Peter & Paddy Back At St. Greg's For Radio 1
Posted by icklebelter - 10-12-09 01:39 - 0 comments
Article from the Bolton News, Peter Kay and Paddy McGuinness appeared at St. Greg's at the weekend for a radio one show along with Chris Moyles and Vernon Kay.

"Garlic Bread? Peter Kay would much rather have a pastie"

6:10pm Saturday 10th October 2009

WHEN Peter Kay calls for pasties, the boss of one of Bolton’s best loved bakeries comes running.

Peter and his old pal Paddy McGuinness were at St Gregory’s Club in Farnworth — home of the popular Channel 4 series Phoenix Nights — to take part in Vernon Kay’s show on BBC Radio 1 today.

And when Peter mentioned that a few pasties would go down well, managing director of Carrs Pasties John Carr arrived a few minutes later. Within an hour, enough pasties for the show’s 200-strong audience had arrived.

Peter said: “It was funny to see him walking in to a standing ovation. It was very good of him. I only mentioned it for a laugh — I didn’t think he would turn up!”

Mr Carr said: “I have known his wife and family for a long time. I heard it on the radio so I just sorted it for them.”

Vernon, who grew up in Horwich, said he had wanted to broadcast his weekend show from outside of London for some time, and Bolton seemed the ideal location.

He said: “Originally we were going to do it from the town hall but that seemed a bit formal and then we decided to come to St Gregory’s.

“It’s such an iconic place, thanks to Peter. It was the perfect venue. It worked even better than we thought it would.

“People in Bolton are great. They have such great personalities, with such a great sense of humour. The audience here today really made it.”

Peter said: “It is really nice to be back at the club. When Vernon called and said he was doing this I couldn’t not come.

“It’s been great. I keep forgetting that we are on air and that people from the top of Scotland to the bottom of Cornwall are listening to the show. It is madness.”

Among the other celebrities to join Vernon on the stage at St Gregory’s for the show were Bolton Wanderers player Kevin Davies, Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, and Craig Gazey, Ryan Thomas and Michelle Keegan from Coronation Street.

Band the Duffy Brothers helped the stars keep people entertained.

Vernon’s family and friends also turned out for the occasion, including his daughter Phoebe and brother Steven who is a teacher at SS Osmond and Andrew’s Primary School in Breightmet.

Steven had given out tickets for the show in Bolton town centre.

Matt Cumberbatch, aged 30, of Junction Road, Deane, was third in line for the tickets, and went to the show with 11 of his friends.

He said: “It is absolutely brilliant. We’re so pleased we were able to come down. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Peter Kay, Vernon Kay and Paddy McGuinness all here together. It is like a celebrity safari! We’ve taken so many pictures.”

Dozens of fans who had not got tickets waited outside the Church Street club, including residents from Farnworth Care Home across the road, hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous Boltonians.

Paul Sandland, owner of the club, said he was delighted the show had gone so well.

He said: “It has been really good. It is really nice of them to think of coming back here.

“I think it was the perfect show in the perfect venue. How many times do you see all those famous faces on one stage. You wouldn’t even get that on the TV!”

Peter To Retire From Stand Up?
Posted by Ian - 03-19-09 12:50 - 5 comments
Peter Kay has sparked rumours he is retiring from stand-up comedy after claiming he has run out of jokes.

The hit comedian - whose Mum Wants A Bungalow tour was a huge success and is still a hit on DVD - has been focusing on his acting in TV shows Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere and most recently as female alter-ego Geraldine in Britain's Got The Pop Factor.

Peter, 35, made a surprise appearance on-stage at the end of friend Jason Manford's show in Salford recently, where the Daily Express reports he told the audience: "I've been far too busy mincing about dressed as a woman to come up with any new material.
He added: "I came up with one new joke recently about naan bread and it was about my nan and bread! But it's not very funny. That's why I don't do gigs any more."

Peter - who earned £4.5 million last year and recently appeared in musical The Producers in Manchester and Cardiff - hasn't toured as a stand-up comedian for over three years.
He is currently writing a follow up to his best selling memoirs The Sound Of laughter.
