Title: Pokemon: World Tour RPG

Oshron - September 21, 2010 10:25 PM (GMT)
Hello, all! Emperor Oshron here! I'd like to announce that I've gotten ideas for a possible Pokemon RPG to be started and managed right here at Rplegacy. It is still in its very earliest stages of development, but the basic idea is that participants play as Pokemon trainers and work alone or together to become the best that there is! Participants will all start off with the choice of any one of the starter Pokemon in any of the Pokemon generations released in English thus far (so the currently Japan-only Generation V is off-limits). There will be no real object to this RP, but individual story arcs can still come up.

The primary difference in this RP is that the Pokemon distribution and the regions are not at all random or fictional. Instead, the RP will take place in our world itself, and the distribution of various Pokemon will depend entirely upon where rough analogues to them in real life live. For example, the Pokemon Charmander, based on the old European legend of salamanders being associated with fire, will be native to the regions where fire salamanders can be found, and thus primarily in Europe (though a player can still acquire one very early on as a starter Pokemon). Other, more unorthodox Pokemon that do not have a basis on a real animal, such as many of the "inorganic" Pokemon like rock-, electric-, and fire-types, will instead be found in fitting environments (ex: Geodude in mountains, Electabuzz in powerplants, and Magmar in active volcanoes).

However, I can't design this RPG alone. That's where you, the forum-goer, come in. Through collaboration, cooperation, and planning, I believe we can make a truly great Pokemon RPG!

Are you with me?

Mike55 - September 21, 2010 10:29 PM (GMT)
Sure but didn't Ty_Ae make one.

Tails of Nine - September 21, 2010 10:29 PM (GMT)
Osh it's times like these that make me wish i could hug over the internet.

I am so in!

Sure but didn't Ty_Ae make one.

may have, but not one here :P this RP is gonna be on a HUGE scale, though. thats part of teh advantage of it :D at the moment, im working out at least part of where all the pokemon would live--thatll be the most complicated part of making the designs--and i think we should focus on that first and later come up with designs for gyms and whatnot. but ive already decided that the pokemon league itself will be--where else?--japan :P

Tails of Nine - September 21, 2010 10:40 PM (GMT)
If you need any help with pokemon locations I'll be happy to help.

But just a question will the world be the same as it is now just with pokemon?

Oshron - September 21, 2010 10:56 PM (GMT)
there'd probably be some aesthetic changes--like no politics, just because thats not the purpose of the rp--but otherwise mostly the same. one change could possibly be the inclusion of actual weapons, like maybe instead of just constantly using their pokemon, some of the evil Teams will actually carry guns. this is all for aesthetics, though, as i said before. the world will be virtually the same as it is today (but without a specified year, maybe i bit more advanced to go with the whole pokemon thing)

Tails of Nine - September 21, 2010 10:59 PM (GMT)
Makes sense.

Evil teams with guns= awesome.

Oshron - September 21, 2010 11:06 PM (GMT)
yeah, but itd kinda be on kid's show status for gun use: they have them, but they cant really use them (hey, at least its not invisible guns like with 4kids :P), like theyd fire at point blank but always miss. yknow, stormtrooper style :P

Tails of Nine - September 21, 2010 11:07 PM (GMT)
I see.

I'm sure the Pokemon trainer age limit will have to be raised.

Oshron - September 21, 2010 11:19 PM (GMT)
yeah. participants will be encouraged to join at a fictional age, but something along the lines of what their actual age is (i plan for my character to be 17 even though im 20), though the minimum will still be ten. if the character is significantly older than that, there should be a plausible reason as to why.

Tails of Nine - September 21, 2010 11:20 PM (GMT)
Works for me.

How will we get starters? (Or first pokemon)

Oshron - September 21, 2010 11:25 PM (GMT)
same way as in the original games: just go to a local official and receive one. for simplicity, it could simply be stated that the players start off just leaving their town with their pokemon already in hand

Tails of Nine - September 21, 2010 11:27 PM (GMT)
That works for me.

Oshron - September 22, 2010 12:05 AM (GMT)
ive already done a bit of work into pokemon information and locales:

Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur
environment: rainforest
locale: Amazon Basin (because of their plant status and because of the "modern dinosaurs in south america" myth)

Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard
environment: temperate forests; mountains & volcanoes (Charizard only)
locale: continental Europe west of Ukraine (because thats the rough range of fire salamanders); Europe, North Africa, & Russia (Charizard only, because of dragon legends and its flying abilities)

Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise
environment: tropical islands
locale: Pacific Ocean (Blastoise is only found in the Galapagos on land; all of them could be encountered at sea)

Caterpie, Metapod, and Butterfree
environment: forests (all kinds)
locale: North America & Australia

Weedle, Kakuna, & Beedrill
environment & locale: warm regions of East & South Asia and the Americas (Asia: the range of Asian giant hornets; Americas: the range of killer bees)

Pidgey (havent come up with stuff for the rest of the family)
environment & locale: nearly anywhere (based on common pigeons)

Rattata and Raticate
environment & locale: everywhere but antarctica & the arctic circle

Tails of Nine - September 22, 2010 12:09 AM (GMT)
Nice work. Basing their locations on what their based on?

Also need any help with the locations?

Oshron - September 22, 2010 12:46 AM (GMT)
yeah, any help you can provide will be welcome. just jump in with any pokemon you want to help with. i recommend using Bulbapedia for information

Tails of Nine - September 22, 2010 12:47 AM (GMT)
Alright will do I'll start working.

EDIT: Quick question how should legends come into play? (Like where they live what they do ETC)

Oshron - September 22, 2010 01:13 AM (GMT)
im still working out their general functions, but the main idea is that there will be one to a region, and each one would have some significance to the region. for instance, zapdos would probably be in the pacific northwest because of thunderbird legends, mewtwo would probably be in the eastern US (as some kind of supersoldier conspiracy theory), and kyogre would probably be in atlantis. there wouldnt be a legendary pokemon necessarily to every region, but thats the general idea.

Tails of Nine - September 22, 2010 01:17 AM (GMT)
I see I wont touch those just yet then.

Arceus will be in heaven :P

Tails of Nine - September 22, 2010 10:09 PM (GMT)
DPFAR:

I got some kanto poke done.

Spearow,Fearow
Environment: Forest, Mountains* (*Fearow only)
locale: The Americas & Europe

Ekans,Arbok
Environment: Forest; Deserts & Rain forest* (*Arbok only)
locale: Americas & Africa (Due to them being based on Rattlesnakes, Boa’s and Cobra’s)

Pikachu,Raichu
Environment: Forest, Cities
locale: Everywhere (Well their based on mice and Pikachu are portrayed as house pest in a Pokemon manga )

Sandshrew, Sandslash
Environment: Deserts, Mountains
locale: Everywhere but the Antarctica, the arctic circle & jungles

Nidoran(F),Nidorina,Nidoqueen
Environment: Forest, Grasslands
locale: Everywhere but Islands & Arctic (Nidoqueen only found in Africa)

Nidoran(M),Nidorino,Nidoking
Environment: Forest, Grasslands
locale: Everywhere but Islands & Arctic (Nidoking only found in Africa)

Clefairy,Clefable
Environment: Mountains
locale: Russia & Himalayas (Having to do with their in game theory of being from the moon and living in mountains)

Vulpix,Ninetales
Environment: Grasslands, Forest
locale: Japan (Because of their base on the Kitsune legend )

Oddish,Gloom,Vileplume
Environment: Rainforest
locale: The Malay Archipelago, Amazon basin (Because of they are based on Rafflesia arnoldii)

Also I got the Johto starters.

Chikorita,Bayleef,Meganium
Environment: Savannah
locale: Africa (Based on the “Mokele-mbembe” Cryptid)

Cyndaquil,Quilava,Typhlosion
Environment: Forest
locale: Upper North America & Russia (That is the range of wolverines)

Totodile,Croconaw,Feraligatr
Environment: Swamps, Rivers
locale: North America & China (That's are the native habitats of alligators)

Oshron - September 23, 2010 06:06 AM (GMT)
thanks for those. here's what i put down for them by comparison:

Spearow, Fearow
Habitat: nearly anywhere (because of how common sparrows are)
Locale: North America, Europe, & Russia (Fearow is limited to the warmer regions because of their apparent base on cormorants, which dont occur in colder zones)

Ekans, Arbok
Habitat: arid regions
Locale: the warmer regions of the Americas, Africa, and South Asia (because of their basis rattlesnakes and cobras; unlike some of the other ones, i based this directly on what i previously knew and what the two forms most closely resemble, even though rattlesnakes are found in america and not afro-asia and cobras are found in afro-asia and not in america)

Pikachu, Raichu
Environment: forests (but cities wouldnt be out of the question, either; for the most part, im listing what their natural habitats would be except in the case of "inorganic" pokemon like grimer)
Locale: Japan only (just because its the mascot :P though it would be available elsewhere in safari zones)

Sandshrew, Sandslash
Habitat: rainforest, arid regions, caves (because of their basis on armadillos and pangolins)
Locale: Latin America, American South (based on armadillos), East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa (based on pangolins)

Nidoran families
Habitat: tropical regions
Locale: equatorial Africa and America (i decided to bullshit this one because of how common their apparent bases, rabbits and orchids, are in real life. i agree that nidoking and nidoqueen would be most common africa)

Clefairy, Clefable
Habitat & Locale: the Moon :P ill need to look into this a bit more. mountains sound good, maybe they could come from places with lots of stories about fairies?

Vulpix, Ninetales
Habitat: temperate regions
Locale: northern America and Eurasia (wild Ninetales can only be found in Japan, though; Vulpix has a wider range because of the great range of foxes)

Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume
Habitat: temperate and tropical regions
Locale: South & Central Europe (because of their apparent basis on mandrakes), equatorial Africa, Indonesia (Vileplume can only be found in the Congo and Indonesia, teh latter in reference to the stinking lily)

i havent actually done any work on the 2nd generation pokemon yet (trying to cover all of the 1stGen pokemon first), but i have ideas. chikorita and its family i wasnt that sure about, but sub-saharan africa sounds pretty good; im kinda trying to limit each starter to a particular region (at the moment, charmander has western europe, bulbasaur has teh amazon basin, and squirtle has the pacific). however, i think cynadquil and its family would fit better in australia (because of cyndaquil's similarity to the echidna, and the climate there is more fitting of a fire type). putting totodile and its family in china sounds like a pretty good idea, otherwise it could maybe fit into the nile delta

Tails of Nine - September 23, 2010 02:32 PM (GMT)
Alright. I like your better btw :P

Oshron - September 24, 2010 08:19 PM (GMT)
i took the liberty of making a map of the world of the rp. the "countries" arent actually countries; those denote "regions" adminsitered by the pokemon league and determine where certain pokemon can be found. real-world governments still run their respective countries. this regions will be made into threads for the rp itself and will also note which specific regions certain pokemon and landmarks can be found in (for example, the American South thread will note that Mudkip are only found in bayous and the like, and thus not in mountainous or dry areas in the region

Nice work. The structure makes sense to me.

Oshron - September 30, 2010 05:07 PM (GMT)
anyone else have any input here?

Tails of Nine - October 2, 2010 07:36 PM (GMT)
Well one last question. (from me)

Will the gym leaders be from their own nation? or will each country (or area) have it's own national gym leaders?

Oshron - October 2, 2010 09:23 PM (GMT)
theyll be between individual regions, which will have more or fewer gyms depending on how many major cities there are in that region. most regions have 2-4 gyms, while the lowest number is 1 and the highest is 5-6 (Europe has the most, and these will probably be Madrid, Rome, London, Berlin, Paris, and Athens). also, atm, im just filling in leaders from the games and devising that they can be challenged at any time and have 3 different teams that they use (except for giovanni): a beginner team for trainers who have less than 5 badges, an advanced team for trainers who have between 5 and 10 badges, and an expert team for trainers with 10 or more badges.

ive set it up so that players need 16 badges to enter the pokemon league, and at least one badge from every continent (except for antarctica). the only gym leaders that i have down so far, though, are Falkner (Madrid), Giovanni (New York), Misty (San Francisco), Sabrina (Ho Chi Minh City), and Steven (either Munich or Berlin)

Tails of Nine - October 2, 2010 09:26 PM (GMT)
Alright.

I'm here. Just tell me what you need.

Oshron - October 3, 2010 10:43 PM (GMT)
well, really, any ideas are welcome. you could try to help with locales for some species of pokemon if you want, or give ideas as to where gym leaders could be located

Supafly_d00d - November 1, 2010 08:23 PM (GMT)
This sounds like it could be a blast!

Pokemon is always fun, should be interesting

Tails of Nine - November 26, 2010 08:53 PM (GMT)
Hey is this still in the works?

Oshron - November 26, 2010 11:31 PM (GMT)
technically yes, but ive been focusing more on other projects lately. if you all want to keep discussing, feel free to do so and i'll bring all of those suggestions up for consideration. remember, the locales of pokemon should relate to what they are based on, so crossreference with bulbapedia and wikipedia to get ideas (the areas of starter and legendary pokemon have already been decided upon)

if you have ideas for gym leaders--both ones from teh games and ones made specifically for the rp--and where they could be, feel free to give suggestions. as an example, ive decided that koga and erika will be the gym leaders of japan while steven would be a leader in germany

Tails of Nine - November 26, 2010 11:46 PM (GMT)
Alright then. I'll put my brain to work.

Mike55 - December 12, 2010 05:53 PM (GMT)
So any updates on this osh?

Oshron - December 12, 2010 06:48 PM (GMT)
no, none yet. my attention has been devoted elsewhere.

Mike55 - December 12, 2010 06:49 PM (GMT)
