo
-No possible to use Glide Wrapper (In theory should be possible, but is not, nglide forums states that it still uses D3D despite the mode selected)

Rendition Options - seems to work out fine on modern pcs, but still has many bugs like:
-Freezes at Dining room when you talk with Barry after killed the first zombie
-Freezes on some doors if you try to skip them
-Has no sound in the whole game sometimes
-Can't be run windowed
-Cutscenes are so fast that the player sometimes get off screen or walk in circles waiting the audio finish.
-Not all joysticks are detected

Matrox worked fine on my PC, but is same as Rendition modes, all problems are same.

Run in Software Mode (Video or System Memory) works ok
-Has sounds
-Can be run windowed
-Cutscenes arent played (too) fast
-Gameplay isnt (too) fast
-Loses all effects like "Fading colors" "Transparency" etc
-Very low resolution despite being already in 640x480 (compared to the other display modes, 3DFX, Rendittion and Matrox)
-Your video color needs to be set to 16Bit color (High Color) or else it will not work
-Not all joysticks are detected

Does not work:
-Dosbox, the game wasnt made for run in Dos systems
-Dos4gW or any other Dos Extender, the game wasnt made to be in run in Dos systems
-All glide wrappers out there, although it has display options for 3DFX and Voodoo2, it is unable to run then due the fact it still uses D3D instead of (old) Opengl //3DFX is kind father of opengl, is all same stuff basicaly
-SwiftShader, it does not support games made with DirectX older than DirectX 8
-3D Analyzer --Not sure if really works or not--
-I used a program called "LordPE" to check out the ResidentEvil.exe, i discovered that it uses the ddraw.dll as main video driver, which that, we can deduce 2 things: -Glide wrappers will never work, but ddraw wrappers maybe, im trying to compile a Ddraw to d3d7 wrapper, link, maybe it works, but im not very good with C++ programming

Ideas of what could work - Needs to be fully researched by someone who has skill, since in this part, I'm just giving ideas, and i just know a bit about a few of those stuff bellow
-Hex edit the ResidentEvil.exe and figure a way to fix it
-Inject codes into the ResidentEvil.exe file or ResidentEvil.exe process using Dlls - pretty much like FXAA Tool and SMAA Tool
-Make a patch using Microsoft Compatibility Toolkit
-Translate the old D3D commands to newer ones
-A tool similar to SciTech GLDirect, which translates the Opengl commands to D3D, allowing computers without support of Opengl to play Opengl games, but in this case, would be the reverse process
-DirectX Tweaker Tool, may work, Im looking into that now
-VMWare ThinApp, it solves lots problems, but still some bugs, but you can play always with sound, dont need a CD or modify your computer registry, since it uses a sandbox. I Really recommend people try out this.

If you do know something about it any of those ideas, help us :)

Hello people, i'm here with a proposal of discuss ways to make it work on actual systems..
i know... there is emulation and we can emulate the PSX version, the Nintendo DS version, etc.. i own all those versions,
and is not my focus on this topic.

I see no where in internet, tips or anything else that might help people to make it work on actual systems such as Win7.

So, i propose that everyone who knows something about it running it on actual systems to post here what they did *-*
actually, i'm doing a new tool for properly configure it and run it, and i'm searching ways to fix the executable, but i lack skills
on hex edition :/

So, i ask anyone who knows something about it, share what you know and lets help each other to make this game
see the shine of day again on PCs *-*b

Resident Evil 1 HAD a Full official PC Release.

http://www.gamespot.com/resident-evil/platform/pc/

However...there is 1 screaming flaw with it, the game has no FPS cap. So..the game runs as fast as your PC can handle it, and with modern PC's, the game runs WAYYY to fast.

Lol, the first version of RE was for PC XD

But it had just support for Rendition, Matrox and 3DFX boards, voodoo 2 later with a patch, which is very faulty.

I though about Glide wrappers because 3DFX and Voodoo2 ..but it uses D3D commands in anyway, so it doesnt work u.u

Rendition works out of box but is how you said, run fast as hell ....
and normally it has no sound and those tools to cap velocity out there *moslo, turbo, xpeed* are pretty much useless nowdays ...

Aye.
I personally emulate RE1 with the Ps1 Emulator (ePSXe V1.6.0) and I have certain plugins I use for Graphics & audio, and I have the game working 100% :) I took all those settings and burned them onto a disc so I never lost them, this way I am able to play the original 1996 RE1 at any time :D

i understand u.u but you will never know what is the taste of the Uzi(ingram) and the Rifle(minimi) that there is
exclusive for the PC version

...but the focus of this post is not emulation of the other versions fro the PC, is the PC version, fixed *^*

Indeed, Indeed
Those weapons look cool, and PC version has the cool ability of skipping doors..which makes the game much shorter/faster :P It also doesn't have that "Stop" between background images like the PS1 verison. (Same with RE2,RE3 PC)

my resident evil 1 works (edit) worked in win95 compatibility mode on win7 but freezes so i looked further into it and started to use 3D Analyzer.

Worked a charm, forgot the settings though was sometime last year, don't have the game anymore i deleted it for the GC remake.

Maybe you can gain some knowlege from trying this out, i dunno... hope it helps. :>

sorry for interupting this convo again with another suggestion... have you tried using dosbox.

I have a lot of retro games that will only run in dosbox.

might also be worth looking into :>

No, Dosbox wont work with it, the RE1 executable is 32 bits u.u
which means that has no internal Dos commands to execute

shockz - March 4, 2012 09:04 PM (GMT)
sorry about dosbox plan, im such a noob lols.

http://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/tools/3d_analyze/download/

you will; find 3d Anylizer here and there should be links in the main program to the help section.

I want to go back to pc directors cut edition because the remake lags too much on ma pc with the emulator.

I know a bit about both *-*
see the DOS4G that you mentioned here, will not work since RE1 Exe is 32 bits and has no use of a dos commands, you know that cause it lacks the file: dos4gw.exe but it is really awesome in other games that makes use of it, i recommend anyone to download it *-*

and the Compatibility tool im stil trying to figure it out everything about it, but seems promising :)

Ok diablo 1 is roughly just as old, i uploaded the opalGL files used to run the game.

You might also need this resident evil voodoo patch below.

You will need these

Im now out of ideas buddy, hope you can get things working properly.

These files was my last option on a very old RPG game i had and they worked so it cant hurt to try. :>

ahhh , i "forgot" to put that up there (im doing a tool that helps chosing this mode and the others, will finish it soon)

Officialy, the game doesnt shows this option to chose, but it has it, you just need to edit the registry.

to do it, go to start menu, then run, and execute: regedit
then you go opening the small folders until you reach the final path:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Capcom\Resident Evil
or
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Capcom\Resident Evil

Now see the "Display Driver" ?
Double click it and just use 5 or 7

Click ok, and is done :)

Im just not sure if 5 is video memory or is 7 video memory :/

Hey did you try a program called CPU Killer? That helped me with the Fast Cutscenes in the game. That was the most common problem with RE1 PC Version played on newer PCs. Maybe that program can work for you as well.

I'm still waiting on Votc's response. Because I experienced a similar problem that he had. Hope he responds back soon. B)

I checked all my source code and noticed a few 'bad code' on loading the config...
sometimes it was crashing when starting up cause wasnt finding the RE1 config entries on Windows registry
