Character Name: Ciaran Averyl

Nickname: He doesn't do nicknames.

Rank: Sailor, 1st Lieutenant

Class: Middle-Upper

Age: 25

Physical Description:
Due to some curse of genetics, Ciaran is already greying, though the discoloured hairs do not stand out too much against his natural sandy brown shade. It is cut short, as befits a man in the military. Fortunately, his other features are not nearly so aged. His face, lined only slightly, is considered by most to be at least mildly handsome. Set above high, pronounced cheekbones, his eyes are a very pretty blue-green colour, like tropical waters. The nose he was born with was straight, but after a heated fight, it has taken on a very slight bend to the left where it was broken. He still hasn't quite forgiven the ship surgeon. His lips are normally twisted in one of two positions: a customary scowl or a haughty smirk.

Despite many hours at sea, his skin has not taken on the rough texture associated with sailors. Of course, he is well-muscled, and tall to boot. He is decidedly more graceful aboard a ship, where he doesn't have that much space to keep track of. After a long voyage, it takes a while for him to get off his sea legs. He prefers the seas for one more reason: sailors don't care how well he is dressed. He is quite uncomfortable in formal clothes, especially those blasted cravats.

Personality:
Ciaran is a little short of temper, and swears like a... well, a sailor. He is one, after all. He derives pleasure from peevishly pointing out the deficiencies of others. Not the most endearing character trait perhaps, but at least nobody can call him unobservant. He actually doesn't get into that many fights, the nose-breaking incident was a bad day for him.

He's horribly awkward when it comes to polite conversation however. Weather? He'll look outside and tell you what he sees. Politics? He hasn't got a clue. Flirting? He's either totally oblivious or looking for any excuse to change the subject. Hopeless, really, which is probably the reason why his father even let him join the Royal Navy.

Despite his less than sterling social skills, Ciaran has a lot of friends. He's fairly well-known among the lesser lordlings as well as among the barkeepers situated within walking distance of the Docks. Interesting company to keep, but it's probably because most people learn pretty quickly not to take him too seriously. This unlikely charisma also comes in handy when he's issuing commands to the crew. He's not the 1st Lieutenant for nothing, after all.

History:
His father is yet another wealthy noble, deeply involved in politics. His mother hails from Ireland and insists that all her children be given Irish names. Accordingly, his older brother and younger sister are named Aidan and Fenelia. Aidan is a mere two years older than Ciaran, and is thankfully much more suited for inheriting the estate. Fenelia is currently 21, and of late, Ciaran has been rather overprotective of his little sister.

Ciaran's hopelessness as a member of polite society was apparent from early on. At the tender young age of 4, after the birth of his sister, the family took a trip to his mother's dear Ireland. They went by ship. Ciaran fell in love. As with all forbidden romances, his father put up a strong opposition, appalled that his son wanted to become a common sailor. But after years of exemplary behaviour (for Ciaran, anyway...) and support from Lady Averyl, the boy was grudgingly allowed to enlist in the Navy.

A little while back, the ship he was serving on decided to get struck by lightning in a bad storm. Fortunately, nobody was harmed (it was in port, and everyone had retreated indoors long beforehand. What a military ship was doing in a trade port is a mystery), but the ship is now undergoing repairs, which may take a while. Ciaran is very anxious to get back, but for the time being, he's stuck in the city.

Other info:
Ciaran is good friends with Ephraim Lasfert. They met in childhood during one of those parties where the entire family comes along. Gabrielle and Fenelia hit it off rather well, so the boys were left in a bit of an awkward silence until they realized that they had a shared perplexity when it came to sisters. They go hunting together occasionally, but not often, as Ciaran is anything but adept at riding. He's a great shot, though.

He is the 1st Lieutenant under Captain Hargrave, on the Lady Formosa. He is a good sailor and a competent officer, so he is probably due for a promotion in a few years.
