    What is a prudence organization?
An anti-psi or "prudence organization", employs people who are "inertials" to nullify privacy intrusions by telepaths and precogs. Apart from securing their clients' pricacy, they can also be hired to monitor psi activity and track down psis who've used their talent to steal or cheat the law.

    How did Inertials come about?
Inertials are usually the children of Psi. It's a step towards evolution, nature's way of balancing out the advantage of Psis over Norms. But most Psi are not happy with having an Inertial for a child, and consider them 'traitors' to their kind.

Can a Psi ever lose their talent?
Yes. Even though talents are innate, if a psi damages his Supralobe (the part of the brain that controls talents), their talent is nulled. This usually happens in the event of an accident, or if someone were to surgically destroy the Supralobe.

Why is it legal to hire people psychic powers?
Hiring Psi is only supposed to be a preventative measure, usually used by businessmen to keep their corporate trade secrets just that, secret. But of course, it's common for people to cross the legal parameters, hiring Psi for sabotage and espionage.

    What is the Prudence Society?
It is an impartial society established to maintain a balance between hired Psi and Inertials. It is also in charge of making sure that both don't abuse their powers and abide the law.

    What Is Half-Life?
After you die, your ‘protophasons’ of encephalic half-life glimmer within your body, and you are put in suspended animation so your mind can be preserved. People can still talk to you in such a state at the Moratorium. There is one problem: Over time, your protophasons leak away. Each frame of life eats up your half-life and draws your mind toward death.

    What Is Ubik?
Ubik is the "Absolute in an aerosol can!" Created by Ella Runciter and other half-lifers, it is used in the half-life to oppose the force of decomposition. A weapon that can be wielded against those who might try to absorb your half-life. If you feel yourself getting weaker, older (as you age, you're obviously not supposed to feel it), spray yourself with a can of Ubik to restore your world to its right time. “One invisible puff-puff whisk of economically priced Ubik banishes compulsive obsessive fears that the entire world is regressing…”

What happens when you're eaten in half-life?
You die. Completely. You're still in cold-pac, still kept in a vegetative state, but there is no more brain activity. In the world of half-life, people will see you as a crumpled mummy, as if the decay caught up with you and you aged decades in the last hour.

How are you eaten in half-life?
Literally. If a stronger half-lifer decides to drain away your vitality, he will do so by chomping at you. Those who eat their fellow half-lifers attest that if they open their mouths, they can even hear the voices of the last person they ate.

    Where can you get Ubik?
Ubik is available in any drugstore. However, it is only effective in spray can form. Ubik itself is also vulnerable to regression, meaning if it devolves into its obsolete forms such as Elixir (liquid form) or Ubique (salve form), it is useless. Some of original half-lifers who made it can give you a "lifetime's supply of Ubik", which will then be brought to you by Myra Laney when you need it.

    Do all half-lifers need Ubik?
No, only those whose vitality is being threatened by another half-lifer. You can usually tell when you start to feel weak for no reason, and your surroundings start to decay (milk turns sour, walls crumble, etcetera).

Can all half-lifers create entire surroundings?
Yes, especially if you have a good grasp of your situation, meaning you know you're dead and now in half-life (some are in denial). Also, it's the stronger, newer half-lifers who can usually manipulate their surroundings, albeit unconsciously, from memories of their former lives. But every time you create something in half-life, of course it takes its toll on your vitality.
