Jake looked down at the dollar and seventy-five cents in his hand and wondered how he was going to get through the week. Clenching the money in his fist, he shoved the little amount he hand back into his pocket and continued on his long walk through the Nightside. He’d been in the Nightside for little under three weeks and since the whole alien incident it seemed that he could go without eating for two days before having to eat and one meal would suffice. As for sleep it seemed just an hour or two of inactivity was all he needed each day.

The sounds of sin and laughter filled night air as Jake continued walking on. Now that he thought about it, it seemed all he did now was walk on and he began to wonder what he would do with his…life? Unlife? Second life? The knowledge that he’d died and come back still bugged him but not as much as it had a few weeks prior.

Taking a moment to get his bearings, which since he didn’t actually have any idea as to where he was didn’t amount to much, he set his sights on the tallest building in view. He pulled an ‘Idiots Guide to the Nightside’ pamphlet from his back pocket which he’d picked up from stand selling tee-shirts. It folded out to show a very simple map and only labeled main roads and areas, but the map had been more then helpful and had earned its place in his pocket.

Looking back and the tower then back several blocks, Jake took a wild guess as to the tower ahead to being Time Tower Square. ‘Look, Ma. I’m heading to Time Square,’ he said mockingly to himself before feeling a pang of guilt in his chest. He wondered how his family was doing for probably the hundredth time and was now beyond a doubt that he wasn’t going to be leaving the Nightside for some time. Right now though he had other things to worry about and needed to get his priorities straight. Logic time.

He needed food and shelter. For food and shelter he needed money. For money he needed a job.

Jake stopped in front of a large store window and looked at his reflection. Grey dead eyes and a half-cocked smile stared back. He somewhat doubted that anyone would hire him dressed in a ragged tee-shirt and the lab coat he was wearing, but then again this was the Nightside and miracles could happen here or so he had heard. He drew his fingers through his stringy black hair and blew out a deep sigh.

A miracle, that’s what he needed. Or maybe just a new shirt. He took a moment to rethink his position. Maybe he was thinking to negatively. With a clean shirt and his hair tied back, he might just be able to pull off getting a job. The lab coat he had didn’t have and insignia and maybe he could pull off looking like a young lab tech. He sighed again and continued his long walk. Too many maybes and not enough money. Unless…

Jake fixed the tower as his general destination and began casting his eyes around in search of a store. A surplus clothes or Goodwill would do just fine. He had about another day before he would get hungrey again and a dollar seventy-five to buy a tee-shirt with, and the dollar seventy-five was the money he was going to use to turn his life around.

He suddenly stumbled over something and bit back a colorful phrase. Jake turned to see what he had tripped on and realized that it hadn’t been a what but a who.

"Oooof!" Joe proclaimed as a figure tumbled on top of him. He flailed around and eventually managed to push the figure off him. "Watch where your goin' ya foo'!" He squinted as he tired to focus through unglassesed eyes and saw the smaller figure who appeared to be looking back at him. "Awww...hey...I'm sorry for yelling like that. I've just been having a bad day, losing my glasses and all..." Joe walked over to the form lying on the ground and helped him to his and proceeded to brush him off. "I've gotten you all dirty, sorry about that." The youth stared at Joe. "Say buddy, help me find my glasses? I'll treat ya to a nice meal if you can find them."

______Lumen sighed as he exited Time Tower Square. His only possible lead to the time-line he was born in was gone. Father Time not only told him that he couldn't return Lumen to his original Time-line, but that Lumen's Time-line was so improbable that he couldn't find it. It was like it didn't exist at all, which was a disturbing thought. Lumen was the only being from an entire universe that “existed”. His entire family had died long before Lumen had come to this Time-line, but all of his friends were alive when he had arrived. What became of them? Were they dead, or something worse? Did their souls exist anymore?

______Lumen slowly walked down the street, mulling over his past. Slung over his right shoulder like a backpack was the strap to his leather sheath, with sword inside. Of course to the average passerby it looked like Lumen was holding onto nothing because he had gotten his sheath enchanted with a temporary invisibility spell courtesy of Aldren, his “boss”. Lumen continued his path along the sidewalk until the voices in his head suddenly spoke up.

______Be watchful, there are weapons nearby,” spoke the dozens of voices in unison. Soon Lumen managed to get specifics from the voices. One weapon was an axe, hard to actually sense and so probably magical. The other was a gun, small and lightweight. Most likely a pistol of some kind. Lumen was walking straight towards them. With Lumen knowing where the weapons were, the voices scattered into their separate conversations. With a sigh Lumen muted them all.

______Lumen approached two men who looked like they had just taken a tumble, one looking like your average Joe and the other one who...didn't. “Joe” was roughly six foot and average weight, wore blue jeans with a black shirt and a large black trench coat, and had short brown hair and glasses. He was the one with the gun. The...other guy looked almost normal. Blue jeans, button up shirt covered over with a lab coat, and sunglasses. Sunglasses, in the Nightside where the sun doesn't shine, ever. But it wasn't just the sunglasses that made Lumen a bit wary. It was the grey skin that looked like no blood flowed underneath, the messy black hair with a bit of dirt caked into it, and finally the eyes behind the sunglasses. They were the silver-grey eyes of a blind man, but they could obviously see fine. Lumen suppressed a little shiver. This man was dead, probably a zombie of some sort.

______”You're dead.” Lumen spoke as he reached the pair. His sword was still in it's sheath, but Lumen was ready to draw it at any sign of trouble.

Joe squinted at the new comer. "He's not dead...he is just sickly, and needs a good meal." Joe felt around Jake's neck. "And has no pulse..." Joe reached into his coat and pulled out his spare pair of glasses and put them on. "...and...yeah...I think he is dead. Please don't eat my brain...there's not much up there worth eating."

Well this has been an interesting ten seconds, thought Jake as he proceeded to trip over someone, get yelled at, offered an apology then a meal, get told he was dead by a second stranger, then felt up by the first and asked not to eat their brains for doing so.

After standing back up and dusting himself off, Jake looked from Tripper to Mr. Statement and back again. Food comes first guessed Jake so he took a moment to collect his thoughts and look about his feet. He noticed the missing pair of glasses leaning up against the building next to them. Jake bent over to pick them up and winced inwardly as he noticed they had landed lenses down. After brushing them off and checking for scratches he turned to Joe.

"I will refrain from eating your brains in return for keeping your promise of food for finding the glasses," says Jake with a cocky smile to Joe while holding the glasses out on his open palm. "I'm thinking hamburgers."

Turning to make a witty retort of some sort to Lumen, Jake bit back the words forming on his tongue as he had to do a double take. Jake's eyes dilated as he looked over Lumen and some sort of muttering started at the back of his mind. A jumble of numbers, letters and symbols he had never seen before seemed to dance about Lumen for only a moment before fading away. This had all happened in mere seconds and Jake was the only one to have seen the ordeal. For some reason, Jake's eye's were pulled to the empty space above Lumen's shoulder where he was carrying...nothing apparently.

"Aye, dead would be the obvious conclusion but you would be mistaken. I am just mostly dead. There is a difference," states Jake as he turns from Lumen back to Joe. "As for no pulse, my body can't seem to make up its mind at times so the whole pulse thing comes and goes every now and them. My heart...well hearts...are beating just fine and I'd rather not be felt up by a random stranger again just so you can be sure."

Look from Joe to Lumen, Jake felt a bit of an awkward silence pass.

"Names Jake by the way. So how about getting back to those hamburgers? I just read about a burger joint that sells old fashion burgers and serve real coke-cola like they used to before the whole artificial sugar stuff."

______Lumen had to resist the urge to pull out his sword. The “almost-dead” man could see his weapon. Easy, me. He's just looking, no harm in that. Even if he is some sort of undead. Lumen shifted uncomfortably, but decided he might as well speak up.

______”Mostly dead? Interesting. Name's Lumen. Don't touch me or you might spontaneously combust, I have 'Holy Blood' and undead and demons tend to get hurt if they touch me.” Lumen stated, keeping his voice level to show he wasn't joking.

______Lumen sighed to himself. Meeting an almost-dead guy had reminded him of the fate of his Time-line. I suppose I should try and make new friends since I can't get back to my own. Lumen looked at Jake and “Joe” and decided they were probably as good as anything he was ever going to find in the Nightside. ”The place you are looking for is called 'Hawk's Wind Bar and Grill'. It doesn't just serve food from the 1960's, it apparently IS from the 1960's. From what I can gather, it burnt down, and then came back from the dead here in the Nightside because so many people missed it. Essentially it and all the people inside are ghosts, from the cooks to the waitresses on Roller-Blades. Not to make a crack at your situation Jake, but you would probably be able to fit right in, maybe even get a job if you need one.”

______Lumen turned to “Joe” for a moment and finished up his monologue,”I can lead you there, I've been here for months now and I might be able to get us in, as long as somebody else pays the tab.”

Joe took his glasses from Jake's hand and frowned at the scratches on the lenses. 'I guess this is my spare pair from now on' he thought to himself as he placed them into his coat pocket. Joe reached behind and withdrew his wallet. He checked it. "I guess I got the tab." Joe called Granny Grey and informed her be on the lookout for his pay check. 'vacation pay rules' he smiled to himself. "Oh, I guess I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Joe." He thought about the nature of his new friends..."slightly normal human." he continued. "...Oh, and sorry about the pulse thing Jake." Joe rubbed his neck as he appoligised. "Lead the way to the diner Mr. Lumen." Joe smiled at him trying to be as polite as possible. He thought about the diner a moment..."Wait...if its a ghost diner, with ghost staff...is the food a ghost too? I don't think I can get full of semi-existant food."

Jake pushed his sunglasses back into place and grinned a toothy lopsided grin at Joe and Lumen. Someone to pay the tab and someone 'friendly' to show them around. Guess my luck is looking up, thought Jake.

Ignoring the subtle movement by Lumen to grab his sword, though how he even noticed it or why he briefly knew Lumen's intentions worried Jake a bit, Jake held out his hand to Lumen.

"Act of good faith or stupidity on my part I'd be guessing but I would like to shake your hand, Lumen. I got picked up by aliens and had some of my squishy bits moved around and ended up like I am. Guess I never really died so I am pretty sure I'm not undead or demonic in nature. One way to find out quick, huh? Better to know now then later I think."

Once again Jake had the sense that he knew something he shouldn't actually know. Something in the back of his head, and it wasn't that weird voice or a stray memory, told him that shaking hands with Lumen would be alright. Plus part of him was just plain curious about what would happen. Worse case scenario, Jake spontaneously combusts all over the street and his new acquaintances. Best case scenario, Jake learns its safe to walk into churches without bursting into flames or something else that would probably feel really bad.

______Lumen grinned at "Joe" who turned out to be actually named Joe. Joe was right in thinking that the ghostly food wouldn't actually do anything for a normal human stomach, but really the entire reason to go to Hawk's Wind was to experience the 60's. Also the food could probably help out Jake, who seemed to run on strange mechanics put in him by aliens.

______"Alright then, I suppose it is decided. To Hawk's Wind. Oh and don't bother with 'Mr. Lumen'. Just Lumen will be fine." Lumen replied to Joe's comment.

______Lumen was about to head towards the main street when Jake put his hand out and offered to shake hands. Lumen was a little unsure. Shaking hands with Jake might indeed make him burst into flames, Lumen had had that happen to some poor zombie who tried to mug him once. Lumen adjusted the strap so that it was in its normal position so he could let go of it and then tentatively put his hand forward. As it neared Jake's nothing seemed to happen, and Lumen took that as a good sign and shook Jake's hand.

______No flames, no boils popping out on the skin and rupturing, and no screaming in agony. Everything seemed fine, but just as Lumen was about to let go he realized he could sense the axe he had from before. It was magical and it was also somehow a part of Jake, Lumen couldn't really understand was he was sensing. The closest he could come to explaining it was that it was a psychic axe.

______Lumen chose not to speak of it just yet as he spoke, "Well Jake, it seems you can walk into any church you feel like without bursting into flames. With that I think we should head to Hawk's Wind. I'm looking forward to it really, I'm told they sell old-fashioned Coke's there. The real kind from the 60's with heavy amounts of sugar and the special something that gave Coke its name."

______With that Lumen set off down the sidewalk towards the main street and eventually Hawk's Wind Bar and Grill.

[Thread Closed. I'll start the next part at Hawk's Wind]
